To be honest I have not been too excied by transfer windows in a while, The excitement tends to come from Nickos posts!! But if you think about it, the signings of our recent best players like RSC, Benni, Bentley & Bellamy were all gambles for different reasons!!

I would like to have a few showpiece signings to brag about but then again they could end up being flops & the last thing i would want is to be another spurs!!!

Samaritans number is 662424, there are quite a few on here I'd be putting on suicide watch!

Come on fellas cheer up, we are midway through a very necessary re-building process, with up to now nobody leaving (save for Tugs who I can just about come to terms with) that I do not disagree with.

This includes £18m for RSC. Speaking of which if you think you can keep an employee happy for any length of time who has been offered double pay, then it really is wakey wakey time.

Owners are killing us? No I disagree, I'd say that they are saving us from the financial madness currently ongoing.

but only if we had a replacement lined up first though?

Missed the boat???? - I can't believe you're complaining that we haven't signed a player who doesn't seem to fancy moving north, rejected Sam's interest in January and wanted £90k to sign for Sunderland (like we could afford that?!?) just on the offchance that Arsenal would come in and take him off us for a profit immediately / 6-12 months time....

All hypothetical but surely it would be slightly easier to find a second replacement with an extra wadge of money to spend?

Not complaining, just hypothesing. Granted you'd have needed a crystal ball to anticipate any imminent Arsenal interest in Crouch but surely if we made a high calibre signing like Bent/Crouch and they did well at Ewood and forced their way into regular England contention interest in them would be high and we'd always have the option to sell at a profit.

I don't think the managers buying those players thought they were gambling too heavily. They all had a pedigree. We had little cash then as well.

The difference this time, is that we have taken an absolute fortune for Rocky and Bentley in the last 12 months - somewhere in the region of £28m? Still we head towards the transfer window without bringing in anything like the required quality - for either.

I think it would be easier if I had confidence that some of the transfer fee wasn't put aside to keep the bank happy. IMO, we'd be in a similar situation to the one we are in now with, but with a possibility that some of the targets we were chasing had moved on or had become more expensive with the knowledge we'd made a few bob.

I'm all for trying to sign someone like Crouch/Bent who is likely to do well and become profitable, but unfortunately it seems that astronomical wage demands will rule us out. You'd want to think they'd be desperate to force their way into Capello's England squad for S.Africa next summer.

I can't see us signing anyone other than Zigic or Jones after we've moved on from Davies. Sam's got a limited budget and a very specific way of playing, which means we need a targetman upfront who can hold the line well and give defenders hell.

Ironically, RSC would have been superb for this, whereas Crouch seems to struggle to have the same impact.

Anyone else feeling we got done by the Greeks over the fee for Matty now that City look to have got £3m from Sheffield Utd for Chad Evans?

£1.5m, possibly rising to £3m. So no not really when we got £3.5m up front + 30% sell on clause in there

Just an unrelated question to any Sunderland fan:

Will Nosworthy and A.Ferdinand be in the starting lineup next season? Need a tips for Fantasy =)

On Rovers:

Chachmah would be great, although I am pretty sure he won't be coming.

For me,,I would be very happy with Kenqwyne Jones, or a last minute, panic - Oscar Cardozo bid =)

I would be suprised if Nosworthy is still here to be honest. Ferdinand is probably in the starting line up as it stands, but if we sign another centre back then even his position might not be guaranteed. Depends what Da Silva is like but i'm assuming hes a starter

Have to keep an eye out for Harry Redknapp spouting off to the media about Samba or Nelsen and about them being good players (the usual sign of Redknapp trying to tap a player up). Especially now as all three of their main central defenders are doubtful for the start of the season.

Caicedo signed for Sporting Lisbon on a one year loan from Manchester city.

I guess i was looking at old news. I was wondering if he'd serve well as a cheap signing. Not the "main" striker signing but, a strong body to rattle the defense. He seemed to be a hard worker with what little i saw of him.

Have wondered that myself for a while too. There's no doubt that while still small, there's a constantly growing population of fans turning to real football. Instead of letting them all go to ManUre or Chelski, signing a well known American from MLS or the USMNT would bring a lot more supporters from this side of the pond then I think people realize. Look to see how many Oguchi Onyewu shirts you'll see now over here, I guarantee people who have never followed the sport will now be AC Milan fans that he's on the team. (Though his mistake that led tot he goal tonight didn't do any favors)

My friend who works in Bristol, C.N. at ESPN said that ESPN's number 1 target for the next year is to vuild up coverage on and prep for the world cup to draw viewers and ratings. Now is the time to exploit the growth of soccer in America.

thats' CT. (Connecticut).

While I don't speak for anyone on here but myself, I will say that i've gotten quite tired of the 'exploiting the American soccer explosion'. We been hearing that claptrap since the mid 70's. If you cannot put together a product that resembles the football played by the rest of the world, ie: divisions featuring promotions/demotions -- i'm prepared to completely tune it out--hell, been doing that since the onset of this latest 'enterprise'.

Very sensible view from someone actually in the US. I imagine it's shared by the vast majority of fans. Unless the US wins the World Cup I personally don't see it making any further inroads over there of any consequence. Too many established 'American' sports.

Still, it seems to have made huge inroads back home in Oz, so you never know.

Nicko, one of my chelsea supporting mates whos usually right on the money says that Di Santo ahs impressed Ancolotti so much hes staying to fight with Sturridge as back ups to Drogba & Anelka.

Says Sheva & Pizarro are on their way out instead.

Please tell me hes wrong.
