cletus Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Just bought 4 tickets to see Muse in Dublin on Friday 6th November 09. Never been to Ireland/Dublin before & wandered if anybody can recommend a decent, lively, friendly & cheapish place to stay whilst over there? We`ll probably be going for the weekend. Many thanks (trust my luck.....we`ll be playing the dingles that weekend!!)

Ozz Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 The Townhouse Dublin, about mintues north of The Liffey. As recommended by Kiwiwanabee several years ago, ironically!
Rover95 Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 We stayed at Jury's Inn in the centre of Dublin for New Year a couple of years ago. Was reasonable and very clean and nice.
American Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 The Trinity Capital is where I just spent this week. Right across from the college and about a 5 minute walk to Temple Bar.
Ste B Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 We stayed at Jury's Inn in the centre of Dublin for New Year a couple of years ago. Was reasonable and very clean and nice. Nowt wrong with that place. Stayed here for the first Bray game. Depending on the group with you, we got a decent hostel in Oliver Ogogartys or something similar for much less money a year later.. but was 6 to a bog and shower.
Mc Love Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 If you want to lap it up in luxury you could try the Berkeley Court in posh D4, i think its only 109 pr for that night you are going, pretty sweet if you ask me!
Hughesy Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Dublin?? Take plenty of spend with you, it isnt the cheapest place on earth!!
Mc Love Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Yep...what hughesy said! Although was in a pub near Croker and it was pretty reasonable
stuwilky Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 The Jury's on the river is fine, we've stayed in Cassidy's a few times and that is ok. I think someone (Hannah?) stayed in the Best WEstern just off O Connell as well. We've also stayed in the Gresham, supposedly one of Dublin's finest hotels. Not recommended. Oh and have breakfast at Eddie Rockets just next to the OConnell Street bridge. Its amazing (as recommended to me by Grooby!)
Mc Love Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Empty Pockets for breakfast? You'd be better off finding a pub somewhere that does breakfast
cletus Posted November 4, 2009 Author Posted November 4, 2009 Off to sunny Dublin in the morning How much can we expect to pay to get from airport to city center?.....& how long does it take? Are there trains & buses or is a joe-baxi the best option? (there`s 4 of us going)

Are there trains & buses or is a joe-baxi the best option? (there`s 4 of us going) Depending where you are staying the 747 goes from right outside the terminal building to OConnell Street for 10Euro return, taxi is roughly 40Euro each way. Beer is expensive, recommend the Porterhouse at the far end of temple bar though, went there three weeks ago! How long you going for? We're back again on Monday night for a few days. Some places expect to pay upwards of 5euro a pint.
Rovermatt Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 I have to warn you, Dublin is very expensive. Shockingly so.
brian_gallagher85 Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 I use this lot all the time to get from Liverpool to Manchester and I find them quite good - Terravision - only €7 too! And yes Dublin is a complete joke for prices, especially with you lot getting next to nothing for your pound now too. The cheapest "boozer" in Dublin is probably the Ryanair plane you've just flown in on
Mc Love Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 The city centre is quite far from the airport. There should be a bus service, think its called air link, or else you can use Aircoach http://www.aircoach.ie/aircoach.fares.php

The words decent, cheapish and Dublin don't go together. Somewhere like the Holiday Inn or Jury's in the centre of Dublin may work and there are plenty of B&B's about that could also do the job. As Rovermatt said, Dublin is obscenely expensive. I think that after Moscow, it's the most expensive city in Europe.
American Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 You can usually get a halfway decent deal at Trinity Capital (around 70E) located right next to Trinity College and a short walk to Temple Bar and a bunch other. Oh, and Stu, my meeting was pushed back a week, so will be there the week of the 16th now, not when you are there. Edit: Also, if you stay at Trinity Capital, don't drink at the bar (unless your boss is picking up the tab), the prices are criminal!

My mate stayed in the Trinity Capital you mentioned and thanks you for it btw

Yep, that's where I always used to stop, and it is only 5 mins walk from the bus station which runs the fast bus to and from the airport.

We`re going Thursday morning, seeing Muse at the O2 on Friday night & coming back Saturday evening. Hopefully we`ll get out of Dublin without spending up our 300euro budget
cletus Posted November 8, 2009 Author Posted November 8, 2009 Unfortunately they didn`t sell "I GOT RIPPED OFF IN DUBLIN" t-shirts....which is a shame, cos they`d sell thousands!!! Got back from Dublin last night & tbh none of us were impressed with the place. Many thanks for all the advice from everybody on here. The prices were nothing short of extortionate to say the least!! I paid 6.10 euros for a pint of lager in one pub (we didn`t stay long) & a round of four drinks (3 pints lager & 1 small glass of wine) came to an astonishing 23.60 euros in another boozer! We stayed at the Ripley Court hotel in Talbot St. It was a decent place & the staff were good. The Temple Bar was an expensive plastic version of what tourists 'think' Dublin pubs should be like. We went in two non-tourist pubs & found them rather unwelcoming. Upon leaving one of them my mate heard somebody say "eff off you English c####"....which was nice. Pity they didn`t say that before we spent 20-odd euros on drinks. Generally after visiting a new place, we give it the 'litmus test' The litmus test being the questions.... 1...Did you enjoy? 2...would you go again? 3...would you recommend it to your friends & family? I`m sorry to say Dublin failed on all 3 of our litmus test questions The only good points of the trip were Muse being absolutely fantastic (as usual) & the 1st pub we went in (hard rock cafe). The lad behind the bar asked where we came from. We said Blackburn & he shouted the other bar lad over, he is a Rovers season ticket holder!

Mc Love Posted November 13, 2009 Posted November 13, 2009 Cletus, I am sorry you didnt have a good experience in Ireland, dublin is a kip anyway! Anyone from outside of the pale, dont really like living there anyway and the ones that say they do are only lying!! Come to Limerick or Cork when Munster are playing in Thomond or Musgrave Park, and you will have a much better time and not get ripped off.
