I think Rooney is wasted on his own up front when playing for England. I'd prefer him alongside Crouch, at least in the group games.

I'm not sure what I'd do with the midfield if both Beckham and Lennon are out. Maybe Gerrard and Young on the wings with two out of Lampard, Barry and Carrick in the middle?

I just don't think that Johnson is ready to play in a World Cup. Hopefully Capello will see sense and play Ashley Young, who deserves the RM spot over everybody else right now.

Young has been crap this year, one trick pony (show the outside, cut back inside and whip it in with his right). Johnson has a touch of class about him. I'd definitely take him.

I don't agree with that. He's been consistently good this season, and was absolutely fantastic last. He is considerably better than both SWP and Walcott, neitehr of whom are immediate starters for their clubs. Also, he cuts in primarily because he is right footed playing on the left wing and because he is under instructions to get early balls into the box. Regardless, it clearly works.

Johnson has very little Premier League experience. I like the look of him a lot, and he did score a cracker today, but when he started the other week he was subbed after a pretty poor performance - he looked out of his depth. There is no way he is ready to start for England on the world's biggest stage. Maybe the 2012 Euros, but not now.

Good for England that Beckham is out. Its a terrible thing to happen to him but he shouldnt have been on the plane anyway. Beckham added nothing to the squad and would have only prevented a younger, brighter prospect from getting into the team. Set piece delivery is not enough to warrant a place. Its sad in many ways, esp for him personally but for the national team its a blessing in disguise

Eh?

Beckham is still England's most creative force and he has saved English blushes for the last ten years time and time again. He is also far and above the best leader and England are a much better team when he is on the field through his grit and determination and a touch of class thrown in.

England are much weaker without Beckham on the plane.

13th. With each place worth almost £800k a time, 10th would be a very good season!

As for England - Milner on the right, Young on the left, 4-5-1 with Rooney on his own upfront.

To be fair Hughesy you have absolutely no evidence to say that we budgetted for 13th. John Williams has never come out and said the position we have budgetted for and 13th is pur speculation.

I must have dreamt it to then, pretty sure there was a press statement about the place/budget, maybe in the LT.

The press statement said something along the lines of there being a position that has been budgetted for that is 'rumoured' to be 13th.

JW has never actually stated what that position was. I'm happy to be corrected if someone has a link to it.

Phil Brown on his way...

Not great timing as I would have thought it looks like a reaction to a defeat by Arsenal. I think he did well to last as long as he did after his antics at City. If he was chocolate he'd eat himself.

Brian Horton until the end of the season?

The Everton defeat did him in...they were chatting up other bosses last week...he only got to take the Arsenal game because no-one wanted it at the time.

Horton in charge for now. But they will try for a 'name.'

Beckham has torn his achiles tendon.

Anyone would think the world has stopped spinning, judging by the media reaction.

Becks has seen better days and has been a passenger for the national side of late.

They said that before, then we failed to reach Euro 08.

Beckham is always a useful member of the team and with Lennon looking like he won't make it as well it would have been nice to have the option.

I think we have enough on the right if Capello trusts a younger player. The main worries for me are right back and left back and of course in goal.

If every England player that goes to SA had the same passion, desire and strength of character as David Beckham then you'd walk it, and deservedly so. The squad has always had the talent, just never enough drive. Becks has that by the shed load.

He's a huge miss, gutted for him.

I heard the other day about Bullard and Barmby having a fight in public or something? Don't suppose you can tell me a bit more about that one, Nicko?

Brown needed to be sacked 10 games ago. Now's too late to be making changes. They're down.

Exactly, well said! And you just know it means so much more to him than anyone else. This is his last shot at a major competition as well. I wouldn't be surprised if he's now played his last game for England.

I'm also shocked that people would sooner have SWP and Walcott over him in the biggest competition in world football, because they appear to be the alternatives.

David Beckham missing in SA is a huge blow to the english national team. He may not have the same skills as earlier, but he has a great delivery of the ball and a freekick specialist and the team will miss his strong character and charisma both on and off field.
