Kelbo Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 According to the Spanish press, we are closing on the signing of Algerian Spanish based striker Kamel Ghilas (25 yrs old). We have agreed a 2.2 million Euro fee with Celta Vigo and he flew in last night for a medical this morning. He will be signing a 4 year deal at the club. http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=e...26rlz%3D1I7DKUK Just remember, you heard it here first!! 1/0
RibbleValleyRover Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 if now is not a buyers market i would settle for those two for the time being. money does not have to be spent if it doesn't need to be, that would be stupid. bringing these two players in would be ideal (if they perform), but probably nothing more than that, but it will still be a better attack than last season. keep the money unless we have to spend (which we don't have to looking at things if he can get bargains). if he see's someone he can sign do it but it is pointless just spending money for the sake of it Do you trust the owners/board to make all of the remaining money available in January? Could the chance have gone to seriously spend some money on the squad in areas that need it? We will have to wait and see, personally i think we should be spending the money on decent acquisitions whilst we still have it.
Fraserkirky Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Bang on the money. For all Sam's talk of when he took Anelka to Bolton and the likes of RVN being linked has built expectations. However, if we did only bring in these two then i'd be satified (not pleased) if the bulk of our budget was then spent on a creative, goal scoring midfielder. I simply cannot believe this will happen though. Sam must know that the key to doing well in this league is taking your chances. A productive forward line is absolutely key for us this year. I'd be satisfied with Di Santo,McCarthy,Roberts,Ghilas,Diouf and Gallacher. Little bit of everything there. Our midfield is ###### shocking, and some of the rest of the budget should be spent a an attacking midfielder who can strike a ball, and is healthy. I think we all agree on that. I disagree the key for us next year is having a fit and combatitive midfield that can create chances for our strikers.

bobsterbrfc Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Haven't been on much today, but in regards to the Crouch - Bent....maybe Jones merry-go-round....might we see a move for Kenwyne now?

Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 If we end up with Di Santo, this Camel chap and K. Jones, I would be pleased. It'd be a stronger attack than the one we had 12 months ago, and we'd have plenty of versatility too. Jones. Di Santo. McCarthy. Roberts. Camel man. Gallagher. That'd actually be pretty encouraging.
LeChuck Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Haven't been on much today, but in regards to the Crouch - Bent....maybe Jones merry-go-round....might we see a move for Kenwyne now? I doubt it, Bent will just be a replacement for Cissé who is no longer there. They still really only have Jones, Bent and Campbell up front as Healy has gone and Murphy will probably follow. Chamakh would be the one that might enable us to move for Jones, but even then the Sunderland fan who posts on here reckons Bruce would keep hold of Jones and go with Chamakh, Bent, Jones and Campbell next season. If we end up with Di Santo, this Camel chap and K. Jones, I would be pleased. It'd be a stronger attack than the one we had 12 months ago, and we'd have plenty of versatility too. Jones. Di Santo. McCarthy. Roberts. Camel man. Gallagher. That'd actually be pretty encouraging. Far too many though, don't you think? I can't see how Benni will still be here at the end of August if we do sign Di Santo, Ghilas and a new target man.
patrickvalery Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I disagree the key for us next year is having a fit and combatitive midfield that can create chances for our strikers. I won't argue that we need new faces in the middle. But ask any top level manager and he'll say the same. A fit and firing strike force can be the difference from finishing in the bottom 3 and finishing mid table. The league gets tighter every year and a good striker is worth his weight in gold. I know you'll say its no good having a wealth of talent up front with nobody providing any service. But the fact is a decent striker can make and score chances out of next to nothing. Our midfield has been very poor, thats plain to see. Yes we need to replace Toogs. But we have to prioritise our money and the bulk of it needs to go on a striker. I'd sooner see us take a chance on a midfielder but buy a proven striker than the other way around.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I think we're more likely to sell Roberts than Benni Mac, even when his legs have gone he'll have finishing ability but when Jay Rob's legs go, he's screwed. I don't think it's too many, but I can see it being cut down for squad versatility reasons. Diouf could be in that list too.

den Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 and the argument goes on. We must be better off than last season with absolutely anyone signing on as our main striker, because RSC was injured most of the season.
braddock Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 and the argument goes on. We must be better off than last season with absolutely anyone signing on as our main striker, because RSC was injured most of the season. and not interested i don't understand why that isn't logical. he didn't play much and when he did, apart form occasional glimpses he didn't show anything. surely having two fit players in santo and camel is better than a crocked underperformer?
Tris Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Haven't been on much today, but in regards to the Crouch - Bent....maybe Jones merry-go-round....might we see a move for Kenwyne now? Not according to Jones himself ...
den Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 surely having two fit players in santo and camel is better than a crocked underperformer? Well yes - if you consider RSC a "crocked underperformer". In that scenario, anyone is better, which is what I've just said. I don't go along with any of that, because he was pure quality and we need to replace with the same, or else we are again weaker. Just as we are when we sell any of our better players, ie Bellamy, Duff, Bentley etc, etc.
blue/white Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Whilst on a transatlantic flight? Yes, it's quite possible Tris, you know those flights are 7 + hrs. and the flight attendants are terribly 'loose'-- especially w/ the young, handsome footballer types. All it takes is 5 minutes in the WC.
Fife Rover Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 About Baradji: "Burnley tried to offer him a contract, but he did instead sign for West Ham". Sounds like a nice guy, ditching Burnley Yes but he obviously likes the idea of playing in claret and blue.
Iceman Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 but when Jay Rob's legs go, he's screwed. Explain? Seems to me that even a fit Roberts, is screwed to something. Agree, i think Roberts might leave, as Benni is more capable in finding the back of the net. Gally will more than likely make a few sub appearences, so we not that strong up front
Guest TrueBlue2009 Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 now on his WIKI page "On 28 July 2009 a fee of £1.7m was agreed for Ghilas to transfer to former English Premier League winners Blackburn Rovers. The move was set to be completed pending on the player agreeing personal terms and passing a medical with Rovers." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamel_Ghilas

Agree, i think Roberts might leave, as Benni is more capable in finding the back of the net. Gally will more than likely make a few sub appearences, so we not that strong up front Robert's game is all about chasing defenders, using his turn of pace and charging through to create chances. When his legs have gone, he can't do that, and he doesn't have the finishing ability to make it as a goal poacher.
Torgeir Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 So we have our derbyshire replacement in the form of Kamel Ghilas, sounds very promising. Think if we can get Di Santo for a year then were all done with strikers, hopefully we can pick up Poggy in January for free as well. Sams a shrewd man Smells like a season where we'll struggle to me. Failing to replace our best player yet again and you don't seem to mind. Pogrebnyak won't come if we're in the bottom in January, remember. Ghilas is replacing a fringe player in Derbyshire who, let's not forget, was loaned out even though we were scraping down the bottom of the league. Doesn't take much to replace him... Di Santo might be a shrewd signing but if we're expecting him to lead our attacking line then we're piling way too much pressure on his young shoulders.

Roberts has never been more than a squad player for us, whereas Benni was one of the most important players for us, especially around the time Chelsea and Mourinho were sniffing around him. I just don't think Sam will be a fan of Benni's, he doesn't seem like the kind of striker he likes...even last season we had to stick Samba up alongside him before he was able to perform. Wages are my primary reason though, he'll be on far too much to be a backup player to the new guy and Di Santo.

Can someone confirm that today is the deadline for confirmation on whether Di Santo is expected at Ewood for the season?
