I particularly liked this paragraph:

Spurs also want Warnock with manager Harry Redknapp unconvinced by Gareth Bale, who has attracted enquiries from Ajax, AC Milan and Roma.

So Milan, Ajax and Roma thinks Bale is good enough, but Spurs dont? Hahahaha, joke of a club that.

Those Ancelotti quotes could be taken either way, though - either Carlo wants to keep him, or Carlo is talking him up to reassure the player he's coming back.

The Sun also reckons Bent to Sunderland is on for today, so the chain reaction of moves should have started.

Well Crouch to Spurs have already started it. Bent looks likely to be on his way, and Kenwyn Jones could then also be on the move. I have a feeling that Bruce will play Bent and Jones, if Bent signs

Di Santo has spoken of his delight at his pre-season on Chelsea's official website.

On a side-note, if we even entertain a bid from Villa for Warnock, I would be very very disappointed. We have sold enough, raised enough cash that wont even be fully spent in all likelihood, so weakening our squad would be a mistake.

And are you at all surprised at that Bobby?

Sam has recently said that following the Santa Cruz and Derbs sales that he has no need to sell. The only reason he will sell now is if he believes he can strengthen the team.

Therefore, should Warnock go, Sam must have somebody else in first. We actually have some good options in defence - particularly if Olssen is starting to come good. All thought a good reason to keep him is his flexibility to play in midfield too.

If we could, and it's a big 'if', add the money to our existing pot to break the bank for the right person then it may be worth doing - but for much more than £6M in today's market.

That said, we cannot afford to do what we did with Duff, Bentley and Roque and sell before we have someone else in.

People should not even dare dream that Olsson is of the required quality to slot into left back if Warnock leaves. I still see Warnock as our best left back and Givet as a center back starter.

A good few minutes cameo on the wing by the Swede does not hide the defensive frailties he showed last season or the season before.

I agree with you Bobby. Warnock as left back, but I would also like to see Olsson really challenging Gamst for his left wing spot. Gamst has been dire and based on Olsson's performance against Leeds this Saturday, both he and Van Heerden had a lot more to offer than the Norwegian.

Unbelievable, it looks like Sam has gone to the considerable trouble and expense of travelling over to Russia without knowing what the Russians wanted for Pog.

What a waste of time and money seemingly.

As for the fee, the ONLY question to be considered is, is he good enough to warrant a 9m fee?

If he is, and is better than the other alternatives, then we need to look at it seriously. It's completely irrelevant that he is out of contract soon, if we sign him he won't be shortly out of contract then and we will have a valuable and hopefully appreciating asset. We can't afford to wait until January by which time we could be adrift at the bottom of the table and we would probably be priced out by other clubs who could pay much higher wages.

Next question, is he really that good or are we ONLY looking at him because of the contract situation and trying to get him on the cheap?

A few hundred quid v an investment of millions??? One cannot make an omelette without breaking a few eggs rem.

As for chucking the opening asking price at ZSP as if we were owned by some arab with a death wish! :o That would be bad business in the extreme. We don't have the money to throw around like that any more Simon. On the usual 4 year deal that could open us up to the possibility of blowing 50k per week even BEFORE his wages are taken into account!!! :o Can you see our board going along with that? They have far too much nous to let that happen I'm sure.

We are a stand alone business nowadays it seems and we need to view any outgoings as an investment which will yield a good return over the next few years. Unles this fella is a 'biggy' that won'y happen and reem no one else appears to be in strongly for him. If we want him we need to be dealing with his agent over a signing on fee commesurate with him being outr of contract in Nov and NOT paying ZSP through the nose.

Rem though... 'Live by the sword... die by the sword' if we do the sensible thing as above and effectively diddle ZSP then we have to expect to be similarly diddled when he leaves. Either by the same method or by some sort of release clause which I have noticed appears to be hated on here.

Try to see the issue from ZSP's perspective as well as ours and there will be the solution. They might blow hard about 9m but they know they wont get that and they know the clocks ticking and that by Nov they will get sod all. AN says they are awful to deal with and I'd not argue there but we have to place our own value on this bloke and not use theirs!

Anyway flip the coin over ... have you seen this bloke play? I have'nt and 2 days ago I'd never even heard of him. I'll just trust SA and the board to do the best for the club over this.

He has looked shaky, but playing/learning under a decent manager could see Olsson becoming suitable back-up.

Di Santo d-day is it? Comments from player/manager don't look too encouraging.....

Generally, I think it is important not to panic. Ideally you want players in asap however the way the market is, that is not possible.

We struggling to find a striker, and if we let Warnock go then we might struggle during the course of the season. Shouldnt we let the rubbish leave, instead of the quality? We always tend to kick ourselves in the back of the head during transfer time.

He also set up the second goal for Malouda.

Chelsea paid around 5m I believe.

He could well know be in the price bracket of the strikers we are looking at now, 5-10m.

nicko said, there is no way Chelsea would sell, they see him as there future striker, sooner than later if he keeps banging the goals in.

You don't know if you don't ask, No would be the answer on current form.

Correct different managers have different viewpoints.

Agree Gord. I think Sam will have told ZSP that Poggs contract is nearly up, and either you take eg 2mill now, or you get nothing in November. ZSP knows this, and Sam knows it so will probably go back again

i agree with you here, however I see Givet as our left back rather than centre back, as there is nothing wrong with Samba and Nelson in the middle.

On Olsson, I watched him quite a lot last season on the reserver matches and he played left midfield quite often, and defintelky looks better going forward than when he tries to defend against Aaron Lennon :-)

I think he can challenge Pederson for that slot, an dI would think of playing Warny on the left centre of midfield.

nicko ! any more news mate?

Nothing happens overnight FFS.What stood at 11pm last night probably still goes believe it or not. Every story you've read this morning in the papers was written before your last Nicko fix.

Except if we have been dealing with American or Asian players! <_<

8.54 Croatian star Nikola Kalinic says he is looking forward to joining Portsmouth, with the £6million-rated Hajduk Split striker set to fill the void created by Peter Crouch's sale to Tottenham.

We not Interested?

Having seen the price that Johnson went for & the fact that it is so hard to find a decent full back I think we should be looking for at least 15 million for Warnock.

I dont want to lose him but he is one of the top 5 premier league left backs, this is VERY hard to come by & we should be compensated properly if we were to consider selling!!

Lancashire Telegraph reports that Rovers are bracing themselves for a bid from Villa for Warnock. Meanwhile, Sam's interest in Proggy has cooled, Rovers are confident a deal could be struck should they wish to persue it but at the moment they have a number of irons in the fire. Telegraph also reports that Di Santo is expected to arrive on loan very soon.

Sounds to me like we have other options or we are playing hardball - I trust JW so im happy with that.

As for Warnock - We cant stop other clubs being interested. Realistically, if they want him then they can give us £10m + Shorey as a backup. (Johnson is an england full back and went for £18m so that price seems fair to me)

I actually miss the old days of just hearing about signings when they happen, Nicko hasn't had any good news for us for months, and all the signings we actually made went under his radar, i'm hoping it's the same for top striker. No offence Nicko

Eh? Di Santo obviously went way over your head...and so did Givet...or Hoilett getting his permit.

Apologies for never having heard of N'Zonzi and van Heerden.

Ffs.

Nothing on Kalinic "the next Davor Suker" Nicko or Milan Jovanovic also rumoured to be on the way to Premier League?

Strikers who have been linked away from their club:

Marko Pantelic, Pavel Pogrebnyak, Milan Jovanovic, Kalinic, Alvaro Negredo, Jan Klas Huntelaar, Chamakh, Rèmy, Bent, Dani Guiza, Marcus Berg, Aruna Dindane, Luis Fabiano, Fred, Oscar Cardozo, Vagner Love, Andre Pierre Gignac, Kenwyne Jones, Kevin Davies, Ba, Dzeko, Marc Janko, Mohamed Zidan and Pizarro.

With money to spend - Surely there are a suitable striker for us!

Portsmouth close to doing it if the bank has left them with any money. Foreign deals are easier because you can pay on the drip.

One or two other clubs sniffing but Pompey think he is coming later in the week.
