doctorryan Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 The potential returns from Rovers are far, far less though. Even with huge amounts of investment there's little to no chance we'd achieve Champions League football - and that's where the money is. I don't think you understand the Steinbrenners at all. If by some grace of God Hal & Hank Steinbrenner were to decide to purchase Rovers, the European Cup Final is exactly where we'd be headed. Unfortunately, I don't see any amount of praying, that we could do, that would get that to happen. But a nice thought. Just please don't let them buy Spurs, or any other club in the FAPL (besides Rovers) for that matter.

Hughesy Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 anyone read what Robbie Van Persie said about us? http://www.skysports.com/football/world-cup-2010/story/0,27032,12098_6268522,00.html He needs to consider what he said about us & then consider his early quotes "It was not as pretty as it used to be with Holland. But my question is: Getting results and reaching the final or playing the beautiful game and getting knocked out in the first round - which would you choose?" Thats right Van Percy - Your team played gay little triangles and got un-done at ewood as we had done our homework and played on your weaknesses as a team....what is it now, 5 years without a trophy?
thenodrog Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Ffan might be interested in this... Hughesy Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Martin Jol is a good choice - he should do well at Fulham. As for Blackpool - Rob Hulse & Francis Jeffers?? Talk about wasting money!
Fife Rover Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Barry Ferguson has retired from international football. Just thought our Scottish members would like to mourn the loss to their national team . He was sacked from the Scotland team over a year ago and told he would never play for Scotland again after his gross disrespect shown publcly at Hampden. Few (if any) have missed him or mourned his passing. Most people I spoke to at the time were outraged at his conduct and said "good riddance" or words to that effect.

I think the funny face in Billy's post was designed to show the huge lump of sarcasm with which it was written!
Billy Castell Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I was being a bit sarcastic. I probably used the wrong face. Anyway, Martin Jol would do a good job at Fulham.
Amo Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Btw, has anyone else seen Man. City's new 'Elite Squad'? It's the new name for their reserve side. How exactly does the second string qualify as 'elite' or am I missing something here?
doctorryan Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 The same way the First Division now qualifies as The Championship.

I thought I'd seen that the former Dundee United manager had given him a chance to play for the country again.
Hughesy Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Joe cole signed for Liverpool on a 4 year deal. Good signing for them if he stays fit...
Majiball Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Will he play wide or in the hole?? Gerrards best position is behind the striker, so I wonder whether Cole is his replacement.
67splitscreen Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Affecting the home grown rule for both clubs, Chelsea last time I checked were one short with Cole listed. No big deal for them, they'll just buy someone to sit on the bench.

No more than 17 non-home growns and no more than 25 over 21 yr players are the limits. Edit: so they can have 0 home growns, 17 non-home growns and dozen under 21 yrs to fill the bench.

Or, "Under the rules, clubs will have to name a squad of 25 players over 21 before the season begins. Eight of those players must be "home-grown", in that they must have been developed for at least three years by an English or Welsh club before their 21st birthday. They can name a second, limitless list of players under 21 and both lists can be resubmitted at the end of the January transfer window."
LeChuck Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Will he play wide or in the hole?? Gerrards best position is behind the striker, so I wonder whether Cole is his replacement. It does make you wonder whether Gerrard will be going, Cole said a week ago he wants a central role. I wonder if they'll keep Gerrard in the more withdrawn role he played toward the end of last season? He did a really good job in Alonso's old position. Massive signing for Hodgson anyway, it could really get the Liverpool fans on his side.
67splitscreen Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I think you are right there LC, Gerrard reverting to Alonso's role, much cheaper option to boot.

Clubs do not have to name a full squad of 25 if they do not have that many contracted players and in this instance they may add free agents outside the transfer window. However if they have 25 eligible contracted players, they must be named.Similarly, clubs do not have to name eight home grown players if they do not have that many but that would mean operating with a reduced squad. http://www.premierleague.com/page/Headlines/0,,12306~2094341,00.html
philipl Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 Jol moving from Ajax to Fulham pretty well confirms that Ajax are in deep trouble financially. Suarez, Stekelenberg (or whatever- the GK) and vand der Wahl (RB) are all up for sale. Spurs are closing in on Bellamy's signature. Hodgson is busy moving out the Rafa rubbish like Lucas, Insoua etc but it does appear that Torres' injury is not sufficiently bad to prevent his move to Chelsea. Looking more likely (but not certain) that Fabregas will stay at Arsenal but is a certainty for Barca next summer if Arsenal don't win anything this season.
67splitscreen Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 http://www.premierle...2094341,00.html Which ever way you look at it by the deadline, you name the squad within the ruling. Noone is going to name their squad until business is conclude, would have thought that obvious.

Noone is going to name their squad until business is conclude, would have thought that obvious. Yes. The point I was trying to make was that Chelsea doesn't have to buy anyone to sit on the bench because of the new rules. They can register just 6 (or how many did they now have) home growns, just as long as there's 25 or less over 21 yrs and 17 or less non-home growns.
Commondore Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 anyone read what Robbie Van Persie said about us? http://www.skysports.com/football/world-cup-2010/story/0,27032,12098_6268522,00.html Too bad we were the better side and completely deserved our win at the end of last season. Arsenal didn't dominate anything. When we have indeed been the weaker side vs Arsenal, we haven't gotten away with sneaky wins or draws, we usually get our worst hammerings of the season. So not sure what RVP is talking about at all really. I think Wenger hates us so much that it is rubbing off on his squad. It's a Dutch thing, you won't find any country more obsessed with playing football "the right way". Something that probably has helped a lot with their outstanding production of star players for a nation with 16 million inhabitants. But I digress...
