I didn't mean that he was a bad player, he was excellent for us, but at 30 you should never be paying close to 4 million for a player of his ability.

It probably was worth it in the end, but at the time Birmingham thought they were screwing us.

As for Hughes' best signings it is hard to say because there were just so bloody many of them - Cruz, McCarthy, Bentley, Nelsen, Samba, Bellamy and Warnock are a fantastic testament to how shrewd he was. All of them were brilliant value, as good pieces of business as achieved by anyone in the league since the Prem began.

Was it really as much as £4m? I thought it was widely reported as £2.5m at the time? I could be wrong though. From Birmingham's perspective, I think it was more a case of being gutted at losing their best player, but the fee cushioning the blow a little.

Agreed, Hughes's signings are pretty much all excellent, but Savage was just so important to us in our first season staying up and then kicking on to Europe. He was just so consistent and vital to making the team so hard to beat.

Enough to make a sound judgement. ;)

And if you think Eckersley is better than the pair of them then you're sorely mistaken.

In any case, Patrice Evra is the first choice left-back at Man Utd and Rafael will become the first choice right-back so it's in Eckersley's best interest to accept that he's not good enough to cement a place at a top club and join a lesser one.. just like Phil Bardsley did.

Eckersley is a good player, my family are mostly reds and they go to most of the reserve games, they think Eckersley is more of a Neville type player. I don't know why Nicko thinks he's as good as the Da Silva's because that's nonsense. But he is a good player non the less and if he's really going to walk out on a chance to play for United to join a mediocre club like Burnley then the lad must be a bit simple.

Come back in ten years and we will see who plays more Premier League games. It's the only way to judge.

Rafael is a talent, but is defensively hopeless. Fabio is exciting, but has a long way to go.

Eckersley has a chance of being a player. Neville-like, as you say. I would take one of them every day of the week.

Well he'll have to leave Burnley then before he even joins them because if he stays there, he'll only be able to play a maximum of 38 games in the premierleague, as the next time they are there, he would have retired. :P

Keep hoping...

Whatever happened to that 'gap' anyway?

Evening.

If by gap, you were talking about between Blackburn (Premiership), and Burnley (Championship) last season, then I'm sorry but we couldn't go any higher then the premierleague even Blackburn the best that they are couldn't do that. We'll see at the end of May. :D

Yes, Vieri speaks good English because he is basically Australian.

Not quite sure what your point is.

Sorry Nicko...was not trying to make a point at all. I was just reading through your posts and noticed you said he spoke good English. I then had a flash back to some football show of yesteryear when Vieri was in his pomp and remember being shocked when he was interviewed. I expected Salute and got g'day!! I do remember him being extremely articulate however. Great that he is popular with the team...regardless of age there is no doubting his pedigree and class over a number of years.

nicko, your very hopeful for burnley(i know why), but i don`t think they`ll be any better than the likes of west brom were last season. they`ll try to play `the right way`, but ultimatly it`ll be their undoing. i wanted sam at rovers for the very reason that we are getting past being able to compete in the prem using a totally passing style due to a lack of quality in our squad, and there`s nobody better at getting the best out of limited players in the premier league than sam, albeit using the `percentage` style.

i`d have us down for roughly tenth this season WITHOUT any further signings. as for burnley? they might have a chance of scraping survival due to so many poor sides this coming season.

And in an interview I saw years ago he named Alan Border as his favourite sportsman!

Fredrico Macheda, must be on a lot then because i think i read today that he had £20 000 worth of stuff nicked from his house

Yep I think its just worth bearing in mind when people are speculating player wages. I heard 15k a week for Tugay on here today, never would the legend be on so little as a prem player.

you have to remember though that pre season plays a big part in how good you do in the league look at rovers when we had mark hughes good pre seasons led to good seasons

so if burnley lose 2-1 to bradford city that doesnt look good lmao

I doubt that you saw them too often. But I will let that pass.

Rafael will play for Man U, his twin might get a game at some time but is already being considered for 'loan' duty.

Eckersley will have a long career in the top flight.

There won't be many better out-of-contract right backs than that kid.

Good signing.

Sensible... Fabio may as well get some experience elsewhere because he's got Patrice Evra ahead of him in the pecking order. Eckersley may do well at Burnley and may indeed have a career in the top flight. I'm pretty sure that Rafael and Fabio will have superior careers though.

Agreed.

It's fair to say that competition for places won't be as fierce at Turf Moor. :D

Another two examples of young players unable to fill first team places, cheeerio Bobby Downes.

The best news of the last 24 hours for me...

Hopefully this will be a new dawn for the academy.

Good riddance.

Yeah grew up here and still has family here. I think he started to get himself in to a bit of trouble when he was a young lad and his father gave him the choice - a job or take football serious, which he chose the latter. His brother has represented Australia.

how does he rate against jacobsen?

and not in terms of potential, just as in for next season who would you rather have?

i'm not digging for anything here, just interested as i've never seen eckersley play and if we should have signed him instead of jacobsen that would be a shame. saying which the last young right back we had was a flop.

Jacobsen is a regular Danish international, premiership experience, compared to a kid who hasnt played much or done anything. But as i said, you dont get premiership experience if you dont play so fair play to Coyley for taking a chance. However i would rather have Lars Jacobsen than Eckersly especially if things dont go as planned
