If you only choose to look at some of the players we have been linked to then you will get yourself depressed.

The media have been linking us with far better players, as has nicko. I get the feeling that we will sign a young striker for decent money and then get an oldie in to try and buy a short term high return of goals.

We all thought we'd get in a Bentley replacement last season too. It's very unlikely that we'll get a top striker for anything less than £8-£10 million and I can't see our board being prepared to pay such a sum. You get the impression that our budget gets smaller by the day.

Its laughable really.

We sell a striker for £18 milion and the best we have been linked to is an 32 year old former Rovers reject Kevin Davies, 35 year old overweight condom designer Christian Vieri, 33 year old with some serious questions over his knee RVN and a freebie thats not good enough for Celtic (playing in a joke of a league and still can't get a game) Jan Vennegoor of Hesslink.

We haven't signed any of them, but the targets if true are embarassing.

:lol: We have also been linked with Janko, Crouch, Garcia, the kid at Real Madrid to name a few.

In reality however we have signed a a young keeper, a solid french defender, a decent specialist right back, a young french midfielder, a freebie winger and have set up a loan for a young striker.

Try to keep hold of the rope just for now - the media always links us with older/ poorer players anyway.

I'm not sure I agree on the second point, because it would prove something of a conflict of interest. A manager might seek to move players on in order to pocket some cash, but to the detriment of the team.

On the first point, however, I am in absolute agreement.

Go ask Mike Newell!!!

Didn't he have something along those lines at Luton?

He's got a long name

He's got a long name

Vennegoor of Hasseleink.

He's got a long name!

As soon as I read the story of him leaving Celtic I thought Sam would be interested. I'd much rather he came in as backup to the big signing than Vieri. His goalscoring record suggests he's worht a punt on a free, especially as he's still only 30.

The biggie is out. I thought the football-related issues here were even bigger...like where does it leave the play-offs etc. But that's just me. Imagine if they had been promoted? Ouch.

'Storm in a teacup' springs to mind. It could have been a pretty ironic reverse of circumstances if Sheff Utd had gone up given the West Ham saga a few years back. The point is though they didn't, so Kenny's positive test is nothing more than a blip really, it doesn't really affect anything outside of his own career. Preston might be able to get a few quid out of them for losing the semi finals, but that's it. An even bigger anti-climax than Mr. X!

And people are ok with selling our best central defender in Chris Samba and one of the top left backs in the country in Steven Warnock... Wonder which various 30 year olds and rejects would be linked as their replacements.

We haven't signed any of them, but the targets if true are embarassing. Something not right behind the scenes whether thats Sam's decision making on targets, the scouting network, the board perhaps pocketed more money than is led to believe from the Roque transfer or the fact that the wage budget has been cut and can't be added to anymore. Something just isn't right if this is the best we can do...

Ive been thinking and wondering this for a while, we sell our best players and don't have replacements lined up or at least an idea of a player who we want and have a good chance of getting them. the club and Sam new rocky wanted to leave in January and the same with Bentley as well.

Its starting to become a bit of a bad joke now.

We don't seem to be backing our managers no wonder Sam did not want to sell rocky in January. Something has to change we can not carry on like this every transfer window and not investing in the playing squad, Keep selling our best players and not replacing them with at least someone of the same or the potential ability will only end up going one way.

Sam can not perform miracles the club will have to help him out and pay the going rate for players.

MESSAGE TO JW IF WE WANT QUALITY WE HAVE TO PAY THE GOING RATE FOR THE PLAYERS SIMPLES REALY.

STRIKER - I think Rovers have missed out or been priced out of everyone they have asked for...think I said before this is a tough market.

DI SANTO - it's a waiting game, but there's not much you can do.

How uplifting. <_<

Edit: If what Nicko says about Rovers doing "a lot of homework" (locating and enquiring about potential striker targets) the past couple of weeks is true, then it's pretty unprofessional on the club's part. Surely Roque's departure didn't come as a huge shock or surprise? I wish we could have lined up a couple of realistic replacements BEFORE we sold him.

Right guys, rather than listen to all the papers and worry, lets consider some facts.

We know that Sam has in the regiion of £13m to spend. So he has backing. We don't want to do a Leeds, so we have to be financially secure, so we can't spend all £21m raised. This is simple fact. We had a poor season last season, and it has cost us money.

It's only just turned July, there is plenty of time for us to sign players. We have already got 4 players in. They may not be huge, but Givet is a demon, Jacobsen provides a solid full back, and we have a promising youngster and a gamble(a free one at that). We have barely spent any money.

We as a club are never that public with our dealings. I think it's shocking to suggest that Sam doesn't have any suggestions as to who he wants in. Do you really think he is so unproffessional?

JW has done an amazing job just keeping us in the league, and for people to get knickers in a twist because the paprs link us with ex-players and has beens (because of Sams rep) is nothing short of rediculous.

Lets calm down just now. If we are in this same situation in a months time, then by all means we should all be concerned, but it's only the beginning of July...

Priced out ....... Hmmmmm?

How on earth can we sell a striker for £18m and be priced out of any kind of decent replacement?

Yet still people think these players are easily replaced and continue to suggest that we should, for instance, sell Samba for £15m because he's "not worth that much". Who's to say how much a player is worth? Maybe we should look again at these get out clauses. I don't remember one of them working in our favour. At least if there's no get out clause we can line up a replacement before we let our best players go.

Precisely, which is kind of the point I was trying to make (and what Luric Coat has said). Everybody from the tea lady to JW knew that Roque would leave us this summer if not sooner. Why was no direct replacement lined up months ago?..certainly since our premier league status was secured?

Spot on.

It was obvious (the day that Sam joined or after?) when Roque did that interview on Five Live that he was going it was just a matter of when. As soon as that happened we should have been scouring the world for a replacement striker and had plenty of options for when the time had come.

I hope he is wrong. He's a big name but no in the sense we all wanted. His goal scoring record isn't fantastic considering he is in a poor league.

Best summed up by this line from his wiki:

"He was released by Celtic in July 2009 and it is believed he is now being persued by Championship Club Bristol City"

Take No notice off the bristol City Rumour. That Was A Red Herrring

Someone in the pub Was talking about van hesselink last night and he reckons he's had to cut his holiday short to talk to us.

He'd be ok here Sam would get him fit

Van hesselink has not even done well in the SPL, never mind the PL, no thanks, very average player, we should be looking at better players then him. I even prefer Davies then him!!!!!

You'd prefer Davies? But Davies would be our main signing, Hesselink would be backup to the main signing. It's totally different. If anything he's an alternative to Vieri.

I have to admit I'd be very happy with him coming on a free. With Sam looking at players like Vieri and Hesselink you have to wonder where the Di Santo deal is going though, unless Benni and/or Roberts is being lined up to leave.

Point one...where is the main signing?...it's proving rather elusive.

Point two...van Hesselink is very very ordinary...if you even thought about him you would need locking up.

Point three...Di Santo should be done...he is now very much a priority which is why I said in the first place that it is some business considering the marrket.
