Ricky Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 He's not that old, people keep referring to him as an aging striker. He's only 29. I'd love it if we bought him in. He's had a bad spell with injuries at Newcastle, but doesn't EVERY player who goes to Newcastle have a bad run with injuries?? I'm sure he'll be back to his best and knocking them in for someone next season, just hope it's us. Shift Derbs on for 3-4m and use that to cover Owen's wages. Base his wages on incentives and its a win win. He scores more goals and we pay him more.

thenodrog Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Thats pretty much how i see it too. Past his best and only interested in his wage to help add more funds to his horse projects. Quite likely pay his gambling debts too. Am I correct in my recollection that he was once discovered chucking 40k away on one bet when he was still at Lpool? Avoid..
tcj_jones Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 If he had have remained fit these last three seasons or so, he'd probably still be playing in the top four in England or one of the bigger clubs abroad. If his wage demands were lower and he proved his fitness over six months, then he'd be an absolutely fantastic addition. Back to the days of feeding off a Heskey type, the days when he undoubtedly played his best football. As it is, desperate or not, there are other teams out there who would pay far more on his wages than us and who would take him despite his recent injury troubles.
G Somerset Rover Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 So it looks as if it's Chelsea who are close to the signing of Glen Johnson for £18 million. The same team who a couple of seasons ago sold him for £4 million. Fair enough he's matured as a player but it amazes me that only a couple of season's on that they're willing to pay £14 million more. If he signs they'll have Johnson, Bosingwa, Ferreira and Beletti who can all play right back. Now is surely the time to go for one of the latter two (unless Bosingwa wants to link-up with MGP who he described as the player he most looked forward to facing in the Prem ) . Both in my opinion would do more then a decent job and would allow Emo to play in midfield.
Backroom DE. Posted June 15, 2009 Backroom Posted June 15, 2009 It's just a sign of how crazy the market is right now. Johnson worth 18M? I don't think so.
tcj_jones Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 James Blasts Medical Management Interesting remarks here from David James here on medical 'mismanagement' in top level football. I agree, expert medical management is required at this level, but I was always under the impression that all top-level players were privy to this? I always remark how I'd be back playing in so many weeks if I were privy to the care that top footballers received, but apparently clubs don't always pay for the best. Personally, I do get the impression in football that too much emphasis is placed on getting a player back on the field as quickly as possible without the wider picture in mind and they, all too often, simply break down again upon return. A perfect example of this was David Dunn last season. He was predicted a January return, but appeared in early December (I think I have those dates right - either way he came back a good few weeks ahead of schedule) at exactly the point that it appeared that Ince's neck was on the line. He played a couple of games and got another long term injury. He wasn't ready.
modes98 Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Ferreira and Beletti who can all play right back. Now is surely the time to go for one of the latter two If it is any help Beletti always signs for us on Football Manager The whole Glen Johnson transfer is a joke. It was obvious he had talent and instead of keeping him and loaning him out they chopped him in to soon.
tcj_jones Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 The decision to replace and sell Johnson was Mourinho's. One of the few mistakes he made at the club. I find this very strange. Didn't Bosingwa have a good opening season in England? I wonder where he'll be off to now.
Lurid Coat Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Bosingwa had an excellent season, in my opinion. Johnson is perhaps a bit more versatile in that he can also play as a winger, but the Portugese is the better player in my book.
Hughesy Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Dont see the point of Chelsea signing Johnson. He would make a very good signing for Liverpool but I dont think they can afford him. Wonder if City will get involved?!
tcj_jones Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 If City were to go for Johnson, then I'd expect Liverpool to go in for Richards.
DeadlyDirk Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 If City were to go for Johnson, then I'd expect Liverpool to go in for Richards. Reports suggest Chelsea are aheard at the moment but Liverpool and City are interested, think due to money you can count out Liverpool but City might just blind him with £ signs, guess it depends if he holds a grudge against Chelsea, like someone else said as well, Bosingwa has looked good to me, Johnson might find himself backup again, loan to Pompey anyone?
philipl Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 loan to Pompey anyone? Well I'm 53 and a bit overweight so I guess I'd fit in well at Pompey now that you are asking....
Amo Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 I'd be VERY surprised if we signed Owen, and I've already highlighted why: Sam has first-hand experience with Owen's fitness problems, and implied the striker was finished. Sam also emphasized the importance of balanced players. The reason he let Derbyshire leave is because he's only a goalpoacher and brings little to the team-game. Owen is the perfect example. Quiet for 89mins, then pops up with a goal. But Sam wants more from his players, which is why he won't be looking at Michael.
DeadlyDirk Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Well I'm 53 and a bit overweight so I guess I'd fit in well at Pompey now that you are asking.... You'd probably get a 5 year contract at Newcastle
Blue blood Posted June 15, 2009 Posted June 15, 2009 Only if you asked for obscene money though. On the Owen thing, I think we've got Benni for the goal poaching slot in the squad, and weight problems aside, I think it's a case of better the devil you know, and Benni has a much better record over the past few seasons. If someone offered us silly money for Benni, Owen might be a good potential replacement, but he's not what we need right now.
philipl Posted June 15, 2009 Author Posted June 15, 2009 You'd probably get a 5 year contract at Newcastle Only if they paid me £650k to manage my image rights though. I am not selling myself cheap.
tcj_jones Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 £7m for Bentley? If so, then Villa have just done one of the deals of the summer, and the summer has barely even begun!
Hughesy Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Yes but the deal is part of a deal that will see Jenas also join Villa - but Young go the other way. Sounds like trash to me.
Ricky Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Can't be right as Philip says that player exchanges don't exist anymore. ;o)
modes98 Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 That valuation doesn't sound to far out. Young= £25m Jenas = £8m Bentley= £15m
Hughesy Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Liverpool have agreed a £17m fee for Johnson according to BBC NEWS/ Liverpool Echo & Pompey News
philipl Posted June 16, 2009 Author Posted June 16, 2009 Liverpool have agreed a £17m fee for Johnson according to BBC NEWS/ Liverpool Echo & Pompey News More significantly, Real have given up on Alonso.
Hughesy Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 And they also admitted they may struggle to sign Villa. Why!?
