Sad to see Matty go. He was the best natural finisher at the club in my opinion scored some real goal poachers goals which no other striker at the club would have converted. Think the FA Cup game against Blyth and the infamous last minute against Citeh cost him is place at the club. He's one of thoose strikers you might not see involved with the game much but could pop up with vital goals.

I'm sure Big Sam has got a suitable replacement set up though.

Have i missed something, Derbs was average at best. Stop kidding yourselves, so what if he is a local lad, would you be happy for 11 Locals in the team and we got relegated, He's another Gallagher can't you see this, we could keep him for another year he wouldn't progress then we'd struggle to a million for him, Goodbye goodluck and all the best, Why don't we start trusting Big sam for 5 mins, Sam MUST have replacements lined up, his job would depend on it

Problem is Benni blows hot and cold and clearly at times last season wasn't fully fit.

All players do and you can't help that. Yet, considering he was overweight and out of the team for large periods, he was still our top scorer. If he plays every week then he stays in shape, he has no opportunity to put on weight.

problem with benni is he aint intrested, lardarse prefered a centre half up front rather than him

Benni is a lazy player, but that can also be labelled smart. He conserves energy and uses it when needed, much like Andy Cole. Workrate wise he is a nightmare, but I would much rather he was on the defenders shoulder than running 80 yards to defend on the edge of box and leave us with nothing up front. Samba was only employed in that role due to injuries and did rather well, but you wouldn't know that :tu:

sam left him out for a reason

at times last season he didn't look interested and was anonymous. other times he proved to be the difference in the game

i still like him, hoping for better next season. he will start if he deserves to, sam will be the judge of that

Its unprofessional, there are plenty of players in teams across the world that aren't playing week in week out and yet they can still keep their fitness levels up and don't pile on the pounds.

Benni is a talented player no doubt however his unprofessional behaviour annoys me.

That's the truth isn't it Alan.

If we had paid 3 or 4 million for Matty, people would have been very disappointed. It's only the fact that he's a local lad that keeps the attention on him. A proper manager would analyse this as - "Do I keep a player who's never become a regular in my team, or do I try and bring in someone who very well might"? There's only one realistic choice.

Good luck Matty, you will be well remembered here.

Yep, excellent post.

A lot of people are bringing up his goal vs Newcastle saying roberts wouldnt have scored it, well as bad as he can be at 1 on 1's i think there's a stronger chance he would have scored that than of Derbs scoring some of the goals Roberts has this season, there is no way he would have had the strength to score the goal vs Fulham which is possibly the biggest goal of our season.

For me Roberts offers the team a lot more than Matty ever could.

As for him being the best natural finisher at the club he's nowhere near Benni's finishing ability. Lazy as he can be that guy doesn't miss many chances.

I still believe the fact that he is a local lad is clouding a lot of people judgements on this, for example Nonda seemed to take a lot of flak but had a better goalscoring rate for us than Derbyshire did.

As I said though I felt Matt was a decent squad player and an option from the bench at the end of games, he wanted more than that and so do we as a club. We get a wad of money to find someone potentially better hopefully*, he takes a step down in terms of weekly football but a step up in terms of lifestyle and glamour ties, he will come back to England in the future better for it.

* This is the real decider on whether or not its a good move, we need to make sure we bring in someone at least equal to his ability.

Dunno why Kenwright was there. I just guess he was there to visit Johnny Williams, who's a good pal of his. But even so, player discussions can arise after initial small-talk. I hear he may be after warnock. But afte realising how much they paid for Fellaini, may we have another Satnav Cruise candidate?

The arguements over Roberts and Derbyshire are stupid. Roberts is by FAR the better player of the two!

Thanks for that impeccable insight. Perhaps you should provide reasons WHY before you demean other people's opinions.

All the best wishes for Derbs, he gave it his all while he was at the club but I think this transaction has benefitted all parties, Rovers get the money they want, Olympiakos get a goal pinching striker who the fans love, and Derbs gets the chance to start regularly at a pretty decent standard.

I'm not going to go looking for the stats but I would hazard a guess that Roberts all scoring goals per game in the premierleague is roughly double Sir Matts

The whole thing leaves me feeling disappointed but I can't really argue with the outcome.

Let's face it, Rovers clearly need the money and Sam knows that when you're a bottom half premiership team (which we certainly are now) devoid of creativity then its better to have a big lump up front than a technically sound striker who will score plenty IF given good service. I'm sure the likes of Zola would disagree but then he isn't our manager.

We now don't have a striker under 30!
