Players who specialise in playing as a target are usually of above-average height with good heading ability and an accurate shot. They tend to be the "outlet" player for both midfielders and defenders, able to hold the ball up and allow other players time to enter the game. They tend to score goals from crosses, often with the head, and can use their body strength to shield the ball while turning to score.

And that is not Samba?

He doesn't score goals.

Find a definition of a centre back and that will suit Samba much better. It's bordering on insanity to willingly want Samba as the first choice striker next season. Even Sam only did it as last resort and he loves playing with a big target man.

Nicko: Is there any players coming to Ewood? I mean now when we sold both Roque and Matt the fans expect to celebrate a new signing....

I think we know most of the names they want - but there is a big difference between wanting and getting. It will speed up once the manager comes back off his break.

He can still go up for corners and even throw ins when playing centre back. He doesn't provide anywhere near enough of a goal threat in open play to justify being picked as first choice striker. He'll do in an emergency situation but we really need to be aiming for better.

Nicko,

have you heard anything more about Shikabala or any other of the Egyptians?

I would think that it would kick-start some dealings when they lost against USA and didnt advance in confed cup.

Really don't agree.

I see Samba as more of a threat than Jason Roberts, though you didnt say he should be picked first choice striker ;)

I think tha plan is good, considering how hard it is to find a good and valuable target man.

Kevin Davies £5m or Samba? Samba

Crouch £11m or Samba? Samba

Nicko: Did we try to arrange an exchange with City when we sold Roque? I mean if we were interested in Caceido, Onouha or Jo?

No. You never know, you might go back for one of them. But right now they are NOT on the list.

We've got £13m to spend, big money off the wage bill and more than six weeks to find a centre forward before the sart of the season and people are advocating we use Samba as first choice?!

I can't help but feel the story about Crouch being number one target and Beattie being another is just a re-hash of January stories. Why on earth would be in for Beattie after his big money move and scoring goals in the Premier League for a Stoke side that just finished above us...

Would love Crouch, mind.

Then you have to pay money to replace an excellent centre back, not many of those knocking around either. Oddly by playing Samba centre back I believe we give ourselves more attacking options - we still get to send him up for throw-ins and corners but we also have a proper target-man striker on the pitch. Play Samba up front and someone else in defence and we are far less dangerous in my opinion.

Did Samba score once from open play last season? I can't remember him doing so.

How about re-signing Nils-Eric Johansson and play him as a left midfielder, or maybe Gresko as a central midfielder?

have we not saved a packet on wages already or do we pay the players who have left until the end of June??

even six players at an average of £30,000 per week (allowing for Roques wages) in one month equates to aound £700,000

Also, wonder why, if we are in for a right full back Steve Finnan has not been mentioned or has his game gone, dont hear a great deal about him!!

I would like us to consider Pedro Mendes though, great ball retention and good vision, also scored a few for Pompy!!

Mendes was good a couple of seasons ago not any more getting old and would struggle in the prem now i think

Yup, 30 years old. Joining after a successful stint at Rangers. Recipe for disaster. :tu:

Why is Sturridge going to Chelsea??? (Or should I be saying "What have the Romans ever done for us")

Apart from Money I think the guys mad, Dan, your going from a club that won't play you to a club that def. won't play you, so therefore, you'll get less games than the few you got a the council house stadium?

I rate him but City want £10m for "Development fee!!" Absolutely no chance, what do you reckon 2 or 3?

Be nice if we nicked him, but if the rent boys are in for him we're knackered.

Nicko, is there any Rovers interest in Benjani? Can't see him getting much of a run over at Citeh this season, when their shiny new forward line is in place.

Reasonably limited player in some ways, but someone who can lead the line and (when on song) put the ball in the back of the net. I would rather see him turning out for Rovers than Davies.

They reckon £5 million with performance add-ons in the end.

I can only assume City are going after him for the same reasons Liverpool have signed Johnson - to boost their English quota for the new Champions League rules.

I was amazed Pompy let him go when he did, he was scoring for fun, can only think something about his character was a problem! But would that kind of player fit into Sams plans?

There's good reason we don't hear to much about finnan.
