Drunx2002 Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Totall agree Bobby G. I've only just heard about this and haven't trawled through the thread much. I voted NO. For a club of our financial clout we cannot afford to waste £5m+ on a striker that may only have a year or two left and doesn't score, I'd much rather we bought two or three up and coming youngsters or foreigners from the lesser leagues and gave them a shot for this amount of money. There is no way we would see that £5m again that's for sure. Secondly. I was against Sam at this stage last season but urged his appointment in the Winter as he was the best chap around to help us out of the brown stuff that we were up to our neck in at that point. Now though he should be rebuilding the team with the Roque and Derbs funds, not signing all his old players from Bolton.....christ, that's Championship manager tactics, not real life! And I know a lot of people here put up with playing Samba up front for the last 2 months of the season and the shocking football there was on offer towards the end. I was hoping that was just to get us over the finishing line but prospective signings of this ilk turn my stomach at the thought of us actually playing like that from now on. NO to Kevin Davies and NO to long ball tactics!

JAL Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 I have to point out again - it's not my idea. However I think it is a good one at this point in time and with what is available...something I have been trying to prove over the past two days. Yes, it's too much in the cold light of day. But you have also been paid far too much for Roque. Sometimes things just happen and you just do them and don't over-analyse. I can't think of anyone better and I have to say the price does not bother me. Finally, I have to say it will probably cost more than £5 million...but that depends on whether you are willing to use guerilla warfare tactics or not. Appreciate your take on the situation Nicko and pointing out some honest points as well as exposing the local rag but paying £5m or more on a 32 year old who failed last time around is incomprehensible to many of us. It doesnt look like a forward progressive step. As a short term deal for Kevin Davies that isnt a problem, but long term what happens then, we can only see one season out of Kevin Davies. Big Sam and the club need to sell the deal to the fans on what happens long term as well as short term.
Grez Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 It seems as though Citeh have decided as many strikers as possible in their squad. Do you think we could have Vassell as the pacey striker to go along with a striker. I would have thought we could get him for free as there is no way he is going to get a sniff next season... he only played 4 games last season and scored 1. Worth a punt at 29.

On last years form at Pompy, before he joined City, Benjani was as good as many around, wonder why his game went!!!
den Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Which bit in bold is that? The bit where i suggest that from all your comments you give the impression of not being averse to the idea of Mr Davies joining us? You forgot to highlight it! I don't think I speak for the majority. I don't think I speak for anyone else in fact though it may sometimes come out that way. I speak for myself, and in my opinion at anything over a couple of million he is too much. Even at that price i personally don't want him but as I said what I or you or anyone else other than Allardyce wants is irrelevant, and polls however you read them, make not a ha'porth of difference. Yes, the bit that I forgot to put in bold I didn't mean you Gumboots either. I was talking generally.
Grez Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 On last years form at Pompy, before he joined City, Benjani was as good as many around, wonder why his game went!!! I agree, both Benjani and Vassell will be available for penauts, especially if City sign Tevez and Eto to go along with Cruz, Bellamy and Robinho
andyman Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 nicko what we havent addressed here or i dont think we have is whether davies would actually want to move here again, hes the captain of bolton, someone who is reveered by bolton fans and seems to be the focal point of their attack, nicko in your heart do you think he would give all that up to come back here again and be a potential target of boo boys? i am not saying any of you lot are

Call me Mister Suspicious, but perhaps the manager knows that Davies is interested which is why he is still on his trail. Sam has been around the block a bit, so he will know who wants to join him and who doesn't. Watch this space when he comes back.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Watch this space when he comes back. When can we expect him to return?
Dave S Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Put it this way...I heard Rovers wanted him three weeks ago but found it hard to believe... /quote] So you've known for three weeks that Davies & Di Santo are the two players to be (possibly) brought in when Derbs leaves. Not necessarily replacements for Santa Cruz perhaps?

I heard that Megson is looking to change Bolton's style of play which may lead to Davies being surplus. From talking to Bolton fans, they don't want to see the back of him as he's a good option but Bolton are in a similar position to us and mabe they too have to sell before they can buy. I understand your view that because of the money from Roque we could theoretically afford to pay over the odds but we surely have to put any money available to better use that a short term battering ram who would be worthless to us as an asset in the future. JW has said it himself, we are a net selling club and to do that you have to have something to sell. Having said that I think the club will back Sam if he really feels this is his man. By the way, if I was Kevin, I'd still be waking up in a cold sweat every so often with a recurring nightmare of his time at Rovers. He would have to have some balls to want to have another go at being successful here.

The one thing that worries me about this (apart from the price) is that Davies is very effective with goal-scoring midfielders running off him - like Stelios and Speed at Bolton. We don't have a midfield like that
broadsword Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 i wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't for the 5 million quid fee!

We don't have a midfield like that At last another piece of sense, if Davies comes, then we find the midfielders to do that job, its like a jigsaw, one piece at a time, but yes, thats how the system works and I am glad someone else sees the plan too!! You could end up buying the wrong players for the system, if Davies is off, maybe Sam will have a plan B

ross-shire rover Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 I remember Ron Davies and Wyn Davies - 2 excellent strikers. There's even Simon Davies , but KEVIN Davies, surely that must be a mistake. I remember a chubby guy who was one the laziest and worst forwards to put on the blue and white halves. Do people mean him ? He's been reasonably successful for Bolton, he's now 32 and we have to pay more than 5 million pounds for him. It's a crazy mixed up world we're living in....
imy9 Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Nicko do you think that we will sign a marque central midfield player now?
nicko Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Nicko do you think that we will sign a marque central midfield player now? You could do with one... I think the Roque replacement issue will have to be settled first. You are two strikers down - with Di Santo due to fill one of those gaps. The Davies thing will have to be resolved. I think Sam will demand that a bid is made, it will get turned down and then the fun really starts.
jannerman Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Can't believe you're all missing one obvious choice.... LUCA TONI!!!! How about Kazim-Richards? Aren't there any decent options in the Championship? Mind you what do I know, but as previously advertised, there's not much out there is there?
nicko Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Can't believe you're all missing one obvious choice.... LUCA TONI!!!! Kazim-Richards? Aren't there any decent options in the Championship? Five hours on from the challenge and all you can come up with is a Sheffield United failure and an unnamed Championship striker. I'm telling you, good strikers are hard to find.

I'm telling you, good strikers are hard to find. Bah, I was working in between the messageboard - honest guv... Ok, come on, give us a clue Nicko, you're club manager/advisor, you have say 6-7m to spend on a striker, who would you enquire about?

There is one I mentioned to you a few weeks ago, his wages may be high but may not be as effective as Davies, Fernando Morientes??
