RoverRich Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Thanks for the info as usual Nicko, much appreciated. Looks like the end of this long search could be approaching at last. Just hope Pogrebnyak is the right man for us now but if Sam thinks so then that is good enough for me. Pogrebnyak and Di Santo would make things begin to look a bit healthier for us. Just need that creative midfielder next...
my_name_is_Earl Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 Can somebody tell me why Pompey are trying to sign loads of cheap players when they have a billionaire owner? I've not been following that one closely enough..
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 A strike force of Pogrebnyak, Di Santo, Benni, Roberts and Gally? i would be pretty happy with that. I'd be even more happy if there was some money left over to bring in a central midfielder as well, that would be a real bonus.
blue and whites Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 if we get poggy on the cheap or a bargain deal, and di santo on loan, then great! then surely there have to be some money left for a decent midfielder! robinson jacobsen samba givet warnock diouf/hoilett dunn good-midfielder hoilett/van heerden poggy di santo/fit mccarthy looks like quite a decent team!

Not a bad team selection apart from Van Heerden/Hoillet for Pedersen. Pedersens experience of the league and his dead ball and heading ability make him a dead cert next season. The only reason so many fans get on his back is because when he moves out of form, as all players do at some stage, the manager has had nobody better to turn to so Peds is left in the team even when he looks completely out of sorts, therefore making him an easy target for the idiots among us.
Backroom Tom Posted July 25, 2009 Backroom Posted July 25, 2009 If we can get poggy on the cheap I'd love sam to turn his attentions to a big money midfielder, we could have a good team all round then.
awhom111 Posted July 25, 2009 Posted July 25, 2009 I believe so, but until he arrives there is always the capacity for a late disappointment...he is due back on Monday and the idea is to have him up to Ewood very soon after. The fact Shevchenko came on ahead of him last night suggests the kid is seen as surplus for this season. I hope so, the more you think about it the better this deal becomes. I'm pretty hopeful that the People will be the only ones with something resembling the whole story. I think Ancelotti is just trying to get a good look at all of his strikers to figure out who he wants to keep. He has played two strikers in all of his preseason games so far and subbed liberally. Right now it would look like Drogba, Anelka, Kalou, and Sturridge are going to be there and then he needs to choose between Shevchenko, Pizarro, and DiSanto. Pizarro has not shown up in the minutes that he has gotten. DiSanto has been excellent in creating chances for himself in his appearances. Shevchenko has looked slightly more lively than the past few years. I think it will all come down to whether or not other teams want him or Pizarro, since he already knows that we would take and play DiSanto.
brfc_jonesy Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 people talk about a decent midfielder and i dont know if his name has been banded about on here, but what about miguel veloso? what ive seen of him he aint a bad old sort, get rid of someone like reid who spends most of his time in the bloody house on crutches
jny Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Veloso is overrated and would probably cost in excess of £10m. Hoilett looked a good passer today (from the short while he played) but there was far too much space we could have done with Cana but we also need someone who can create chances. Practically all the balls we played were terrible until after Leeds scored.
andyroversmad Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 If we get Poggy will we have enough money left to buy Lucas Biglia
hi-jaq Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I dont think we need a defensive midfielder, Cana & Veloso fall under this category I think. If we get Pogrebnyak I will be delighted, especially if we get him cheap... I have always thought that Spurs bought the wrong Russian, he will do well in the prem, I'm sure of it!!! I reckon if there is around £5m left to spend on a midfielder I'd be looking at an attack minded player like Lucas Biglia or Arda Turan, possibly even Elano. I have no real idea on price, but I've heard Biglia could be in the right price bracket. We will see what happens but hopefully Pogrebnyak is going to be the first step in the right direction... EXCELLENT!!!
bigbrandjohn Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Looks like someone else is grateful for the information ; -) Pog, as he will now be known, for pronunciation and spelling sake if nothing else, fits the mould of a big target up front that Sam has been after all summer. It is believed that discussions are at an advanced stage with his club, Zenit St. Petersburg and the player. Unlike last time, it seems that the lad has had a change of heart and is now interested in coming. The rumoured fee is a knockdown £2 million as Pog's contract expires in November, the end of the Russian league season. Also, more should be known about the Di Santo deal very shortly. Chelsea's squad is due back on Monday and it is anticipated to have Di Santo up to Ewood shortly after. In last night's friendly, Andrei Shevchenko came on ahead of him surely suggests that Di Santo is seen as surplus for this season at Stamford Bridge. This, of course, is still with the potential of Ancelotti pulling the plug on the deal. So, fellow VBers, whats the feeling on a Pavel Pogrebnyak / Franco Di Santo strike partnership next season? Another Bom Exclusive!
texasrover Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 good news about pogrebnyak. and even better that he will hopefully be quite cheap. The Rothen front has gone quiet for quite some time now, probably because the main target became the striker. Hopefully it's not dead, as he is a fantastic passer of the ball and would be a great replacement for tugay.
Taggart Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 if we get poggy on the cheap or a bargain deal, and di santo on loan, then great! then surely there have to be some money left for a decent midfielder! robinson jacobsen samba givet warnock diouf/hoilett dunn good-midfielder hoilett/van heerden poggy di santo/fit mccarthy looks like quite a decent team! Eh............what`s wrong with our captain ? there is no way he isn`t going to play the Admiral in the centre of defence. Can anyone post some stats or info on Poggy btw as with some of the other players I don`t know too much about him other than he didn`t want to come to us last time round. How far are negotiations, if they have started already, and is there a proposed fee ? Would be fantastic if we get a good deal, and money to bring in a top notch centre midfielder, or top drawer right back / right wing I believe so, but until he arrives there is always the capacity for a late disappointment...he is due back on Monday and the idea is to have him up to Ewood very soon after. The fact Shevchenko came on ahead of him last night suggests the kid is seen as surplus for this season. I hope so, the more you think about it the better this deal becomes. Hey Nicko - thanks for the updates again, much appreciated and posters seem to be uplifted by some positive news :-)
47er Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Nicko-------or anyone else---------I haven't heard a word about a possible destination for Bentley ever since the end of the season. Its not possible he could stay at Spurs because Harry Houdini clearly doesn't want him so where is he going to end up? I would love him back at Ewood and, if the fee for Pog is 2M, that is financially viable. However I recognise its unlikely. Can't believe no-one wants him.

Brfcrule1 Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Hi all, yeah sounds positive also seems as though if Pog comes in the kit people will be very busy trying to get the name on the back of the shirt probably a lot harder than zurab!

HemelRover Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Nickos article in the People http://www.people.co.uk/sport/football/tm_...-name_page.html
rovers1993 Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 The player has shown he regards himself as good enough to play for one of the big English clubs when he told the Russian press, “I was puzzled when Zenit general director Maksim Mitrofanov said he was going to talk me into accepting Blackburn’s offer in the winter transfer window. “I could only laugh at it. Yes, I dream of playing in England - but I’m not interested in Blackburn who are struggling against relegation.” this is what he said during jan/feb... this is the only thing im worried about. will his heart be in it? or is he plainly going to come here and use us as a stepping stone. before anyone goes off, yes i know that nearly everyone that comes here uses us as a stepping stone but to say it like this really bothers me.
alexanders Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 We were struggling against relegation. If we get POG @ 2m, what about Tuncay as attacking midfielder?
Bobby G Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Ill be delighted with Pog. Brilliant player. I still reckon even with him and Di Santo we lack pace up front.
