English players are technically inferior to those on the continent. That's why nobody signs them. All this talk about the Premier League being the greatest in the world is only because it has all the dough. Name one English player who's come close to repeating his success on the continent?

This statement is absolute rubbish to be honest. Yes England have been terrible this tournament but at club level many of these players are excellent. They might well have foreign players around them who are excellent too but it doesn't change the fact that Lampard, Gerrard (along with Torres) and Rooney are the stand out players of three of the best teams in European football over the last few years.

There haven't been many English players excelling on the continent as hardly any have left as they're so comfortable in the Premier League. However the success rate of ones that have made the trip relatively recently has been quite good; Woodgate struggled on fitness more than ability at Real, Owen and Beckham were relative successes, McManaman was an outright success and even lower down the likes of Colin Kazim Richards (plays for Turkey but essentially an English footballer) have done well overseas.

Only three of Spain's side play outside of Spain and those three all play in England. None of Germanys squad play outside of Germany.

For me England's spine is a good on paper but where we struggle even on paper is out wide. When England have been good, we've always had wide players capable of producing the goods. In Euro '96 McManaman and Anderton played blinders even though they both never hit those heights afterwards. We had Beckham for years who could swing a great cross in. Right now we have no one and it's no coincidence that we're so bad. England don't traditionally produce playmakers in the centre of the park and so wide players have been really important to us over the years. Right now we have the likes of Lennon and SWP on the wings, or an out of position Gerrard. This puts more pressure on us to play through the middle which results in those god awful "Hollywood" balls where one of our midfielders (often Gerrard) tries to find the killer ball through to Rooney which never ends up coming off.

There's various other factors too but for me Ashley Young is an absolute must for the immediate future and is the biggest omission from the squad. He'll be 26 for the next Euros and 28 for the next World Cup and is one of our few wide players who has pace and an end product to boot. Adam Johnson should be given a go though I can see why Capello felt it was a bit too early for him this time.

I agree totally but the reality is this Rooney is the only player who can excell in the future. The others are tried and tested FAILURES on the ultimate stage.

Got to agree with this, think Rooney would definitely benefit from a move abroad right now as you fear the abuse hes going to get from around the grounds come next season.

Veron has been poor in the WC.

What? The guy has completed over 76% of his average of 80 passes a game, that sits him not as good as Schweinsteiger or Gilberto Silva but just a touch behind Xavi.

I have watched all of Argentina's games and the three he has played in he has been crucial in being available man in covering the back four in defence, distribution and lead up play. At 35 and playing in excellent form.

I am a huge Argentina fan and have watched all the games myself. I have not been very impressed with Veron. I agree with you that he has played a vital part in being an available player to come on in the last minutes to protect a lead. However I think he have lost the ball, mispasses and few too many times.

I am sure he has started in each of those three games and was only left out of South Korea with injury. Maradona has already said when he is fit he is an automatic starter.

I think you are being harsh for a guy who is 35 past his best but is absolutely critical to the coach's plans for success, I think it speaks volumes for his ability.

If he has lost the ball or posession it is because he is passe the ball on every defensive and offensive move.

I think you are bigging him up.

He only started against Nigeria and Greece.
