Miker Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 True, but I think people (including me) are taking Di Santo as a done deal. If he doesn't turn up and we don't get a new striker, then yes I think we will be in a weak position (up front). Some people just seem really thick to me or just serial panickers. Does anyone actually truly believe that Sam won't sign a single striker before the start of the season? He's gone out and said we clearly need one and that he's looking for one, just because he hasn't bought one yet, doesn't mean he won't. As it stands we have a solid defence with some great options in all areas, we have a keeper who was in great form at the end of the season and should hopefully continue it, while so many people criticise our midfield, we actually have some quality midfielders in the team, who, for one reason or another haven't been able to perform to their full potential due to injuries or whatever other issues. Obviously Sam has faith in them being able to overcome those problems and perform next season, although I'm sure he will look at more options in midfield if his budget allows for it, as he's said previously. Only area we're really weak in right now is strikers and Sam will address it, he's not going to go into next season without doing so. People here have to get over the idea that players and managers are commodities, rather than human beings that play football as their job or their career and have an obligation to perform as well as they can. This includes the manager, who's job it is to raise a good enough team to be able to achieve the goals they set out for next season.
modes98 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Birmingham have, and Sunderland will spend big this summer, so they too are very questionable. Birmingham have spent lots and taken lots of gambles. Benitez could be amazing or poor. Ferguson is probably past it. Johnson might be good enough for the premiership. The best player they have brought in imo is Joe Hart, with Taylor in goal they would have struggled like before, but he will earn them a fair few points next season. Him and Tiny Taylor! Nobody seems to want to go to Sunderland. God knows why it is a lovely place but if they pull the trigger on some moves then we can swoop in and get ours targets.
Roost Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Chamakh wants Blackburn Watching that without sound makes it looks like he is trying to flick a bogey with each hand......................
socngill Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 For me, the squad is the same that finished the season, minus RSC. Exactly! And with that side (which for the greater part didn't include Cruz) we finished (form wise) as European contenders. So what's the problem? And, not only did we not have Cruz for most of Sams time last season, we also have a third striker in Gally which we didn't have at the end of last season. Plus players back from injury who were injured and the arrival of 3 young midfield players. So I don't see how you can still be so pessimistic. Plus, we still have time to splash the cash.
S15 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Excuse me mr shilito! We became better than both Stoke and West Ham after Sam was appointed. Ah I see. Sorry, it's just I though Stoke beat Sams' Rovers 1-0 on the way to finshing a few places ahead of us with a significant points advantage. And didn't West Ham finish in the top 7 or 8? Is there no 'out of school' summer camps on?' This messageboard gets more fustrating every summer.

It's not good trying to belittle someone whose opinion differs from yours
nicko Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 Lyon seem very keen on Chamakh...is he the only striker around just now?...and still no mention of Rovers. http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2009/...re-chamakh.html
ABBEY Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 It's not good trying to belittle someone whose opinion differs from yours but his opinion (shilleto ) is right the teams finished above us so how did we become better than them ? im confused.
beerwins Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Chamakh wants Blackburn Please tell me were not looking at signing rick astley

Sorry, but the way people on here are talking sounds like the transfer window has shut. There is a lot more activity yet still to happen in the market. Once it is shut and if Rovers have not done anything, then is the time to moan. But till then, patience is a virtue. Man city will have to shift some players as they will not want unhappy players disrupting the squad etc. A few will leave Chelsea in my view. In football anything can happen. The only decent thing RSC did for Rovers last season was give the club some dosh, apart from that he was just a sick note and it would not surprise me if something simular happens to him at city - he will not be the first choice striker. Lyon seem very keen on Chamakh...is he the only striker around just now?...and still no mention of Rovers. http://www.lequipe.fr/Football/breves2009/...re-chamakh.html I suggest he is another RSC where the media are concerned. He does seem to do a lot of talking to the media - something I am sure Sam wouldn't be happy with. There are other strikers around, but available and willing to come to Rovers with the right price tag / wage is another thing. I think spuds will have to reconsider the price they have on Bent - or they won't be doing anything in this market.

Seems a lot of clubs interested in him but i can't say i've seen much of him before
socngill Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 european contenders? socngill are you on shrooms? Based on our form from when Sam took over to the end of the season. If that form was spread out over a whole season we would have been challenging for Europe. And we played with McCarthy, Roberts (until his injury) and Samba as our attacking threat and an entire midfield missing through injury. And no, but it would make the working day sooo much more enjoyable
nicko Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 How good a player is Chamakh. Seems a lot of clubs interested in him but i can't say i've seen much of him before I haven't seen enough to judge but any time I catch highlights he looks like a fiery type who gets stuck in, scores goals with head and feet and would probably do well over here. Trouble is there are so few top strikers available right now that his price has gone through the roof and there is a queue for him by the looks of it. If Wenger really does rate him then the chances are he is good.
Dave S Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 Got to say we are moving from the Patience time zone to the Panic time zone. I haven't been too concerned.....up 'til now. The most significant close season signings Rovers have made over the last few years have been.. Robinson 25th July Santa Cruz 28th July McCarthy 28th July Bellamy 08th July Pedersen 27th August (Soccerbase) I think we have a week before the lack of a striker becomes a real concern.
nicko Posted July 22, 2009 Author Posted July 22, 2009 I think we have a week before the lack of a striker becomes a real concern. Those dates are very revealing and interesting... Especially as most of those deals were actually teed up at least a week in advance, so really Rovers need to know who they want now never mind actually sign them. If Di Santo is done in the next few days - and there isn't any reason why it shouldn't be - then that would at least mean one striker in.
spencey7 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 How people can sit here and say we are stronger is beyond me, as anyone with half a brain/ no blue and white tinted specs on, can see WE ARE NOT. Frustrating isn't it? This is exactly why I keep mentioning the fanatical "SHUT UP AND SUPPORT THE TEAM" brigade, who would rather just put their fingers in their ears and say they're not listening than actually think for themselves and face up to the facts. When Roque is here "he's one of the best strikers we've ever had" - and the moment he leaves its "we won't miss him". There's something a little askew with that logic. I love Blackburn Rovers, and am deeply saddened by the state we're in. With our current squad, we'll be struggling next season.

S15 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 It's not good trying to belittle someone whose opinion differs from yours Unbelievable. You take all sorts of flack as your opinion differs to those you are having a discussion with, yet the the moment you give a little back this kind of crap appears. Anything constructive to add Aggy?

socngill Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 When Roque is here "he's one of the best strikers we've ever had" - and the moment he leaves its "we won't miss him". There's something a little askew with that logic. I'm not denying this at all. The problem is, he hardly played last season. I am not saying not replacing him is a good idea, but simply pointing out that we have more cover up top than we had during Sam's time last season when he got a lot of points on the board. Without Cruz and without Derbyshire. and without the injured Reid, Dunn, Emerton, Grella who are all (almost) back to full fitness. The squad at the moment is stronger than the one we ended last season with. You can't deny it. All the players who were available are still here and available, plus a shed load extra who have either come back from loan, injury or been bought. I am not saying Cruz was crap and I'm glad he's gone. A fit Cruz is unreplaceable. Unfortunately we are not replacing a fit Cruz, but an injured one who last season couldn't keep his mouth shut.

At this moment in time we are weaker IMO but the season is still weeks away. I'm prepared to save my bullets until the window closes.
spencey7 Posted July 22, 2009 Posted July 22, 2009 The squad at the moment is stronger than the one we ended last season with. You can't deny it. All the players who were available are still here and available, plus a shed load extra who have either come back from loan, injury or been bought. But last season's squad was stronger in pre-season than this one is. Things inevitably happen over the course of a season - injuries, suspensions, dips in form. At the present time our squad cannot cope with that. I am not saying Cruz was crap and I'm glad he's gone. A fit Cruz is unreplaceable. Unfortunately we are not replacing a fit Cruz, but an injured one who last season couldn't keep his mouth shut. I don't get this logic either. I'm not saying for a second that I agree with "player power" and their desire to speak to the press when they want a move, but it's just the way things are now. It doesn't make them any less of a player. Every game Roque played last season he still looked the part.
