You need a good mix of youth and experience. What other player would you suggest we sign on a free that can do a job in the middle (sounds like he's going to be given the chance to start) and cover on the wing if needed?

I see your point he's played for France and with Monaco in the champions league, but I think we already have enough experience. Our squad even with departures is still rather old. For me its pointless at present, unless they are a player who can definitely improve what we have, RSC must be sorted first. Thats not going to be easy either, but it completely changes the picture. If he doesn't go then maybe as he's on a free, but he'll want a more than decent salary and at least two years. I honestly don't think given our finances that we should be investing money when we know we won't see a return. 30K a week over two years is 3.1M or Joe mattock and I know which I would rather have. (I know he's not a midfielder) Olsson could then be given the oppurtunity to become MGP's understudy. Treacy can then be moved on.

3 quality signings from our kitty and his sale would massively improve our chances next year, RB, CM, ST. the rest depends on who else leaves.

Suggesting signings is not easy first you need to know how Sam intends to play, if he does adopt a more 433 approach over the 442 you need different players. But if I was Sam and I wanted some experience and quality for my midfield it would be Juan Roman Riquelme (31), but you'd need two sitter's/strong centre mid's.

I think Rothen sounds like an excellent aquisition. Not sure why people are worried about his age, his role in the team will bemuch more about experience than athleticism.

What does worry me is that Allardyceis getting frustrated about our transfer funds. We don't need combat between the big players up top at the club. And if Sam walked that would be terrible. I guess this will run and run!

im sure if they gave him 5 he would want 10 and if they gave him 10 he would want 15 and so on and so on... im sure he will not walk he must of know

that he wasnt going to get 20 million to spend this summer...

I haven't seen Rothen for a while. I hope he's better than that little Spanish left winger ( can't remember his name) that Souey signed. He'd a nice left foot as well but played about a game and a half for us.

I never understand when this happens with our managers, they've all done it in recent history, Hughes, Ince, and now Sam.

i would say ther are probably 15 managers in PL who are not happy with the transfer funds they have ! ....i've read somewhere harry redknapp sayin he needs £30m! BFS will have one of the smallest transfer budgets in the league until RSC goes , but he knew that when he took the job and we as fans have known it too

Im hearing that if Roque goes this summer for £20 million (unlikely it will be lower if he goes around £16m-£18m) Sam will get £12 million back to spend.

Still think our best option is to do a exchange. Roque for Bent and Huddlestone maybe? At least that way, the money we get back wont be gobbled up by the bank...

wonder if one of the strikers is shevchenko? ...massive wages i know , but i dont think he has a future at chelsea and didnt exactly set the world on fire upon his return to milan , might fancy another crack in the PL ....would certainly "walk into our team" 30+ former world superstar ? typically sam some would say?

A couple of points and some questions to Nicko:

- Alan Smith rumours are rubbish? Please?

- Rothen was the midfielder which would "excite"? Hmm.

- I'm sure Nicko said the striker was "within the price range" so I think mystery man will be a permanent signing. Am I right, Nicko?

- Mystery man won't be Shevchenko as suggested earlier. The fact Coyle went for him within the last 4-5 years shows he will have been quiet or young. Shevchenko and the likes were neither.

I hope the Smith stuff is wrong...think it is.

Rothen appeals to me because he is a footballer...and he is making an effort to get a free to move rather than sit it out at PSG for another year.

Mystery striker still has to remain a mystery for now.

Nicko - Did all your Rovers-related stories make it into today's People?

And what do you make of Robbo's return to Spurs?

One Rovers line did not get in...may make Mirror tomorrow.

I don't see the Robbo and Spurs thing at all. Did it rear its head again today?

In other news, Hull have agreed a £6 million fee for Frazier Campbell. Would love to know where they are getting all this money from bearing in mind they splashed out on Bullard...

Yes Nicko, it said that Robbo has a house still near to Spurs training complex but it didn't say whether he'd want to go back, can't see this one happening though. I hate Harry Redknapp. :glare:

So he's not sold his house...

Must have been a slow news day...

I can't see Robbo going back to Spurs, he's experienced the truth that Spurs is a graveyard club (it ruins so many footballer's careers). Besides they have Gomes and Cudicini there.

On the Rothen story I guess if he comes in free then there’s not much to argue about, I would have liked us to spend some decent money on our midfield this season but as usual we have peanuts to spend. Just have to hope if he comes in that he does a decent job.

It might be controversial but i wouldn't give Pedersen a new deal, he hasn't done anything over the past few seasons to justify earning a new one. If he decides to buy out his contract in the future then it wouldn't bother me at all.

I think Pedersen improved greatly under Big Sam and with a full pre season under him I think he will improve again and this time he has competition with Brett back and Van Heerden in. I hope he gets a new contract and stays.

I think Pedersen gets a very hard deal off our fans sometimes. I accept that he's a very frustrating player, but I think that gets in the way of people seeing his true value to the team. Every week he still puts in some quality balls into the box, some pretty dreadful ones too, but it only takes one of the good ones to score a goal, and that's backed up with his being our top assister this year, despite being dropped for spells under Ince. He's also very solid in his tracking back and works well with Warnock. He's unlucky in that he's not the fastest and so can't flatter to deceive like players such as Lennon can, so if his delivery isn't on top form he looks like he's had a bad game, but I'd rather have Pedersen than Lennon every day of the week.

I don't really understand why you have got it in for Pedersen. He has done okay, much better since Sam came in, and he does his job well enough. He has not been any poorer than any of our other midfielders (which is not saying much, but still). And on top of that we simply don't have the money to throw him out for nothing and replace him.

I think he will have a good year next year under Sam's guidance.
