We can't afford proven Premiership players. Of our squad the only players who had played consistently in the Prem before signing for us are Diouf, Dunn, Roberts and Robinson.

All of whom cost between 2-3.5 million...we just sold two players for 21 million...I'd say we can afford some.

Well, maybe. Dunn was in the Championship at the time, Robinson seemed to be viewed as finished, Diouf had threatened to stab his team mate, and Roberts was coming to the end of his contract.

I dare say if we find a player we want with the right Premiershi experience in one of those catagories we would be able to sign them. I'm sure Sam would whip his check book out. Unfortunately there aren't.

To be honest all of our best players in recent seasons have not been 'premiership proven' - Friedal, Nelsen, Samba, Warnock, Emerton, McCarthy, Cruz, Pedersen, Reid, Tugay, Bentley, Niell.

The only two exceptions are Savage and Bellamy (quite a while ago now). One was massively over priced (due to his 'experience') and the other had fallen out with the entire Barcode dressing room.

Frankly I don't see the value in 'premiership proven' players. Its about finding decent players.

nicko any news on the managers for southampton and newcastle cus i heard 2 day that the group that might buy newcastle dont want shearer

any truth in this ??????

Is there really a group trying to buy the Toon? I have to say that one is a mystery to us all...

Why the fuss over Shearer anyway? Beats me.

Newcastle United should get an experienced manager who can turn them round and get them promoted.

What price is Alan Curbishley for that job?

That's just a thought, not a tip.

By the way, Ruud is in the Real Madrid squad in Dublin.

Sounds like he wants to prove his fitness.

Interesting.

I thought the rules had been changed in this country. Perhaps not then.

Even if it's not allowed, I'd guess there are ways around it. i.e agreeing a deal for a player now, but with him not actually moving until next summer. The result is the same as if he were to be loaned back straight away. One has to make sure there are no loopholes in the contract though ;)

Absobloodyexactly.

He's the people's choice, but his brief tenure last season was a shambles. He couldn't even give them a brief run of form, or galvanise the troops on the last day of the season when they should have been playing out of their skins.

Boggles the mind.

Because he is good.

Is it a loan deal, if it is why would he be upset with him getting playing time. It will be Fergie's decision won't it so it doesn't make any sense.

He's a Salford lad who supports United as well. So i can't see why he would go permanently, especially if Fergie rates him.

The lad is walking...permanently.

Agree with you there for the most part, Joey.

My main exception is that you considered Savage over-priced. At the time I think a few eye brows were raised at the size of the fee, but he proved to be an absolutely inetegral part of the team right up until he got injured. In fact, I'd say he was Hughes's best and most important signing.

Also, there is definitely a value in having players with experience in the league - it shows that they can cut the mustard, while they'll presumably settle in quicker. However, it is no essential and, as you say, most of our best players have come in from abroad. The over-inflated prices that Englishmen, in particular, but also domestic players command is hugely over-inflated in relation to players from foreign leagues.

Nicko, why are you so sure that Di Santo will sign for us?

Rovers and Chelsea have a gentleman's agreement that suits all parties.

Chelsea want to let Ancelotti see him first, but their 'main men' are happy to let him go - and play for Rovers.

I felt - when I first heard about it - that it was very shrewd business.

The fact that every club is struggling to sign a good striker this summer just proves that is a fair assessment.

He is a goodie.

I didn't mean that he was a bad player, he was excellent for us, but at 30 you should never be paying close to 4 million for a player of his ability.

It probably was worth it in the end, but at the time Birmingham thought they were screwing us.

As for Hughes' best signings it is hard to say because there were just so bloody many of them - Cruz, McCarthy, Bentley, Nelsen, Samba, Bellamy and Warnock are a fantastic testament to how shrewd he was. All of them were brilliant value, as good pieces of business as achieved by anyone in the league since the Prem began.

Nicko, are we any closer to getting Ricky Sbragia in and could this be why Bobby Downes left the club today?

Not related in any way. Sbragia can move if he wants to...there may be some things to sort out at the Sunderland end first. However there is clearly a place for him at Rovers if he wants it.

How many times have you seen all three to make that comparison?

Eckersley is a better defender than the other two.

Enough to make a sound judgement. ;)

And if you think Eckersley is better than the pair of them then you're sorely mistaken.

In any case, Patrice Evra is the first choice left-back at Man Utd and Rafael will become the first choice right-back so it's in Eckersley's best interest to accept that he's not good enough to cement a place at a top club and join a lesser one.. just like Phil Bardsley did.

I doubt that you saw them too often. But I will let that pass.

Rafael will play for Man U, his twin might get a game at some time but is already being considered for 'loan' duty.

Eckersley will have a long career in the top flight.

There won't be many better out-of-contract right backs than that kid.

Good signing.
