i think sam is experienced enough to know that going into a season with 2 front line strikers is just asking for trouble. We will sign someone it is just a case of waiting. Sometimes you just cant rush deals. Wait for other teams to sign targets and pick up the one we want that is left.

However, it's the relatively early start to the season that is causing the anxiety in fans. As you say we can't afford to go into the season with only 2 real striking options and presumably that's one of the reasons we sold RSC early. We don't seem to be making a lot of progress on replacing either him or Derbyshire and realisticallly, waiting till the end of August to bring in a striker is not an option because we simply must get off to a good start next season. You need to get the guy in t at least some of preseason to get him used to the way the team play and so on. No point in rushing and panic buying but at the same time one striker must come in soon I would think or we will really struggle.

Even City are struggling for their targets at the moment despite their cash, we will see what happens but Sam will know the score and if anyone can find a decent striker,he can!!

Dont panic, in panic situations, logic disappears!!

It is frustrating that it is obvious we need a striker as we have just sold our Number1 striker!

Yet there doesnt seem to be anyone of similar class within(or anywhere near) Our price range.

Im starting to worry that we will only add Vieri and a Litaesque signing before the season curtain raiser!

You don't know that though. The only people who know are Sam and JW. I doubt we will have only Jason and Benni come the first game of the season. Teams set prices high and then realise that nobody is coming in and are willing to accept less. Prime example is us telling the press we wanted £20m for rocky and then taking a lot less up front.

If they play at their best, Benni and Roberts are a good strike partnership. Diouf too if Emerton comes back on the right.

I'd rather we use the big money to sign a good central midfielder.

i agree with that. personally i reckon you get the best out of benni if he feels he`s the main goalscorer at the club. all we need is a good targetman as an alternative to roberts to play alongside him, not nesseserily a 20 goal a season man to rival benni. that`s where somebody like kenwyne jones is a good option. still and all though, we need another option to get goals in case benni gets injured.

If there was a top American target man Sam would swim the Atlantic to get him right now.

I freely acknowledge that I am not an expert on target men (or any other aspect of soccer other than coaching girls under 8). But from what I've read, heard and seen, the U.S. has Nate Jaqua (Seattle Sounders, age 27), Conor Casey (Colorado Rapids (with a few years in Germany), age 27), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo, age 31), Chris Pontius (D.C. United, age 22), Adam Cristman (Kansas City Wizards, age 24) and Kenny Cooper (F.C. Dallas (also some time in ManU's youth system), age 24).

All of them might have what it takes. Ching is the most experienced but oldest (though fit). I personally think they would all be worth a look, starting with Casey.

^ Isn't Viduka consistently injured? Though I liked what I saw of him at Newcastle.

He has had a run of bad injuries but on a free he at least adds some depth (and quality when fit), espeically if we spend the money for the midfielder we all want.

If Vidula is on free (and not retired), I could see bringing him in, so long as it was a performance based contract or with reduced wages during any injury period.

I agree that the mid-field needs some attention. Bring in some reliable players and cut some of the dead wieght.

Being a world cup year could be good as he has stated he wants to play, so he might actually pull his finger out...

No he wouldn't. He's lumbered around pitches doing very little for years - why do people think he would change now? Allardyce is a football manager, not a miracle worker. And although I don't know that we've made no real progress towards signing another striker, very few deals stay under wraps nowadays - there are too many people involved in most transfers for it to be kept totally quiet. If there was a concrete interest in anyone, I reckon we'd hear. Chelsea guy I don't count - that's a maybe but there are a lot of ifs and buts about it.

I agree that we should be given Vieri a 1 one year contract with a pay as you play contract if he impresses on Sam. I heard his comments that he wants to be in the World cuo in South Africa! Why not? If he plays good for Rovers he will be in the squad. We will see what happens in this one.

He will only be Fowler's replacement as I see us signing a top star striker soon!

I think you are one of an increasingly small number who sees us signing a top star striker soon or indeed ever. I don't think anyone really expects that. A decent one is what most of us are hoping for, and if you look at what people here are saying, we're getting to the point hwere an adequate one will do. Next thing we'll all be begging to sign Davies

You could say that about every Newcastle player. There's a reason why they went down and it wasn't due to lack of quality players. Just severe mismanagement.

Viduka, while old, could still be a quality player. Being Australian, I've watched him on numerous occasions and think he's definitely worth a shot if on a free. He's a big, strong guy and would fit into the team well.

Still though... I want Cardozo. Sign him already! The guy is perfect for our team.

Signing Viduka would be a step in the wrong direction. Has a season or 2 left in him, is not better than McCarthy OR Roberts, how many games did he start last season?

Getting rid of dead wood and bringing in almost dead wood isn't the answer, as much as we all want a quick fix.

Why do people want Newcastle's deadwood?

They were relegated, because of a reason.

Former Tottenham, Blackburn and Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson has signed for Bolton on loan from West Brom - The Sun

Have they hired monkeys to do the work this summer too?

Not sure about that. Macarthy never seemed to play all that well with RSC alongside and he is about as good a target man as there is.

If Sam wants a target man and crocuh and jones are out of the price range then Viduka has to be it. If we are looking at Veiri then Viduka needs to get shot.

Bit extreme neekoy, but I agree in principle. ^_^

The financial situation at the club may force the sale of Samba.

Deadly Dirk made the same assertion about the clubs finances being so precarious that we will have to sell Samba if a reasonable bid came in. Yet, when asked about the finances he didn't know what the position is/was.

Don't mean to be having a go at anyone, but there's nothing to back these claims up [that I'm aware of]. Like others, selling Samba now would be completely the wrong message to send to anyone.
