Sorry Ben, I was writing from the point of view that Bent will be gone by that point. A little presumptuous maybe, but I just reckon he'll be off.

The best thing about selling Roque to Spurs is the fact that we may be able to use the deal as leverage to bring in Bent. A proven goal scorer who is almost unbeatable in the air would be perfect for us.

On the subject of Rothen, has anyone checked out his stats?? Espn are saying he's played 19 games in 3 seasons, surely not.

Rothens stats

EDIT: espn stats are Crap!

Does anyone have his real ones?? soccerbase doesn't have anything either and I don't trust wiki.

It is wrong, he has played 34 games this season alone: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...26rlz%3D1I7DKUK

Very sceptical about Rothen especially at 31 years of age and an unproven South African both sound like definite squad fillers and nothing more.

The South African apparently is very pacy although unproven, and Rothen is a player with pedigree with an excellent range of passing who should be able to do a job for the next couple of seasons. Both sound like decent free transfers to me.

Unfortunately, the fact that the Rovers have no money to spend on expensive players means that Sam's hands are somewhat tied. These sound like decent additions to the squad considering our financial situation.

Benni McCarthy is out most natural goal scorer and should play every match, not a bit part like last season. Get him fit and he could be the difference between a poor season and finishing top half. More natural goal scorer than Roque in my opinion.

How do you suggest we do that? Answers on a post card to Sam Allardyce please.

i agree you never know this RW might set the place on fire.. or at least could be very good, if not nothing much lost... rothen did well at PSG last season scored goasl and got assists cant be that bad of a player.....

If that quoted 2,3M€ is correct, the Norwegian is on £40k/wk. Quite a lot for what he's been showing lately.. and has anyone ever agreed on dropping their salary without relegation?

Eh? He's crossed far more balls in the past few months than the rest of the team combined! ..... If you count long throw ins. :rover: His value to BRFC under SA should not be underestimated.

Don't underestimate the importance of being able to score penalties. Older fans like me can remember times when we were in the old first and second divisions and the whole of Ewood would groan when we were awarded a penalty - because we had such a poor record of scoring from them. It was miss after miss after miss. Benni can put them away and that's a real plus point.

He can but he never convincingly. He's missed more than he should to be regarded as a good spot kick player other than simply an adequate one. He either needs to put em into the side netting or hit em harder. I know there is such a thing as 'sending them the wrong way' which is purely between the taker and the Gk and cannot be spotted from the stands but all too often I am left thinking that if the GK had gone the right way he'd have saved it.

He should come to LJMU then!!!!

Couldn't agree more.

31, big wages and has dropped like a stone since joining PSG, has issues with the fans and has no-re-sale, not my cup of tea.

You need a good mix of youth and experience. What other player would you suggest we sign on a free that can do a job in the middle (sounds like he's going to be given the chance to start) and cover on the wing if needed?

Good points in that article. I was prob the best penalty taker in the world when we were 3 or more up with 5 mins to play and a far more fallible one when it was 1-1 in the last minute of a cup game. The top corner pen is very very difficult and the one most likely to miss the target.

So you don't think £40k/wk is a bit steep? Not that any of the PL wages are from this world, but there's no way Pedersen is currently producing to justify the highest salary of the club after RSC and Benni? Delap can throw too and I bet he's not even on half what the Norwegian is :)

Sounds like the typical player that recovered their careers and succeeded under Sam at Bolton to me. And resale is less relevant since we're getting him on a free.

Its very difficult for Sam to be quite honest. He has no money to spend, and has to make do with these experience freebies for a couple of seasons, in the hope that we get some investment in the future. Its now about getting a few experienced guys in, and maybe use what ever money he has on one or 2 quality players. If Rothen can do a job, and be at the club until he is 38 years old, and do a Tugayesque job then we will benefit. If he turns out like a Barry Fergusonesque signing, then we let him go.

My Norwergian isn't that fluent, so I'm just basing it on this translation/transcript:

TV "MGP can be the first Norweigan player to use the so called Webster-ruling"

MGP "If you want do use it, you can. No one can deny you the opportunity."

TV "If so, Morten must pay one years salary, about 20 million kroner (~2.3mill euros)"

I think Rothen sounds like an excellent aquisition. Not sure why people are worried about his age, his role in the team will bemuch more about experience than athleticism.

What does worry me is that Allardyceis getting frustrated about our transfer funds. We don't need combat between the big players up top at the club. And if Sam walked that would be terrible. I guess this will run and run!
