We definitely have space for both Warnock and Givet. Warnock can play in three positions (LB, CM, LM), Givet in two (LB, CB. Someone said he played RB for a while earlier in his career as well) so we have flexibility. There will be injuries and suspensions; Warnock, Samba and Nelsen do get their fair share of cards. Assuming Jacobsen turns out well (Injuries would be the only reason he wouldn't) we'll then be in a situation where any three from Warnock, Nelsen, Samba and Emerton could get injured, and we'd still have a good defense.

Also lets us rotate a bit if the schedule is hectic. Defense is the part of our squad where the vision of a small but good squad has been realised, with no dead weight but instead seven players all good enough to start. Some better than others, but none that aren't mid-table Premiersihp class or better.

Nocko's quote.

Di Santo's name wasn't on the list I was asked about.

Today is D-Day with Di Santo...not sure when today...it is fraying my nerves too.

Just had a feeling all along about Di Santo, hope it happens but Italian manager/Italian striker, manager getting to grips with lingo, add in Italian style of play and Di Santo sounds like would be a handy guy to have around - even on the bench.

Deal sounded pre- Ancelloti and I think Chelsea only have 2 out and out centre forwards in Anelka and Drogba and personality wise they are flaky at best (is this Anelka's longest stay at a club?? Will Drogba like Ancelloti enough to make an effort?? ;).

I can see a tough deal for Rovers with an instant recall clause (if that's still allowed) and Chelsea have a lot of games coming up.

Not holdng my breath but hope I'm wrong. And will he swop Kensington for Bank Top!!!

In another way I'm not as we get a season at most out of him and we have to start again. Perhaps better to develop someone we could make a profit on.

Yeah, I agree here. Our defence is actually very strong going into the new season. With Emerton fit and with Allardyce at the helm, as opposed to Ince, I believe that is possibly the strongest defence in the league currently, outside of the top five. It had better be anyway, because with our shoddy midfield and thread-bare attack, we're gonna need it!

Di Santo is Argentinian

According to the Spanish press, we are closing on the signing of Algerian Spanish based striker Kamel Ghilas (25 yrs old). We have agreed a 2.2 million Euro fee with Celta Vigo and he flew in last night for a medical this morning. He will be signing a 4 year deal at the club.

That one has snook under the radar if it's true.

Never heard of him before but his CV looks decent on Wikipedia. It has his position down on there as 'second striker' and he's only 5'9, so he's obviously not Roque's replacement. If it's true then that has to be the end of Benni, surely?

Here's a promising story related to him: Arsenal chase Ghilas.

Or that he's:

i) our major summer signing or ii) Di Santo is not coming.

I disagree. What if Givet get injured? We're then back to Olsson being exposed as the average player he is. Besides, Warnock was great last season and very rare did we have a situation with all defenders available. If that was the case, Ooijer wouldn't have playe as many games as he did. Can't sell any more of our best players.

It's all fine in principle but keeping players happy is not as easy.

Givet played at CB last season only when Samba was deployed up front allowing Warnock back in his preferred position.

When Samba was in the back four Warnock played in MF because of the injuries to Dunne etc.

RB Jackobsen...Emerton...Andrews

CB Samba...Nelson...Givet...Kishi...Gunning

LB Warnock...Givet...Olsson...Gunning

Leaving Gunning out of the equation RB is covered, CB is well covered, LB is OK as we stand I agree but how do you accommodate Givet and Warnock.

Please tell me, as I have said I can't see Samba or Nelson being benched, benching Givet for Warnock, then you ask why did we spend 3.5 m on him.

Putting Warnock in MF last season was a stop gap. (injuries)

With players in demand (rumoured) Warnock and Samba they are not going to settle for squad positions, so are we now saying that Nelson will be dropped to accommodate the pair of them.

As a poster above said a five man defence with the full backs in a slightly advanced position would keep them happy but Sam will not go that way I'm sure.

We'd be better served selling putting Warnock at LB, moving Givet in with Samba and selling Nelsen...

The only way i can see warnock and givet in the same team is playing 5 at the back,

Warnock--------------------------Emerton

-----Givet-------Samba----Nelsen-------

a solid base, we just need our target man now!!

Good shout... I wouldn't mind seeing us play with wing backs like that... Emerton was playing that position when he was at Feyenoord, just before we signed him, and I think Warnock would relish that position... We would need 3 good midfielders & 2 up top to make it work, but I think it could.

-------Di Santo-----Pogrebnyak

------Nzonzi---Grella---Dunn

Warnock--------------------Emerton

------Givet---Nelsen---Samba

-------------Robinson

Bench... Pedersen/Olssen, Van Heerden/Hoilett, Diouf/Reid, Mccarthy/Roberts, Kizanishvilli, Bunn.

2 new strikers up top, because I dont really rate the ones we have, unless Mccarthy gets fit, then I'd start him every game, as long as his head is in it!!!

We'd better not sell Stevie... He's arguably our best player... Unless he asks to leave, we dont want to be letting anyone have him!!!

But Warnock can do an EXCELLENT job in CM/CDM. His energy and running basically makes him a more talented Savage with crapper hair!!

What??? Crapper hair than Robbie??? As in Robbie had GOOD hair???

(Excuse the multiple question marks, but one didn't properly reflect my shock and surprise!)

But then we'd have to buy another good central defender! It's just completely unnecessary upheaval. We've got a very solid defence as things stand, with good cover in each position. The only one I'd consider selling is Zurab, the rest are all vital to our success next season.

Edit: Not a fan at all of this 5-3-2 stuff either. There is a very good reason not a single Premier League team play that formation - it has too many flaws. Sam has never played it in his career so he's not going to start now.

We all know how badly Spanish translates to English from all those badly interpreted Santa Cruz's statements to Paraguayan media, so maybe Kamel is going to Blackpool for vacation or something.

Aren't Celta in the second division?

D'oh

Basically the same as the previous link - it says in the article that it's taken from the spanish reports.

Says he is about to sign for us for a fee of over €2m as we're the only club to meet their valuation. He boarded a flight to England yesterday afternoon to have his medical and finalise a 4 year deal.

Tenerife and various other British clubs including Pompey where interested, however it was Rovers who put the best offer on the table.

He will be paired up front with SA striker Benni McDonalds :)
