Does this happen every year? The anxiety about who is coming in during the transfer window is contagious.

Pog would be an excellent choice. But if the Russians play hardball, I'm confident that Sam has other options.

Well if nobody is going to ask, then i will. Nicko will there be an 11'o clocker? Lol. Just joking mods. Im not happy with Poggy, as desperate as we are for a striker, he is somebody i dont want. He disrespected our club by thinking we are not good enough for him. Tuncay, and heck id even take Mido over him. Il be waiting on the abuse for this post

I don't think we're quite in the position to cut our nose to spite our face.

That said, a strike force of Mido, Di Santo, McCarthy and Roberts isn't half-bad. The only problem is, would the money be invested elsewhere? As I posted earlier, it doesn't look likely with the numbers we already have in midfield. And can you see Sam offloading anyone any time soon?

I understand Toppers, that we cant be too picky if Poggy is available. However, because no other epl team it seems are interested, he might have a change of heart? For me Mido would be a better bet, despite his attitude. If we could get Mido for 2mill and Di Santo on loan, then we have money to burn on 1 or 2 quality creative midfielders. Our midfield are much more important.

Where's all this support for Mido come from?

He hasn't done anything for years and has never been prolific!

And as for taking Mido over Poggy? You can't be serious!

If you were a player, would you really sign for a club in serious danger of relegation, which we were??

Preferably Pogrebnyak, but Mido isn't a bad option. He's only 26, and with the right manager behind him he would be a useful player for only £2m.

I can't see Boro wanting too much for Mido. Blimey I bet they want him off their hands. I wouldn't be too enthusiastic about having him but he could turn out to be an astute signing on the cheap.

When he can be bothered he's a very good player (the key issue being that he only seems to be bothered for 2 months of every year). Sam has a reputation for getting the best out of difficult players, Anelka and Diouf spring immediately to mind, otherwise I wouldn't even suggest it. However, since he does and the striker market is getting somewhat silly in terms of prices, this might not be a bad option, especially if he was signed as the 3rd/4th choice striker.

Our midfield are much more important. [sic]

As much as I agree, I think it's fairly clear that Allardyce doesn't think the midfield is a priority. We've got a huge number of bodies for our midfield: Dunn, Grella, Reid, Diouf, Andrews (ugh), Warnock, Emerton, Pederson, Judge, Doran, Gallagher, Olsson. And this summer we've brought in Van Heerden and N'zonzi, as well as the returning Hoilett. If we were to sign anyone else (and we desperately need a playmaker), I expect we would have to ship someone out first. (Looking at that list of names, we really are outrageously weak in the middle of the park.)

I don't need to reiterate that I think Pogrebnyak would be a fantastic signing, however I think he'll cost at least £5m, even with his contract up in November. I can't see how anyone would have reservations about the guy, he's performed exceptionally well in European and international competition.

I've even read some people claiming they're not impressed with Arshavin! Unbelieveable.

Mido would be an absolute horror signing. How many more chances should the guy be allowed?

Got that very right... unbelievable!!!

Arshavin is unbelievably good... And with the right service Pogrebnyak will be a big player for us, having said that though, I was always under the impression that from the games I have seen him in, he is strong enough to hold off defenders & create his own chances!!!

The midfield issue is a tough one. On one hand I think we've got so many players that can play there that there MUST be a successful (and hopefully fit) combination in amongst all of them. On the other hand looking at the individual players it looks horribly devoid of creativity and I think it must be our next priority after a striker.

However, regardless of the midfield, we cannot go into the season with only 3 players whose natural position is striker, especially when one is at championship level.
