question is, why would they open the bidding at £15m? when some papers were quoting £10-12m?

be nice if its true - providing they come back in of course!

Because they have had to value Gareth Barry in the current climate and know full well Bentleys valuation.

If you deem Barry and Bentley to be of similar talent, and then factor in age i.e. Barry is three and a half years older than Bentley then surely our player is worth more.

You could argue that Barry is a better player and that perhaps centre midfield is a more important position than the wing but I think you'd be hard pressed to do so sufficiently to overcome the age difference. In five years time Barry will be 32 and his value will almost certainly have dimished. At the same time Bentley would be 28 and could still command the same fee as he would now and possibly more.

From current reports Barry seems to be set to leave Aston Villa and they're holding out for a tidy sum. We'd be well served to let them set the market conditions this year and then let teams bid upwards of that. Factor in a possible world record transfer for Ronaldo, a player who plays in a similar position to Bentley (well ish), and the price trend goes up even further.

I'm not sure that Bentley's antics would endear him to that red nosed bugger but if he's just trousered 50 milion clams and has a need for someone on the right... well probably not but stranger things have happened... big squid at sea and all that.

Finally, unlike the Barry situation where Liverpool are the only aparent suitors, there seem to be a good few teams sniffing around Bentley. Again, any genuine competition isn't exactly gonna cut his price.

Well I think a number of posters are responding with inteligence on the Bentley issue:

1) Villa are focussed on the Barry issue so opening the bidding for Bentley at £15m says to Liverpool that Villa have money and Liverpool don't.

2) Surprisingly, only the Mail group of papers have picked up and run with the Villa bid which rather suggests everyone else thinks it is a stunt

3) If Bentley were in demand, his other suitors would habve made noises even if it were only the press saying it for them. The lack of noise from Spuds or Liverpool or Citeh suggests that Villa have landed a successful pre-emptive blow that prices them out of the market and/or it supports Nicko's suggestion that nobody has Bentley at the top of their wish list.

4) The press could be keeping their powder dry for Ince's press conference today. Ince either has to open a bidding war for Bentley or slam the door shut. I think he will do the latter with the other possible want-away Rovers stars the real targets and recipients of the message "Bentley is not for sale." He can get really bolshy over Bentley and answer any questions about anybody else with a dismissive "You've heard what I've said."

The CM players on here who are leaping at selling Bentley quickly could well be looking at scenario that no other club actually wants to buy Bentley quickly.

My gut feel is that Bentley is an August deal.

IF Ince had lied to John Williams he would have been.

Presumably he didn't, otherwise he would not have been appointed.

Not giving his apologies to the FAW still remains very shabby.

Somehow I have not experienced a feeling of suprise about all that. We may have to force him to get the qualification cos it appears to that he he will do anything but sit down in a classroom and accept being taught anything by someone else.

:rover: DOES ANY ROVERS FAN WANT BENTLEY TO STAY.i for one don't,he has burnt his bridges at ewood as far as i am concerned :brfcsmilie:

I do, he gives us so much. His comments haven't been that bad. He has stated that he would like to progress his career to a CL club, however loves the club and is grateful for us helping him get back on track.

I would rather we held on to him if no top 4 club came in for him and then look to move him on next summer for a larger fee.

I want him to stay, I'm sick of his antics with the media but there aren't many players around that can do what he does for a small fee. He'll still have to perform week in week out if he wants to stay in the england team/squad. Reject any bid below 20 million i say because at the end of the day he hasn't changed, he was always like this its just come to the forefront now because he wants to leave. We have contract protection and we don't need to sell.

What I don't get is why anybody is bothered about these so called qualifications - the Premier League or The FA don't exactly seem that bothered and adhere to their own rules.

Does he really need them - what have managers done that already have them - will they make him do anything different ?

Aren't managers supposed to be individual and adopt their own style?

What do these 'qualifications' consist of.

Is their anything better than hands on experience and learning in the job - he has not exactly been dropped in at the deep end.

Ince is a winner and will demand it as such from his players , and from the interviews I have heard from people who have worked with him Ince the manager is not INCE the immature player.

I didn't like Ince the player in terms of his attitude etc but do in terms of his experience within in football and what he has achieved in his short term management career so far.

He has character and determination and as mentioned has not jumped in at the deep end, just swam very fast to it and I am certain he will prove a good move for us.

Careful waggy thats an irresponsible attitude! Don't go down that road for goodness sake!

If we cannot get our valuation for him this summer and should he stay with BRFC we still have one hell of a player on our books and do NOT want a Lucas Neill mentality starting amongst the Blackburn End 'faithful' do we? That will do nobody any good at all and play right into the hands of clubs like Lpool / Spurs who inevitably would look to pick him up on the cheap!

Bang on the money Flopsy.

Bentley is holding out for Man U, and the move is looking increasingly likely. So much has chaged in the last few months - if we still had Hughes, then he would only consider a move to a club in the Champs League in the north. Now Sparky has gone, he woul consider a move to any club in any European competition, but still wants to stay in the north. Arsenal is not an option, neither is Chelsea. Interestingly, his agent is heavily tied to Spurs, but he would rather stay in the area.

It could have all been so different and I can't help but remember when we played Wigan away. I knew that day would come back to haunt us - if we had won that game, mathematically we would have enough points to be in Europe, but mentally, it could have reversed the slump in form we were suffering from and who knows what could have happened?

I hope he stays but I have lost all hope gradually as I hear news from his camp, coupled with the shambolic start to Ince's career with us (the Wales fiasco). Bentley isn't a bad bloke, but the media are jumping on everything he says, and as we all know he is not the sort to stay silent. He needs a gag, in my opinion.

Surely Bentley is not good enough to replace Ronaldo? He doesnt even have a third of the impact that Ronaldo does.

I think if Ronaldo buggers off to Madrid, then ManUre will be sniffing around our David. And if he goes, so long and thanks for the fish.

if bentley wants to leave let him

if ince can persuade him to stay-id be delighted if he did..

fact is bentley wants to leave-i would prefer players who want to play for the club, and not just use us..

altho they aint at the same level as bentley-id be happy with either lennon or pennant + cash for bentley-therefore we have a decent right winger and some cash..

How does anybody replace arguably the best player in the world? Bentley does have a lot of similarity to Beckham. Rem Beckham wasn't good at much (couldn't tackle, dribble, head a ball, sprint or use his left foot) but MU used his excellent right foot to the limit.

The used to have Cole & Yorke - both decent in the air. Also Sheringham who was quality.

They would need to sign someone like Santa Cruz too, who will stay at ewood.

If Ince cant convince him to stay then it will be interesting to see what they say. Do they say "Tough, your staying" and see how he reacts, as Capello will be watching? Or do they say goodbye, take as much cash as we can and get rid asap?

IF the reported £15m bid was true then £20m would surely secure his move away?
