villadan Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Why would his price go up when he won't have kicked a ball until December? Because the other managers would have had more balls to sign him and started a bidding war? Just a suggestion as to why.... Also does it not suggest MON has money to burn as he is spending a big sum on an injured player? Either that or he is bonkers....

j166429 Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Why would his price go up when he won't have kicked a ball until December? Because he will be fit???
nicko Posted July 24, 2009 Author Posted July 24, 2009 Because the other managers would have had more balls to sign him and started a bidding war? Just a suggestion as to why.... Think it's a totally mad move. Villa need players NOW. Even selling Knight without a replacement seems odd.
adjam82 Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Why would his price go up when he won't have kicked a ball until December? Because of the competition. He is a left footed England International. You only have to see some of the prices for Experienced premier league players...Adebayor £25m, Barry £12m (one year left on contract), RSC even Kevin Doyle £6.5m!!! O'Neill has also been after him for a while but did not try to tap him up through the press a la Redknapp: Downing revealed that Middlesbrough turned down an earlier approach for him from O’Neill six months ago without telling him of Villa’s interest at the time. “Speaking to the manager he said he tried to get me in January, which I did not know,” added Downing. “I thought it was just Spurs. Once I heard from day one in the summer that he wanted to buy me I wanted to go. “It’s a good club, it’s on the up. “I thought I’d be going to Spurs but once I spoke to Martin O’Neill I was flattered to meet him. Therefore if you can afford to wait for the player you want you may as well save the money. Think it's a totally mad move. Villa need players NOW. Even selling Knight without a replacement seems odd. O'Neill signed 8 players last summer. At this time last year I believe he had only got 1 (sidwell). As frustrating as he is i'm sure he has got deals lined up and he is ready to push the button if needed. But all the same it IS frustrating!
LeChuck Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I see you're not big on planning for the future nicko, what with championing signing Davies and thinking the Downing move is bonkers. £12 million for Downing is a steal when you see what other young, British players go for, even if he does have to miss a few months.
Hughesy Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Downing is not good enough for City - and is not better than Petrov Everton wouldnt pay over £10m for him either. And spurs? Doesnt Modric play on the left? Either way Downing is crap, and is injured - bigger risk so surely = lower price. He is international, but id soon put him behind A Young & Joe Cole for the left wing. Have Villa replaced Barry & Laursen yet?! Are they skint or something?!

Surely if Downing is as crap as you say he is you would be able to work out that spending £12m without replacing Barry and Laursen would mean that Villa are not skint? Anyway none of my business back to lurking for me....
Commondore Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 The strangest move of the summer just got even stranger... http://www.football365.com/story/0,17033,8...5451455,00.html Anyone want to say this one isn't bizarre now? Wow, Boro should be so happy with this deal it's insane. I mean, it's not even certain that Downing will live up to his promise, when (or even IF) he gets fit again, and then scoring 12 million of a player that wants a move real bad... Well done!

Have Villa replaced Barry & Laursen yet?! Are they skint or something?! Spurs WERE after him, that is a fact. Redknapp did his usual comments in January. Everton were willing to spend £12m on Defour, a risk signing from the Belgian League. Maybe he is crap?? I for one trust the manager as he has had 2 consecutive top 6 finishes and had us motoring before fatigue set in last season. O'Neill will replace Barry and Laursen but maybe those players are not available at the moment. They will not sign a Van Der Vaart etc but who really thought of Young, Petrov, Milner etc
EwoodGlory Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 And I believe the Curbishly tale...but who is exactly in charge at Newcastle to make that decision? The tea lady? Llambias is running it from Fifty London at the moment. Ashley is on other business at the moment. Someone is off to Middle East again soon in a last gasp attempt to flog it there. Maybe Harris is back from holiday to do that?
socngill Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Anybody willing to pay £12m for a fit Downing is bonkers. The guy is massively overrated. He's third choice left midfielder for England, behind Cole and Young. And that's only because we lack many decent players for that role. I'd rather play Gerrard out there than Downing. If a fit Downing is worth £12m, then Cruz is worth £25m and Gamst is worth £15m. I'd probably prefer Treacy

Yeah, Davies led Bolton to the Championship didn't he. Happens to be their skipper. Check. If you think signing Downing for an over-the-top fee for the pleasure of seeing him on your fitness table until your faint hopes of making the top six disappear then that's fine too.
Hughesy Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Spurs WERE after Roque, Pedersen, Warnock - but nothing happened their either! Fatigue? Your team got found out....nothing to do with Fatigue. Who thought of Petrov?? What his best buddy from Celtic - everyone expected that move I think!!

You not on wrong thread - this is a transfer topic Anyway - looks like another week is going by while the 'blind leading the blind' striker chase goes on

Tim Southampton Rover Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Nicko, do you know if Claudio Pizarro is being looked at?
Ricky Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 If you read the name of this thread it is quite clearly a thread for blackburn rovers transfers. Stuart downing fortunately does not fall into this catagory. If our villa friends wish to talk about him maybe they could do it on a villa messageboard. Alan curbishly is not being linked to a job with us so we can leave that one alone as well. I know there has to be a little debate about other teams where it may affect us but it's just going too far recently. Please keep on topic.
nicko Posted July 24, 2009 Author Posted July 24, 2009 Peculiar one...random as the young 'uns say... I hear Senegalese full back Omar Daf has been at Rovers on trial for the past couple of days. Free agent after a long spell with Sochaux. No idea where this fits in the grand plan. Not worth keeping for the 11 o'clocker either. Feel free to discuss. Nicko, do you know if Claudio Pizarro is being looked at? Not heard that one...but after your Treacy for Sheff U triumph I will look into it and take it seriously.
broadsword Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Yeah, that would work. Have you seen the size of next door's cat?
Tim Southampton Rover Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 I hear Senegalese full back Omar Daf has been at Rovers on trial for the past couple of days. I've never heard of Omar Daf before but after reading a few match reports on him, it suggests he's a left back. Does that possibly mean Olsson going out on loan or maybe Warnock is now seen as a key member of our midfield?
Tim Southampton Rover Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Bit more info on Daf In his early 30s, had quite a few injuries in his career especially a few years ago which kept him out the national team. Wikipedia states he has a french passport. According to some French website, it says he hasn't featured often either due to injuries or just being a back up. He hasn't played over 20 games in a season since 2001-02 season. It does state that he's a solid defender, excellent in positioning, and a precise tackler. Doesn't look like he's scored either but the stats on the website could just be wrong...so maybe the Senegalese Rob Jones. (It doesn't state that last bit!)

Anyone else get the feeling - Di Santo will stay at Chelsea and they will offer Pizzaro instead
