We need to sell a couple of players as we are now beginning to look heavy as a squad.

Wouldn't have said so - off the top of my head since the end of last season

Out: Vogel, Simpson, Vilenueva, Ooijer, Mokoena, Tugay, RSC, Derbyshire, Rigters, Treacy, Fielding (eleven out)

In: (before any new acquisitions) Givet, Jacobsen, Nzonzi, Van Heerden, (Four in) (was Hoillet with us already?)

Sam seems to be trimming the squad down quite a bit.

Rigters not gone yet. Fielding not gone yet.

Ghilas is joining us (and reasonable wages too- £15k per week if that article is correct) and it looks like Di Santo will be with us soon (presumably the club has the good sense to move his Mum and Dad north with him to some lovely cottage in the Ribble Valley).

Hoillet would have major work permit problems were he to move within the UK- like he wouldn't get one.

Of all the forwards mentioned, Cardoza for me is the stand-out star but I notice Unleaded does not even have him in the list of players we have been linked to. There is no doubt we need a player with 20 goals a year in him and Cardoza is the closest there is to someone we could be pretty certain would deliver week in week out. The rest will tend to drift in and out of goal scoring form unless Benny clicks again.

Incidentally, the Benny article in the LT to me read that Benny was looking for the right big main striker to play off ie 4-4-2 with himself as one of the 2.

I would imagine Sam will make a decision on Gally towards the end of the window but if we are still looking for a star centre forward, we will hopefully end up with star, Benny, Roberts, Di Santo, Gally, Ghilal, Hoillet as potential front men which looks a bit heavy.

Meantime, I suspect that Gally like Nzonzi will get plenty of first team playing time in the remaining friendlies- is the Dundee United trip still on?; that's gone quiet.

Benni stating we need another striker is like saying give my paycheck ill be happy to warm the bench, with the players coming in and the chance of another big name striker still to come i would expect another striker to leave , benni , robberts , di santo , hoillet, the camel, gally and one coming in that would be 7 too many for our squad.

Dunno who sam is intending to play where next season as we have a few versatale players, but im still worried about the centre mid spot , would have liked to see a decent signing in that area, nzoni may be good for the future, but im hoping for a cool head and good passer to try and help me forget the legend that was TUGAY !!.

I don't see why McCarthy would be happy to sit on the bench and not play when he has the World Cup to look forward to next year if he can stay in good form and picked for South Africa.

Potentially good news from nicko about Di Santo but of course he isn't here yet.

I'd be very disappointed albeit not in the least bit surprised though if having sold two strikers for 18m quid we only end up with a young lad on loan and a striker/cum midfielder from the depths of the Spanish second Division costing 2m Euros.

For some reason the Ghilas thing brings Grabbi to mind but hopefully that's grossly unfair on the lad.

Have to agree, Grabbi sprang to my mind when I read this. Only difference is that Ghilas has not cost £7 million.

Benni has it all to play for. If he is really serious about making the WC squad, then he will sort himself out. He knows this could be his last world cup, and hopefully he will prove his worth again.

Lancashire Telegraph reports that Ghilas has had medical and agreed personal terms. He will sign today for £1.7 million. Also if Di Santo arrives then Sam will be happy with striking options.

Personally, I shocked that RSC has been replaced by 2 unproven strikers. To me it looks like Rovers have gone for the cheap option if the telegraph report is correct and mo other strikers are bought.

Are you at all surprised by that Kamy? Still a while to go for the window to close, but i think Sam is getting a few strikers in, before making a big move. One of Gally, Roberts or Benni will be shipped out. With a WC to co come, and with something to prove i hope its not Benni. Why doesnt Sam just blow the budget on Cardozo and get it over with. If we dont bring in a top profile striker, then questions will have to be asked as to where the money has gone.

It is risky, but we still have the PL experience of Benni/Roberts. I would think with Di Santo coming in, he would be happy with the options for now.

The fact we are spending a fee on Ghilas, takes away the available money for any other signings obviously.

Are you serious John? 1.7mill is peanuts, and Ghilas has played alot of games in midfield. He is more a midfielder than striker. Again, if we dont replace Roque with an equally quality player, the questions will have to be asked.

What's going on - signing players - I do not believe it.

I wont believe it until Capt Kayos and Bob Flemming are arguing about their performances at Ewood

I did say he would be happy for now. Unless we were to sell, we would have plenty of numbers and also options up-front (Benni/Jase/Di Santo/Ghilas/Gally?).

Of course, we have not bought a 'proven' goal scorer, but likely to be a case of playing the waiting game. Sam said himself we might have to wait until the end of August to buy the striker he wants. It is the end of July, not August.

Personally, if we sign a "biggie" as Nicko put it, i could well see Benni or Jay moving on to another club before the window closes. All the comments about being top heavy if we sign another striker may be misplaced, due to the fact that we are unsure where the new guys are going to play, as in th ethe new Tugay look-a-like and Hoillett, and even Gally - none of them may be played upfront, but with that option available.

I`m not too bothered if we are top heavy incidentally, as long as we can carry a squad that size, then I`m sure Sam is aware and managing it - rather be top heavy than not have enough !

I would be shocked if we ended up with 1.7 million being spent on a striker, an unknown entity at best, to replace Santa Cruz.

We need a proven goal scorer.

Where will the money go if the LT article is true?

Nicko already stated that we are still trying to sign a "biggie" so from his past knowledge i think its fair to say we are still looking for that catch, and also that the Poggy aga still ahs some legs to run yet.

In essence, it would appear that the rSC replacment search is still ongoing ! stop panicking, there is still over a month to go and we have already been doing squad building.

Two thoughts on that LT report:

- Sam might have seen medical reports on one or more of Dunn, Reid and Emerton and is now seriously looking at big money being needed for midfield;

- and/or Sam has done a brilliant job at getting a workable solution for up front in Di santos, Benny, JR, Gally, Ghilas and Hoilett (even Samba) as options so he is keeping his wad back for when shifting players out becomes a greater priority for other clubs in late August when there might be "relative" bargains about. If Pog is worth £9m for three months now, he'll be worth £6m for two months to Zenit in August perhaps...

A question- is Di santos barred from playing against Chelsea?

This could be a brilliant move by Chelsea as Sam (apart from last season) has as good a record against Big 4 as any manager outside the Big 4. If Chelsea has given us a weapon who can turn defeats to draws and draws to wins against the Mancs, City, Liverpool and Arsenal, Chelsea are absolutely laughing in their title bid.

I choose a different angle on this. The way I see it, I don't think we would even be near relegation with the current squad and the new additions. We will finish 10-14 with todays squad, with not too much relegation pressure during the season.

BUT, and this is the but for me, what about the stars (great players) that we currently have in our team? These are players with ambition ! Read: Warnock, Samba, Givet, Nelsen, McCarthy to some degree.

WHY would these players bother to stay more than one season from today if no big signings are made, and no ambition is shown by the club? Warnock would be the first to go - Samba second........And frankly, I won't blame them.

Who'd be a manager eh....

If Di Santo arrives then together with Benni, Roberts Hoillet and this Camel chap we have plenty of options up front - this year. We clearly need to think about replacing both Roberts and Benni in the next 18 months however and they'll have little resale value, so where will the money come from if we don't buy a quality replacement (with resale value) now?

.......Perhaps Sam thinks he's going to get Poggy on a free for Jan.

Personally think that Obafemi Martins would be a superb replacement for Benni. Proven in the prem for a reported £6 million.

However, most people will admit that midfield is currently more of a worry than upfront. If we still have £10 million left I'd much rather we shipped out the crocks and tried to strengthen this area with some quality - not long shots like Nzoni and Van Heerden (as promising as they may be).

On the plus side, at leat we should have a bit of pace about us this year.

Don't take this as gospel, but I'm pretty sure that a rule was put in place that prevented players playing against the team that has loaned them out a few seasons ago, so clubs now have no say in this either way.

Sorry Kamy, I'm sure you're right, but just wanted to make absolutely certain that you haven't mis-read the paper?

If this is true then the it's disgustingly negligent of the club who quite clearly will have mis-led and even out-right lied to the fans. I guess it's something that we should be getting used to after last season's Bentley debacle though.

This Di Santo kid has never played a game of Premier League football and yet he is our Roque replacement? Unbelievable.
