DeadlyDirk Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 OK then... Sam has been over watching the Pogster. Obviously going right down the list of alternatives now. I believe it is pretty well advanced because from what I hear both the player and the club have also been spoken to in the last 24 hours. The player didn't score in a pretty dull 0-0er. He is available, but there may something of a surprise in the price you have to pay...but that's another story. I don't think this one is over the line, but I would say that Poggy is now favourite because he is available and may be interested this time. Can't say my heart skips with joy at that news, but there we go. I think one or two other names are being juggled with too, so the next few days may be interesting. For what it's worth I cannot believe Sam would take Mido. A word with his mate Brucie would have ended that interest before it began. If he's 2m on the cheap though he might consider it? Thanks for the update nicko on the scouting mission, turns out the slip by Yorkshire media was right then, be interesting what to see the story over the price is, I said perhaps they would rather let him go for a free when his contract expires rather than let him go in the middle of their season, maybe they still wan't a big fee unless it's one of those deals where he gets a cut or a former club are owed money so they still want a lot. Interesting times ahead

RibbleValleyRover Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Excellent if true, i think he could be the perfect striker for the sort of money we are talking. I hope the deal happens.
EwoodGlory Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I heard it was Pompey in for Mido, seems they're shopping in the bargain basement.
my_name_is_Earl Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Hi Nicko, thanks for confirming what a lot of people thought. Would you expect a transfer to be concluded if you were to put your money on it? I.e. will this be 43rd (?) and counting...

Interesting times ahead You would consider him at £2 million, any more and he is an almighty risk. His CV is very mixed...moved around Russia more than you would want. But the fact the manager is over there - with an agent in tow - tells me this one is very hot.

nicko Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 I presume you do not rate this player Nicko - any particular reason? I have not seen much of the guy, but two people I know watched him recently and both used the term 'big lump.' Is the surprise that the price involves cash plus a player? Benni off to Russia?! The price should be low, but we are talking about Russians here... I don't see Benni fancying Leningrad somehow.
PAFELL Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I have not seen much of the guy, but two people I know watched him recently and both used the term 'big lump.' Big lump as in Samba or big fat lump

nicko Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Big lump as in Samba or big fat lump Samba is a big unit and a very good player...in defence and occasionally attack.
DeadlyDirk Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I actually thought he did okay today but obviously didn't see the one first half chance he missed, this review of the game here says he was terrible. Gives his overall review as 'F Pogrebnyak: 3. Dismal performance. Did nothing of value and badly missed his chances.' That's a rating out of 10. Still think he did okay, worked very hard for the team but didn't have a lot of service playing up top on his own. So far he's the best I've seen available that we might be able to get so I'd be happy to have him but I'm a bit worried he's not the sort of striker that can create something on his own and will rely heavily on decent service that we might struggle to provide unless we can strengthen the midfield with some true quality. If we get Bentley back to ping it on his head we might be going somewhere! Get him in on loan.
nicko Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Quite interesting that the team played 4-4-2 again today...this could be the pattern for the season...and it also explains why Di Santo is being brought in. On today's evidence Di Santo will start.

If he starts the season in as disinterested a fashion as today, we should send him to Siberia!
PAFELL Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Samba is a big unit and a very good player...in defence and occasionally attack. Agreed Samba is a very good player. Would poggy be the target man Sam wants or a Derbyshire replacement
nicko Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Would poggy be the target man Sam wants or a Derbyshire replacement Definitely target man material.
my_name_is_Earl Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I quite like Pogrebnyak. I've only seen him roughly ten times or so over the past two seasons with Zenit and i've seen him less so with the national side but I do think he may be well suited to our system. Depending on the fee and wages, the transfer looks good to me. When will you relay details of the fee Nicko?
nicko Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 When will you relay details of the fee Nicko? I will be describing it as a 'bargain fee' but that was when I first heard this morning...I heard something different about an hour or so ago. Hopefully the trip this weekend will establish that once and for all.
RoverRich Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Nicko, do you know if Sam still intends to watch someone tomorrow? If he is, I presume you are keeping that name quiet for now?

Jason Rover Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 pleasantly surprised to hear that 442 looks like the starting formation for the season. bit gutted with the way the search for a striker has gone it seems like its been a hard slog but at least it shows we arent going to throw money around for the sake of it. hopefully we can grab this russian? polish? guy at a decent price and see how things go
nicko Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Nicko, do you know if Sam still intends to watch someone tomorrow? If he is, I presume you are keeping that name quiet for now? It could be he is just stopping over to close this one...if he saw enough and heard enough about the price today. This is a fairly lively one right now.

It will be interesting to see what the national and local press have to say about it once they get wind after reading it on here....
nicko Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Is the Di Santo deal on?? I believe so, but until he arrives there is always the capacity for a late disappointment...he is due back on Monday and the idea is to have him up to Ewood very soon after. The fact Shevchenko came on ahead of him last night suggests the kid is seen as surplus for this season. I hope so, the more you think about it the better this deal becomes. Cheers. It will be interesting to see what the national and local press have to say about it once they get wind after reading it on here.... I'm pretty hopeful that the People will be the only ones with something resembling the whole story.
