Bloody hell have you gone back 20 years?

I know his contracts up in November but you cant buy a untested youngster for 1M never mind a proven International goalscorer!

That would be what they pay to Zenit, he will be worthless to them soon. There will be a pile of dosh into his pocket though ;)

He's an internation striker for Russia who had a terrific EURO 08 last summer. He was even first choice before he got injured ahead of Pavlyuchenko. Anything below £5 million is a steal for this guy, even if his contract does run out in November.

Do you mean UEFA Cup... He never played in the European Championships for Russia, not a kick!!!

If he did, he would have been at a 'BIG' club by now & way out of our price range... like I said before, Spurs signed the wrong Russian, they should have gone for Pogrebnyak... he is quality. ;)

I hope we get Pogrebnyak, don't get me wrong, but will he not be knackered because he has just played a season in Russia and then a season in England with no break.

Arshavin didn't do too badly last season, I can't see it being too much of a problem.

But Pavlyuchenko wasn't exactly the behemoth Tottingham expected was he. Poggy is a proven striker in what is now one of europe's best leagues if we get him (or someone of his pedigree) we would be lucky to pay less than £7m.

Anything under 5m would still make it a worthwhile deal. We should be able to push the price down by reminding Zenit that they can either take the cash now or we'll have him free at the end of his contract.

Ideally around the 2-3m mark will get the man.

Would mean we could address the midfield problem then

Its a possibility, but i'm sure Sam will be able to handle it.

On his price as long as the fee isn't something like £8 million plus i'd pay it, we are coming to the point where we need to bring someone in and fast. Giving the new striker some time with his team-mates and the coaching staff should help with his transition into a different league, off the field cultural differences etc.

Bojan just scored a lovely goal in the Wembley Cup, would love him here on loan.

I don't care that Pogrebnyak's contract runs out in 4 months. Sam pay what you have to and get him in, but just don't go higher than say £7-8 million. If we wait till November, a bigger club will get him for free, we won't stand a chance.

I could see it being an issue, but quite frankly the signing itself would uplift the entire club so even if he needs a break at some point during the season it's worth doing. When I've seen the guy play he's looked quality - for mine he'd be another 'rental' type player, one that would prove himself with Rovers and quickly be moved on for a bigger fee, which is the market we have to operate in these days.

We'd have to ship someone out first though, that could be more difficult that actually signing someone. I can't see anyone taking Reid, Dunn or Grella due to their injury records and Andrews has just signed a new deal.

Ideally, but if we sign Pogrebnyak (£3-5m) and Di Santo (loan) I have a feeling the budget will conveniently disappear for reinforcements. Also, we have Dunn, Reid, Grella, Andrews, Emerton, and N'Zoni to compete in midfield. Will the board really sanction more wages for that position?

How can Zenit play hard-ball when he was four months left on his contract?

Where has this 4 months suddenly sprung from? When this deal was first mentioned as a goer the period remaining on his contract was being quoted as 3 months. Now it's November when he's out of contract, but even that is only 3 months and a few days off.

I have a nasty feeling that could happen too. Hope not because the midfield needs a major overhaul...

Me too. I suspect that to get him in at all we will have to negotiate very hard with Zenit, then having cracked that one, we have to give the player a massive signing on fee and our highest ever wages to a player. Which taken altogether won't leave very much in Sam's budget for other things.

I think we will all know more on that today...it will come down to the price...if Rovers can 'nick' him for a low fee then it could happen.

However I am hearing horror stories about what the Russians want. If that is so then this trip may have been a waste of time.

Doesn't mean that we can't get him in November though does it?

The player's wages shouldn't effect the budget, especially when he's replacing Santa Cruz - who himself wasn't on peanuts.

Santa Cruz leaves for approx £17m, Derbyshire for £3m, and we're gonna lose most of that signing Pogrebnyak?

Someone said before that he wouldnt be allowed to play until the January transfer window although he's out of contract.

I didnt know that was the case to be fair.

So if a club signs him in November when his contract has expired then they can't play him until January. If someone buys him now whilst he is in contract he can play straight away.

He currently isn't a free transfer.

I meant Russia had a terrific EURO, not Pogrebnyak himself as he tore his meniscus against Serbia just days prior to the tournament.

We wouldn't be able to bring him in until January because the end of Pog's contract is past the date for free transfers to english teams.

That's not why. Even if it was before that deadline he wouldn't be allowed to sign after the end of August.

A player can't leave one club for another outside of the transfer window, it doesn't matter what the circumstances are regarding contracts. He'd have to have his Zenit contract cancelled before the end of August to be able to move to a club outside of the transfer window.

It's a pretty easy rule tbh, I'm not sure why it causes so much confusion.
