No point spending all that money is there? Keep our powder dry! Not with today's inflated prices. Best just to hang on. Prices are just bound to improve in January, they always do.

Then again I doubt it is true. It can't be.

Actually prices tend to be even higher in January. Clubs tend to panic buy or buy emergency replacements so clubs raise their prices.

Nicko said we were still chasing a main striker last night, why would that have changed now?

well apparently we had categorically signed him last night..and now he is back off home, so anything can happen.

Not a major surprise. Didn't see where this guy fitted in.

There obviously must be a place for a winger/second striker in the squad though or Sam wouldn't have gone down the road of trying to sign him in the first place.

I'm very disappointed but I will trust Sam's judgement on this one, he must have a serious flaw to be not even worth a gamble at £1.7 million. Hopefully he'll continue to look for a similar player because I do believe we need one to challenge Gamst and Diouf.

I would have thought that Hoillet or Elrio are rivals to the above? I would much rather spend £2 million on a central midfielder, this is an area where we are weak.

What a load of rubbish.

Find one quote by Allardyce or anyone else at Rovers which has turned into an outright lie.

It would be disgustingly negligent of the club to go and blow 10 million quid on Kevin Davies, or 12 million on Darren Bent, or even 9 million on Peter Crouch (who wouldn't move beyond Watford Gap anyway).

If the answer to boosting the firepower is a proven goalscorer costing less than 20% of those ridiculous fees, and a promising youngster on loan from Chelsea, then that's fantastic business.

The only people feeling lied to I would suggest are those who have been lapping up the constant stream of idle speculation on this thread. Just because this Algerian bloke has sneaked in under the radar (and was already at Brockhall - medical completed - when his name appeared on here yesterday), then the tittle-tattle generation are feeling a bit short changed.

Why aren't people satisfied unless big money is spent? The players that are through the door have two legs and two arms each, even if they only cost 1.7 million.

Darren Bent is going to move for 14 million!! I'm not even sure he's got two legs. Poggy was supposedly going to cost 9 million, but be on a free in January. Utter madness in a crazy market which we are better off ignoring.

If the market has been as meticulously scoured as we are led to believe, and two players have come in now, then I should think that's your lot folks. If you don't like it, sell your season tickets back to the club.

Sam has come out and said that he will both replace Roque and be prepared to spend big in order to get that replacement. We've also been told by JW that a large percentage of the fee received for Roque and Derbs will be re-invested. Both of these points have been reported numerous times. If the money isn't spent, then that will be misleading the fans, especially if Di Santo was the intended replacement all along.

If, and remember I'm saying if , we go into the season with a strike force of Di Santo (who still hasn't signed), McCarthy and Roberts, we will struggle to score goals. I'm banking on the fact that this is just a bluff and that we will be getting a good striker in. I understand that it's difficult, and I agree that Davies for £10m would be equally negligent - as I have posted numerous times on the subject - but if Sam is actually happy with our striking options for next season, then I'm very worried. I'm worried not just because our playing staff is inaequate for anything more than a relegation scrap, but also because, regardless of being happy with the current squad, if we have the money to bring in further players to improve it, then we should. As with Bentley, I fail to believe that there are no options out there.

As for 'lapping up the speculation', well I've been very clear on my thoughts on Kevin Davies, all along knowing that we wouldn't be bringing him in due to the size of the fee, while I also voiced my doubts over Di Santo. I hadn't heard enough on the numerous others to think that we were necessarily pursuing them either.

I swear, even if the glass had but a drop of water left in it, you'd be claiming it half full. I'm sure you're more than satisfied for critical areas of the squad to be neglected season after season, but I'm not - especially when we have the money to be making improvements. You love to pick up on my posts and then ignore my responses, so I won't hold my breath for one.

Just an observation.

Sam will be happy with his options when Di Santo checks in.

But he will be over-joyed if he gets a top-line, proven, experienced striker too...

Maybe that last par was missed by the paper.

There is no way you are going into the campaign without landing a 'biggie' - a new striker with a good record.

Anyone who saw Benni and Jason at Leeds will have seen - like the manager obviously has since he arrived - that you need something else and something fresh.

AND ANOTHER THING...SAM WASN'T EVEN QUOTED IN THE ARTICLE...SO CHILL A WEE BIT.

This is more reassuring to hear.

Perhaps Hoilet's performance last night put him nearer to the first team than first thought and the need for another similar player became less? I share the feelings of others on here - he looked to be a good player on the videos (yeah yeah youtube can make anyone look good) - his finishing ability is not something that can be learnt - you've either got it or you are Jason Roberts.

You already have winger/strikers in Pedersen, Diouf, the new boy Van Heerden, the kid Holiett and your own Doran.

You almost have too many...the Algerian kid only made sense if someone was leaving.

However the speed of this on-off move makes me think there must have been something wrong with his 'test' on Tuesday.

Of course, we could do with an official explanation...

I think last nights perfromance of Hoilett and Van the Man might have swayed Sams mind ..................Feel for the Young lad..........I think Rovers know they might have found 2 Gems and for kamel its hust plain unlucky in that they are similar players and similar build............Hope he doesnt come back to haunt us........Portsmouth might get him now...........

I was thinking the same about Hoillett, that maybe he is earmarked for a first team impact this season and BFS is impressed.

that, and maybe the fact that we have some movement on other players and the budget needs to be spent there !

I seem to be one of a few people who are genuinely happy about how the window has gone and where our squad is at the moment.

Overall: Look at where we were in May and where we are now before you judge how well Sam has done during the window. So far I reckon he's done as well as anyone could have hoped for.

i think most of us are happy with they way the transfer window seems to be going... BUT you know you cant please everyone all of the time... im happy now things seems to be moving and i do think sam will bring in a striker and maybe a box to box midfielder... he watches the games we do and im sure he can see the same problems as us but we just dont know what he is thinking and how he is going to play next year...

i agree give him time....

Let's hope so.

Would Ghilas have been anything other than a bit part player?

Really like the sound of this Hoillett guy. But Sam, we *still* need new bodies. This old squad of our's really needs freshening up.

Then why was he at Leigh last night?

He must only have been told this morning.
