Bobby G Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Have a feeling Di Santo wont go through...Not a doomsday-sayer but I see far more reasons why it wont go through especially if nicko's deadline is accurate. All in all, we have to find at least two strikers in the next few days and the odds on those are pretty long and with time passing increases the chance of desperation in last minute moves.

budha Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Well we can certainly afford two of them, the only doubt would be Vagner Love. He's probably on high wages, which would be a stumbling block, but I'd guess that he is affordable. The latest I've read is that Real's asking for €20M for Negredo, which would be out of our reach. Obviously it comes down to what the interested parties are willing to pay, but if we have the quoted £13M, I wouldn't call it certain that we can afford him.
Taggart Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 No idea if they are reliable as this is the first thing he's ever told me. But he does know Nicko and is mates with someone involved in the "proceedings" Of course he could be pulling my leg... Let`s hope he is on the money, would be a big relief to everyone if we secure his loan signing ! and of course, you have a new relieable source and we get more snippets of info
tcj_jones Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 After these links to not-so-big-name strikers, I think we can forget Di Santo. As the least prominent of two additions to our strike force, I think Benjani would be a great signing. We'd probably be able to get him on a loan with a view to buy - much like Jo to Everton - or, otherwise, on a very small fee considering his age. Wages may be quite high, but I don't think it would be a stumbling block. Considering the fact that our main striking option is looking like a last minute deal on the eve of the transfer window closing, this would guarantee us three established Premier League strikers up front until January, should things go tits up. I'm very much in favour of Benjani as a potential signing.
67splitscreen Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Could it not be that Sam is waiting on the Di Santo situation to be finalized before making his move. I would say it has a big impact on the type of striker we sign.

I'm very much for Benjani as a potential signing. Whilst i agree there needs to be someone brought and soon, Benjani is not the answer. For one thing he has never been a prolific scorer, he had that purple patch at Pompey but that's about it. Second he will be 31 years old, we should be looking to lowering the age of our strikeforce plus there is no resale value. And thirdly his knees are shot, the medical City carried out "found a potential problem with his knees".
tcj_jones Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Ah, I wasn't aware of an on-going problem with his knees. I know he got one injury at City, but didn't think it was overly bad. I don't suppose anybody else could shed any light on his injury record over the past two seasons?
Bennisfromheaven Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Sunderland will give Bent a medical tomorrow, fee agreed!! .....Just heard on the radio!!
Steve Moss Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Here's a new one: Kamel Ghilas (Celta Vigo) is linked with us according to this site (Portmouth fan site). Wiki has it as a 1.7 million fee. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamel_Ghilas

den Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 tcj - Benjani is poor. Ask any Man City fan, he's just not up to it.
Fraserkirky Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 So we have our derbyshire replacement in the form of Kamel Ghilas, sounds very promising. Think if we can get Di Santo for a year then were all done with strikers, hopefully we can pick up Poggy in January for free as well. Sams a shrewd man
LeChuck Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Am I the only one who is getting irrationally excited about Ghilas? I've just got a very good feeling about this one. We don't really have a player like him, it's unbelievably cheap as well when you consider how much good Championship players cost.
bennyboyt11 Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Haven't signed him yet guys, let's calm it down!

I share your excitement!! if we can bag him and di santo, id be happy for now
American Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 All of you wresting fans just think of the headline when he scores a game winner: Kamel Clutch!

Sams a shrewd man There's no doubting Di Santo's potential, but you'd be happy with just those two (Di Santo and Ghilas) going into August as replacements for men who we have pocketed around £18 million for?

Bang on the money. For all Sam's talk of when he took Anelka to Bolton and the likes of RVN being linked has built expectations. However, if we did only bring in these two then i'd be satified (not pleased) if the bulk of our budget was then spent on a creative, goal scoring midfielder. I simply cannot believe this will happen though. Sam must know that the key to doing well in this league is taking your chances. A productive forward line is absolutely key for us this year.
John Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Could be imminent offers: Benjani, Bojinov & Elano Heading For Manchester City Exit Door
Fife Rover Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Whilst on a transatlantic flight? It's possible! There's different ways of scoring.

Bennisfromheaven Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Internet heard it circa 5 hours ago. Sorry, was in a meeting all morning!! ......with colleagues from Helsinki, Ironically!!
Ronin Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Looking at the goal reel, Ghilas certainly knows where the goal is, and could be a very handy player, if his Wiki page is anything to go by - another versatile player brought in by Sam? Kamel Fathi Ghilas (born March 9, 1984 in Marseille, France) is an Algerian footballer who currently plays for Celta de Vigo in the Spanish second division, in various attacking positions.
Billy Castell Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 All of you wresting fans just think of the headline when he scores a game winner: Kamel Clutch! Or if he breaks his foot: Kamel Toe. Where has Huntlaar gone to if he hasn't moved to Stutgart? This Ghilas sounds a bit like Luis Garcia of Liverpool fame. £2m or so sounds a good deal.
