Miker Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Hey what about this guy... considering we're looking at so many French league strikers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillaume_Hoarau I remember seeing him play for PSG in the UEFA Cup a couple of times and thinking he would make a good replacement for Santa Cruz back in January given his height. Probably too expensive or not for sale now that I read his Wikipedia page... SIGH.

philipl Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Got a feeling the tide might be turning for Sunderland. Their money for wages is blowing us out of the water for Chamakh who will probably end up there. Crouch's willingness to sacrifice wages for location means Spurs are screwing Pompey through the floor on selling price and might even get Crouch to take a small cut on basic wages. Fulham are not Crouch's preferred destination although I think he would do exceptionally well there and perhaps not at Spurs. Zamora's problems with Hull have not helped Fulham who could not move decisively when the chance was there. If Spurs get Crouch, they will need to sell and that means the £12m to £16m gap on Bent to Sunderland might close pretty rapidly- Sunderland won't pay him £90k a week but enough to help him forego :ondon comforts. Getting Sunderland out of the market for strikers will not release Jones who is staying with the Mackems but gets shot of a lowly club who can pay big wages and finally puts Rovers into play for acquiring strikers. We have not been a serious option thus far this window and rightly so IMO.
alexanders Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I will be a bit dissapointed if Sunderland end up with Chamakh. I would see him as a very good replacement for Santa Cruz, especially at the price quoted: around £5-6m
alexanders Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I couldn't edit the post above Nicko: Are we runners for Negredo? 08.36 Alvaro Negredo's agent claims Premier League clubs have tabled bids for the Real Madrid striker.
S15 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Promising - Di Santo still looks likely i think. That leaves us with McCarthy, Roberts, Di Santo & Hoilett - compare to last season of Benni & Samba Again you confirm your role of hideously bias spin doctor. Last season we had Santa Cruz, McCarthy, Roberts, Derbyshire, not 'Benni and Samba.' Injuries led to that situation, SOMETHING THAT COULD EASILY HAPPEN THIS SEASON. The situation remains simple, as things stand we are weaker than last season. We have sold our best player and we haven't replaced him. McCarthy and Roberts haven't been good enough for two seasons now, why on earth would that change with an extra pre season under their belts?

modes98 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 The situation remains simple, as things stand we are weaker than last season. We have sold our best player and we haven't replaced him. McCarthy and Roberts haven't been good enough for two seasons now True we haven't replaced him but the sam is looking to sort that situation out and has to sign someone before the end of the window. I disagree about McCarthy though, if he played all our league games he would get 15 goals. The only reason he hasn't is he sits on the bench to much. Roberts is a decent sub but just can't finish one on one, which is a massive problem for any striker. Hughsey: Holiett is a winger isn't he?
LeftWinger Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Hughsey: Holiett is a winger isn't he? He can play on the wing or upfront. I think he started the other night for the reserves upfront before coming off didn't he?

Because he's not good enough for the team. The bloke has been overweight for 12 months, and 50-70 % of his goals are penalties. And from all I've heard, getting a decent striker is proving quite the problem. All things considered, we were always unlike to get someone as good as Santa Cruz, but it looking increasingly more so like we are going to have to end up settling for someone, as opposed to signing a top target. Again, spin what you will, but our midfield and attack is not good enough to be getting ahead of 12th-15th in the Premier League, and is still poor enough to see us in another dog fight.

The bloke has been overweight for 12 months, and 50-70 % of his goals are penalties. We'd have been relegated without him last season. You've still got to stick the penalties away - if Roberts was taking them we would be in trouble. He's got a lot to prove this year to get in the South Africa squad for the World Cup.

But that is a vicious cycle because if he plays constantly then he stays fit. For some reason he finds the right positions to score goals easily and it doesn't matter how "overweight" he is because he scores goals (which is what we are currently trying to buy). Penalties still count as goals by the way, they aren't a forgone conclusion even though they are easier. Santa Cruz was a quality player in that first season but did nothing prior to it or last season. IMO buying in a youngster with potential is a better option than an old boy. They have the potential to fly and earn us plenty of money to reinvest in the team. Unfortunately sometimes you have to settle for players sometimes, as you can't get everyone you want.
TheNews Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Been chatting to a couple of Arsenal fans this morning about Chamakh They both laughed and said why would thet want him They said we have Arshavin, Van Persie, Eduardo, Vela and Walcott, they doubt if they will replace Adebayor as we have more impotant matter to deal with in defence and now that Nasri is out for 3 months a midfielder. One of the arrogant ###### said in all honesty do you think we'd go after a player that was linked to You or Sunderland!

tcj_jones Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 I share Shilito's concerns. Our midfield and attack is nowhere near good enough at present to suggest us we'll do anything more than just about survive a relegation dogfight. Unless N'Zonzi turns out to be a revelation (people seem to forget that he comes from a similar standard of football that Keith Andrews did last season) then were are hugely inadequate at CM, while we look set to miss out on just about every single forward we have our eyes on.
LeftWinger Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 They said we have Arshavin, Van Persie, Eduardo, Vela and Walcott I'd say they certainly need another striker. While the above players are all talented, there is no powerful front man there, they're all too light-weight. There are also a few injury prone ones amongst them, and other than Eduardo, no out and out goalscorer.

I agree we will have a weaker strike force than last term, and that it is imperative that we sign a good striker. On the midfield - there is little doubt that we are in a stonger position than last year, just by the signing of Diouf as much as anything else, alongside the far better management of the team by Sam compared to Ince. Last year we had no right wing threat at all, whereas Diouf does create problems and work exceptionally hard. Of course we have lost Tugay, which is an issue despite his age, but we have signed EVH and N'Zonzi, plus Judge and Doran are looking decent. A lot depends on what these four offer the team. At present we just don't know. If they turn out to have little impact we may be in trouble. But I am encouraged at the moment. And (especially for Den) I do think there is mileage in using Emerton and Warnock in midfield now we have signed other full backs. Those two are much better options than Andrews and Mokoena who we used last year. To be completely honest I think we are going to either buy one striker and loan Di Santo or buy two strikers. A mdifielder is not going to happen unless we manage to sell someone.

socngill Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Nice to see so many Rovers fans being optimistic When Benni and Roberts played together last season they scored goals. The two of them prevented us from getting relegated and had Roberts not got his injury I think we would have finished higher. Not because he would have scored a shed load but because he and Benni have a great understanding and together they would have created and scored more goals. If we start the season with Benni, Roberts, Gally and Di Santo I wouldn't be too concerned. Of course I'd rather we went out and bought a top quality striker, but seeing as they seem to be thin on the ground, or far too expensive, I'd prefer we didn't waste our money. Gally knows he has to prove himself this season. Benni wants to get back into the SA squad for the World Cup and Di Santo will have something to prove coming here on loan. All hungry, which will only be good for the club. As for the rest of the team Sam has ensured we are far stronger than last season. Simply bringing in Givet and Diouf has seen to that without the addition of some young lads with a mixture of pace and strength. We've got a good squad, and even if Grella, Dunn and Reid only play 10 games each because of injury we have plenty of back up in Warnock, Emerton, N'Zonzi and Andrews. it's a far better squad than we started with last season (except for the loss of Cruz, but then he spent more time talking to the Paraguayan press and sitting on the treatment table than actually playing) and a far better manager as well. Without a new striker we won't be qualifying for Europe, but we certainly won't be in a relegation battle.
