Sorry...I have just been sick...watching Tevez's staged entrance at Man City...please!

Watching that tit Cook meet him at the entrance like a long lost brother was just quite simply embarrassing!

I like how people on here debate things as though they're professors of football transfers. Janko would be a massive gamble...

Absolutely. To consider a move for him at £7m not a gamble is strange. If he flops, how do we get our £7m back?

Any idea on Bojinov's availability? Can't be happy at city and must be about 8th choice on the pecking order.

Still young I think 23-25, been unlucky with injuries but showed promise when he returned at the tail end of last season.

3-4million???

I too am warming to the Vieri idea, pay as you play for a season would be a good call and he's exactly the right target man were looking for.

I saw him play at the end of last season and he would appear to have eaten his brother.

You can ask that about any player though, and Premier League experience is no guarantee whatsoever. Just look at signings like Keane to Liverpool etc. Kevin Davies is also a gamble because there aren't any 32/33 year old strikers starting regularly in the Premier League - there must be a good reason for that.

Even if Janko flopped there would be clubs in Europe willing to pay for him because his record so far is brilliant. We probably wouldn't get the whole lot back but enough to put towards bringing in someone else. In my mind that makes him less of a risk than Davies because, as he is approaching 33, we wouldn't get that second chance.

Also, the rewards for gambling on someone like Janko are far greater than gambling on someone like Davies. The very best Davies would give you is about 10 goals a year, whereas Janko could potentially be a goal machine. Players do come from weaker leagues and keep scoring the goals here, like Yakubu for example.

Nicko,

Have you any idea why this transfer window seems more painful than others? It just seems to be very slow with not many quality players moving.

Is it the Man City effect? Economy?

Just wondering if you had a view?

Cheers

It's actually moved at a reasonable rate for the likes of Man U and Man City, even Chelsea. However as more than half of the Premier League are watching the pennies - and there are not many good players freely available - then it is a case of being careful.

There are also a couple of notorious ditherers at some of the 'bigger' clubs who have been missing their targets or seem unable to close deals.

There will be a lot of deals done before it's all over and the inevitable last dance at the disco jobs...only the smooching might start with them a week before the end of the month rather than just on the final date.

So we can blame Redknapp and O'Neill then!

Just seems the quality is not that high. Man U have not signed 'Top' quality, Chelsea really only Zhirkov and Man City did not buy 'Top' quality either.

Just does not seem as exciting as years gone by... let's do it NFL style. Have it all on one day that would stir things up!

Honestly LeC, I can't see anyone anywhere giving us £7m back for him, if he wasn't up to it here. Very few clubs in Europe have £7m to spend on anyone, - never mind someone who's being offloaded by Rovers.

I'm not saying we should, or shouldn't go for him. I'm just replying to the earlier post where it was claimed it wasn't a gamble, because we would get the money back.

Olympiakos just paid £3 million for Derbyshire, I think we would get at least £4 million back for Janko even if he didn't turn out to be a Premier League success.

That's not my biggest argument for signing someone like him though, my reason for that is the potential reward. Someone like Davies still carries risk whilst having a low level of potential reward - 10 goals is a good season for him. Janko is a bigger risk (although slightly offset by having a sell-on value if he fails) but a much higher potential reward.

As our success over the last few years has been down to buying these risky players with high potential for reward, I'd like to see us continuing down that route instead of going for the safe and mediocre option.

nicko, why do you feel rovers would struggle without a striker signing, when we ended last season in near top 8 form with half the players, now available for the start of this season, out injured? roque also only played in about 5 games under sam and matty derbyshire only a couple of sub appearances, the rest upfront was a rotation of roberts, mccarthy, diouf and even samba, and we escaped comfortably. i feel a striker will boost us further, but it`s not nesessery to `save our skins` as you seem to suggest.

also, why would wigan struggle beneath burnley? they have far better players than burnley(and some better than we have too), and i rate martinez as a potentially better manager than coyle off last season`s efforts. the football played by swansea was the best in the entire league last season, and he didn`t get the(admittedly low) millions coyle got to spend.

i respect some of your views, but your bias towards coyle and burnley is just plain fantasy. they will be fighting to stay up and if they try doing it by all out attacking football they will go down.

It's a risk assessment. You scout the player over a number of months and see how good their technique is.

I maintain that if you score goals in a poor league then you will score them anywhere. They may be less in quantity but hitting something like 40 in a season, means he only has to get 25% of that to be a hit in the premiership.

Janko is a far better all round buy than Davies, even at £2m more.

But its not the same.

Benni is a european cup winner and has always been regarded as a very good player. RSC the same and Bellamy was more than proven. Janko is a half season wonder 30+ before christmas (whilst trying to win a new contract), after christmas how many did he score???

Don't get me wrong he looks great in the vid's and scored a shed load, but perhaps we'd be better off waiting on that one and seeing if he can repeat his feets. If we sign our RSC replacement and he flops we'll be in for a repeat of last season. I completely understand why people want to take a punt on him and perhaps even I could be tempted if we could still sign a player with a bit more pedigree than half a season.

yes we may get some funds back should he flop but at what cost? Another season of struggling and both our finances and reputation will suffer just making it even harder.

Its a far bigger risk than any of our previous gambles, but the issue with all of them was not ability.

Benni I agree with, he had the pedigree.

I can't agree at all with RSC though, wasn't his best season's tally previously 5 goals? He was certainly a risk, but obviously a well calculated one by Hughes. Under this supposed criteria we are using now, someone like Roque wouldn't even make it to the shortlist, which is a real shame because I think there are more players like him out there.

I think you need one striker, probably two, or you will be among the bottom six or seven again...you should be aiming higher...big Chris got you out of the cart in a couple of vital games...do you really want that again?

Wigan were poor in the second half of the season and have just lost Valencia...Martinez a better manager than Coyley?...a look at the Championship table and the Cup runs might suggest different.

Of course I am biased about Coyley. He's not let me down so far. Getting Burnley promoted was 'plain fantasy' when I dared to mention it after he arrived. Look what happened next.

Janko in a way reminds me of Zaki. He was unheard of and had a purple patch...but then faded.

Janko like you say bagged 30 prior to Xmas and then only another 10 in the 2nd half - why?

Zaki had 10 prior to Xmas but then didnt score again.

Looks like Janko is settled anyway......

BRETT EMERTON- Is there any sign he`ll be back for the start of the season? I`ve not heard him mentioned at all. Is his injury worse than at first thought?

Yes he is in training and expects to be back prior to the start of the season.

Sorry but that is rubbish, unless you mean proven to be an injury hit striker who could only score 5 goals a season. RSC was a big gamble, there's no debate about that! I remember when we signed him and my friends that follow the Bundesliga laughed at my optimism as they had a very low opinion on him given his form at Bayern.

Of course after his first years at Rovers I was laughing at them but to say Santa was a proven success in a top league when we got him is false.

Four, including Easton and Eckersley. Maybe more if some leave.

The good thing is Coyley has most of his new guys in a month before a ball is kicked in anger.

Sorry...I have just been sick...watching Tevez's staged entrance at Man City...please!

Does Coyley have no faith in the team that got them promoted Nicko? Or will those new signings be on the bench. The players who worked hard to get Burnley promoted, and now have to be sacrificed must be disappointed. Then again, i suppose you have to do what's necessary to stay up. Which begs the question, are the players of last season not good enough for the tough life of Premiership football?

Grabbi wasn't watched live, I recall stories that he was only ever seen on DVD. His goal tallys were ok but no outstanding considering the league. Janko scored more than a goal a game, Grabbi struggled to get a goal every other game.

Having said that Grabbi did score goals, law of dimishing returns. If Grabbi got 2 in 30, Janko should get at least 5. A Bargain at a million less! :P

I am sure there are far more strikers who have come over and been a success from Europe than have failed, you just tend to remember the awful ones and forget the ones who become household names.
