Spot on. We have been desperate for a decent central midfielder for years - this season if we get 10 games between Reid and Dunn we will be lucky.

Surely Allardyce can't be so one dimensional that he is blinded to looking exclusively at strikers - is it not possible for him to realise we are equally desperate for both?

depends how much our new top striker cost, with the prices going round at the moment, i think all but nearly of our money will be spent in that department rather then the midfield. Lets hope the two new lads are good enough and Reid, Dunn, Emerton and Grella have an injury free season!!

Judging by the state of the current teams, I would expect Portsmouth and Wigan to go down next season. That would be my bet anyway, we'll see what happens at the end of the season...

I like how people on here debate things as though they're professors of football transfers. Janko would be a massive gamble... I remember we looked at Segundo Castillo who also played in the Austrian league and Ince decided not to take him, so Everton did. Where is he now? Sitting on the bench as a massive flop. Didn't he score an own goal as well?

What about players like Shevchenko or even Owen who were proven quality but turned out to be complete flops in their respective teams? You'd think there'd be "re-sale value" of some sort in them as well, but there wasn't. It's impossible to tell how a new signing will do, he can be a completely brilliant acquisition like Santa Cruz was in his first season, or they can get injured and be ruled out for an entire season.

We're fans, we're not experts that are watching these players on a day to day basis judging their qualities and abilities to decide who's right for the team and who isn't. Sam and his staff are though, so all we can do is hope they're doing their job well and finding the right players. If Sam thinks he can get Kevin Davies and get 10+ goals out of him next season then I say go for it, but it's really up to him. You have to remember that his signings so far have done a great job. He brought Diouf in who really gave the team a boost with his lively and hard working performances and Givet was a rock at the back. So I would trust Sam in signing players who he thinks can do the job required of them.

What I would give to have him be our manager. (Flame me all you like, that's a completely honest statement.)

I hear the club shop has ordered in 20,000 neck braces for the coming season, looking up the better part of 90 minutes can cause damage.

at least it will be premership football and not championship football we are watching though!!

I see resale value is coming up again, in my view it's just a bonus, in an ideal world we'd always like to sign someone with a re-sale value but we can't do that at the risk of our long term success.

We have to go for the best available regardless of age right now, we can't afford to take a risk this year after our flirt (Bordering on full intercourse ;)) with relegation last year.

What's the resale value of a 25 year old who flops and we get relegated with? Obviously that's a risk with any player but if it's a tossup between a 33 year old with slightly more ability than a 25 year old then we have to go with the 33 year old in my opinion, unless prices dictate us otherwise.

I'm starting to feel quite good about Vieri in some ways though as it's very risk free. He's basically the exact striker BFS wants, unfortunately a few years too late but judging from the comments coming out of the camp (Although you'd expect them to be positive obviously while he's still with us) it looks like he is showing a desire to play football and you have to admire any 36 year old Italian international with his pedigree prepared to come on a training camp with no promise of even a trial. He obviously wants to play again and perhaps believes he has an outside shot at the WC. Even if he doesn't as long as he believes it then it's good for us.

If he signs on a short term deal and doesn't even play at least it could be a good player for whoever we do buy to learn from. If BFS wants to bring in another big target man then there are not many better than Vieri to learn it from even if he can't cut it himself anymore, if it turns out he can cut it then I'm all the happier.

Hughesy you brought up my reference to Tugay being on 15k, obviously that was a guestimate but I don't think it was too far off, I remember when his contract ran out at the end of the 2008 season it was reported he would be offered less due to his age and heavily appearance based. Obviously with the amount of games he played we probably ended up paying him closer to 30k or so most weeks.

As long as we get Di Santo I don't think there is any need to panic, if we started the season with Roberts, Benni, Di Santo, Vieri, with the likes of Gallagher, Diouf, Hoillet, Samba as backup it certainly wouldn't be the end of the world. I can see why BFS isn't panicking just yet and is taking his time over the targets.

Can't wait for the new season, come on Rovers!

I think right now Big Sam doesn't want to complicate things. We've lost Roque and Derbyshire, so fresh firepower is our first priority. When that's taken care of, then we can look at consolidating the midfield.

Can have the best striker in the world but we aren't able to get the ball off the other side/break up their attacks we are going to struggle.

Is it too much to expect our manager to be able to look at both?

As for Reid and Dunn we all know they aren't going to play anything like a full season and Emerton needs to play right side.

If Sam goes 4-4-2 formation we won´t buy new CM I think. If there´s 3 playing mid midfield we might go for another CM. Let´s face the fact we won´t be able to buy even cheap version of Lampard or Gerrard. CM´s with scoring ability or great passing cost much money. It´s gonna be something like this..

Robbo

Jacbsen-Samba-Nelsen-Givet

Diouf-Emo-Warnock-MGP

Di Santo-MR X

Brown

Khiza

Andrews (Grella)

Dunn

Elrio

Benni

Roberts

I don't know, we played mid-table football without a midfield top-end of last season.

why don't you give sam some money then, i am sure he will be happy to take some of you. If he can find a top striker that won't cost our transfer budget, i am sure he will be in the market for another midfielder. But a top stricker cost lots of money!.

Don't forget as well sam has signed two midfield players as well this summer.

Guest Wen Y Hu
"The phantom has struck! Marek Mintal from Nurenburg and the band Knipst, is in the Clubs night garden. Butros Butros Jerry Venglos of Sport Bild claims "He's had enough of the Bundesliga and is off to England. Eintracht Frankfurt are resigned to losing him after the mighty Blackburn offered his wife a fur coat. That **************** Santa Cruz is a gobs****."

That last bit beats me though.

The last bit: "Ob Mintal bei den Rovers auch roquen würde?"

Just to add to bob fleming's faithful and impeccable translation, capturing as it does the essence of SportBild earnestness, the final, tantalising, crucial crux of this might be translated thus:

"But would Mintal also roque at Blackburn, though?" (i.e., just as Santa Cruz roqued at Blackburn...)

The German wit at its rapier-like Bic razor sharpest: roque = rock. Geddit?

By the way, gumboots is right: the article is from April...

What's it say Nicko

Sunny is going to Real Betis from Valencia...and not Burnley. His mistake.

I think the quote is something like 'I have decided to take the easy life in the Spanish second division rather than face the impossible task of pushing the legend that is Graham Alexander out of the Mighty Clarets starting eleven.'

i bet that was a hard choice for Sunny to make!!!

Yeah, playing in front of a couple of thousand in Spain's second division or running out against Man U, Chelsea and in the derby...

Hard choice? Wrong decision. Still, always better to know whether people have the bottle BEFORE they sign.

Could be a wise move in the longer term. You journos are all about the here and now.

In a years time Betis will be promoted and Dingles will be in the Chumpionship ;)

surely alexander will be getting top goalscorer in the prem next season anyway so i don't think they will be looking to replace him with talent any time soon

He's got two of them in right now...and another one in the pipeline that would be rather good.

SSN - 11.50 Wigan, Stoke City and Blackburn are reportedly tracking Lens striker Aruna Dindane. Our sources in France claim it is Blackburn that hold the strongest interest.

According to lequipe and francefootball headlines he's most likely going to Stoke.

sorry if you have answered this before but how many more signings can you see them making till the start of the season and or the end of the window?

i'm guessing they'll need them in quite early given the start they have

that's a hark back to Santa Cruz's wonderful single "Ich roque"

Do you think the two midfielders signed are the answer?!

A top "stricker" does indeed cost a lot of money. The point is though we are crying out for both a striker and a midfielder but Allardyce seems to have eyes only on one of the two and the concern is we start the season with Dunn and Reid who are rarely fit; Grella who has only rarely performed and a few players untried at this level.

The rest of the Premier League must be having sleepless nights already at the thought of our midfield of steel

Four, including Easton and Eckersley. Maybe more if some leave.

The good thing is Coyley has most of his new guys in a month before a ball is kicked in anger.

Sorry...I have just been sick...watching Tevez's staged entrance at Man City...please!
