ROVERS Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 if it is Pogrebnyak that B.Sam is looking at, then we really need some serious chances created for him from our midfield.
Hughesy Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Vagner Love please. How many people on here have actually watched "Poggy" at least 4 or 5 times??
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Vagner Love please. How many people on here have actually watched "Poggy" at least 4 or 5 times?? I have seen him play in the Uefa cup and for Russia and he is a very decent player. Vagner Love is well out of our reach, Poggy probably would be as well if his contract wasn't running out. 3 months to go on his contract means we should be able to get him for a decent fee and have some money to spend on a central midfielder. I'm not getting my hopes up because i don't in all honesty think he will come, but i am happy that we are at least trying to make a move him. (That's if its him we are looking at of course, considering his price and our budget we should be!)

If he is so good then why hasn't anybody else been in for him?
Billy Castell Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 What chance Poggy will be another Benni/RSC/Bellamy and will want to move to a 'bigger club' 2 weeks after signing? Vanger Love would be astonishing, and when the time comes, he will be worth lots of £.
American Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Vanger Love would be astonishing, and when the time comes, he will be worth lots of £. Give him squad #69 and we'd make a fortune from shirt sales....
Stuart Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 What chance Poggy will be another Benni/RSC/Bellamy and will want to move to a 'bigger club' 2 weeks after signing? I think 2 weeks is a bit harsh but bringing in and moving on players is how we make money these days. And until we get someone in who wants to put their own money into the club, its going to be how we survive. So, yes, let's hope that does happen!
Ricky Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Poggy would fit the bill if he could be persuaded. Cheaper fee means we can afford the wages. Out of contract in a few months so not going to cost a bomb.
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 My question is - if he now only has 3 months to go on his contract. If he is so good then why hasn't anybody else been in for him? I don't know why this is the case. A few possible reasons why: 1- Some clubs may be waiting for his contract to run down completely and sign him on a free. 2- The Russian season is still in full flow, started on the 14th March and ends in November, some clubs may want to see how he does this season and make a move when he's a free agent. 3- The manager situation at Zenit- Advocaat is going to leaving Zenit in January. They owners may want to see what the new manager wants to do in regard to players, whether a new manager wants Poggy as part of their plans or not. Overall i think its a longshot we will land him, that's even if we are interested him. Its a shame really because i think he has all the qualities tall, strong, good header of the ball can shield it and finish with either foot (he has a very decent left foot) to be a success in this league.

Also Zenit are a good team who play champions league football, he's not going to move to just any mediocre club and just because a big club doesn't think he's good enough for them doesn't mean he's not good enough for us.
Hughesy Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Thought a player out of contract can start talking when he has 6 months to go, so why hasn't he already got a new club??
spencey7 Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Plus who's to say he hasn't been talking to other clubs? Exactly! As I've been saying for longer than I care to remember - Pogrebnyak fits the bill perfectly. He has every attribute we're looking for and - to somewhat pacify our fans who don't enjoy Allardyce's particular "tactical approach" - is a genuinely good footballer to boot. The suspicion with which he's being viewed by some on this message board is reminiscent of McCarthyism!
tcj_jones Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 What chance Poggy will be another Benni/RSC/Bellamy and will want to move to a 'bigger club' 2 weeks after signing? Unfortunately, it would be exactly the same with 9/10 quality players that we will ever sign.
LeChuck Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 There is little to suggest Pogrebnyak is definitely the answer on his CV, and there are a few good reasons for why other clubs are wary of bidding for him. He's only been with Zenit for two years, before that his career was spent moving around between poor Russian teams, with a couple of failed spells with Spartak early on. His goal record with Zenit is about 1 every 3 games, which isn't great when you consider Jo was doing better than 1 every 2 with CSKA. There are reasons to be careful with this one, but he's certainly one of the more exciting names on the list because he has looked impressive every time I've seen him. I'm not sure why people ask 'why has no-one else bid/bought/signed him'. You could ask that about almost every player we've bought in the past, it doesn't mean they're not good enough.
Steve Moss Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Pogrebnyak seems like a very good choice, if he is Sam's target. Best of all signing Pogrebnyak might mean there is money left over for a few more players, which would be outstanding. My fingers are crossed.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 People are getting a bit ahead of themselves here. The only source of this "hint" is from a not-very-reliable Yorkshire Radio station. While I can also see no point in them making it up, it could well be Chinese whispers. And even then, it might be another player beside Poggy. That said, I agree it looks like he is at least one of the targets. Just don't take it as gospel.
Beta Ray Bill Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Thought a player out of contract can start talking when he has 6 months to go, so why hasn't he already got a new club?? They don't have to talk to other clubs.
Hughesy Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 No but if he is that special then surely he would of already spoken to bigger clubs??
philipl Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Pav and Arsh have not covered themselves in glory at Arsenham so I suspect there is a bit of wariness of Russians. Plus signing them was not exactly a piece of cake either was it? For what its worth, there are pundits and ordinary fans who rate Pogy higher than either Pav or Arsh.
RoverRich Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I think Arshavin had a fairly good half season. Yeah, I was about to say the same thing. He has done well since coming over here especially seeing as he had to adapt quickly. Some people see him as one of the reasons they were strong in the latter stages of the season.
DeadlyDirk Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 In the english league, as well as the spanish and italian and other leagues I'm, sure they can talk to other clubs from outside their domestic league when they have 6 months left on their contract but it's not the same for every league. The russian FA may not allow him to talk to other clubs until the end of the season or perhaps until the contract has actually expired. Even if he can talk to other clubs, like I said earlier how do we know he hasn't? Were not his agent, he could have 348 offers on his desk at home and he's deciding on which is the best deal or perhaps the deals he's been offered thus far haven't interested him. He's already at a good club in Zenit who play champions league football, he won't just move to anyone so perhaps it's a case of some clubs being not good enough for him while the likes of Barce, Inter, Chelsea (Insert long list of top teams here) etc etc aren't prepared to take a chance on him. Just because a big club hasn't taken him yet doesn't mean he couldn't do a good job for us. Perhaps we could tempt him with the offer of premiership football and a decent signing on fee and wages because of what we'd save on the presumably lowish transfer fee considering he is out of contract in November. You could also say why didn't other clubs buy Santa Cruz when he was available for less than 4m? He was a decent player.
hi-jaq Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Yeah, I was about to say the same thing. He has done well since coming over here especially seeing as he had to adapt quickly. Some people see him as one of the reasons they were strong in the latter stages of the season. I agree here... Did he not rip us to peices when we played them??? Arshavin is top quality... On the otherhand, I think we are lucky that Pogrebnyak was injured during the Euro's, because he's a good quality player & look what that tournament has done for the good players in that squad. I think Pavlyuchenko is too erratic & he's not really a team player, plus its too sunny in London, I reckon if it is Pogrebnyak we go for & he signs, the grim north will do him just fine!!!
The Rover of Finland Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 We can´t be sure Poggy is even the target Sam´s checking. And I still can´t see him coming Ewood. This board is much too optimism right now. And yes, I would welcome him open arms.
