A little unfair. Sam had classy midfielders at Bolton i.e. Jay-Jay and Djorkaeff

Not unfair because you can get classy midfielders to play long ball. They were still classy but the football was not.

Anelka said it - Allardyce's Bolton played kick and rush - barring the odd FA Cup match against inferior opp where they played football.

what role will warnock have this season, as i assume samba will be back at the back with nelsen and givet at left back, does this mean warnock will stay in midfield? if so, he'd do a better job on the left wing instead of pedersen B)

Just read that in the mirror, not confirmed yet though. He is one of the elite Physios and has been at the club along time. We should be doing everything possible to keep him.

Couldn't put it better myself.

Hopefully he's got a few years left on his contract, Replacing him won't be easy TBH I'm hoping we do improve his terms they can't be anything like a players. We need the best physios we can get with some of our squad needing wrapping in cotton wool. We should not let him get away, lets just hope after ten years he's a fully fledged Rover.

I have. I'm free - no class to teach but all the jobs I actually need to do I need to be in my room for and someone else is teaching in my room so i can't do them!

The last week at school is great, stick a dvd on for the kids and then straight on here!

The only problem is, I've watched the begining of 3 different dvds so far this week and not got any further then a hour into any of them!

Football is very much opinionated but I was taught that when you play top sides, you must go with a game plan and stick to it (perhaps if your team was up against it you may go to plan B, still a game plan though)

Sam has realised that if you have got little cash available, not enough real quality in midfield, there is only one main plan,

by pass midfield by going long, against inferior teams, you can play football and match them man for man but we cant do that against midfields of the quality of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea etc. unless we put some real quality in there!!

What you have done in the long ball game is prevented the opponents dominating midfield by starving them of the ball,

yes it gets scrappy but it does work and unfortunately we are in a results business totally dominated by money.

Before Sky and the play offs, around Feb/March many of the games were 'no games' not much to play for if you were mid table, you really were playing for pride!! What it did do though was to allow young players to be blooded into the first team and to express themselves without fear, this doesnt happen now for even the last couple of games could net a team over £3,000,000!!

Now if Fife means you are Scottish, you should know this one!!

The only Englishman ever to captain Scotland!!

How dare you sir?!!! I am more English than St. George (Ooops...aren't we all?). ;) I just happen to have lived In Scotland for the last 30 years.

Reading Sam's comments in the LT, where he's saying progress has been made, - could that mean that we've had a bid for Crouch accepted?

My thinking behind it, is that he also said that Crouch would be welcome, as long as the overall package wasn't too expensive.

Crouch:-

We'd be Just Like the Crazy Gang with that big thing up front

surely, we have to be looking for a youngish striker at the same time a proven player with experience in a competitive league (before u lose ur rags over this i know they are hard to come by but surely there has to be one outhere within out budget. Benni's 31, roberts is also 31, if we do get vieri he's 36.

It fairly clear we need to inject a bit of pace into our team

Crouch in talks with Sunderland according to the BBC - does that make Jones available?

No, Jones will be first choice alongside Crouch with Campbell as back up

The only way Jones would leave is if we signed another striker as well as Crouch and Campbell and even then it would probably be to Spurs.

I don't really have any idea right now where Givet and Warnock will play next year at the moment, but I'd expect both to play.

Givet at center back means dropping either our captain or Samba which I can't see happening (Assuming come first game of the season we've bought a striker and Samba isn't running the front line again!) Then Givet at left back with Warnock in midfield means a lot of competition for places in the center which then throws out a lot more possibilities.

Warnock in midfield leaves only one place (Assuming we play 2 center midfielders) for the likes of Dunn, Grella, Reid, N'Zonzi, Emerton, Andrews (Probably missed someone obvious).

We certainly have enough cover in midfield, outwide we have a number of options as well such as Diouf, Pedersen, Elrio, Emerton, Judge, Hoilett.

We have plenty of quantity, we just lack quality, all of them mentioned above have their weaknesses be it fitness problems, technical limitations, inexperience among others.

Certainly going to be interesting to see how we are going to line up next game of the season.

I was thinking of starting a thread for that exactly but it seems pointless until we have brought a forward in.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't Wayne Roovey pass his medical with a broken metartasal/bone?

Yes, he did, very good point.

The same way RSC passed one at Man City and Ronaldo passed his at Madrid despite both carrying injuries/healing at the time of the their transfers.

What? Roque has a broken foot?

Indeed, I'm sceptical too, tabloid sensationalism and all that.

A bit like story that would shock the world of football (or something to that effect), which turned out to be a Championship goalie having taken some cough medicine.

Still waiting for you to tell me the last time a 'name' player failed a drugs test after an important game in England?

I think it has a lot with the financial aspect to do, rather han the fitness thingy.

Wow that is very impressive! He is almost as good as Tommy Briggs ;):) . But seriously, if he can get even half of that back again he will be the best we have had for a few years. Just one thing he needs to know though......keep your shirt on when you score, or you will be forever suspended. (2 yellows in each match he plays). ;)

Yes, he did, very good point.

Still makes you wonder how though, I'm sure they said Owen's medical was 3 hrs long so it must involve a pretty thorough exam. (Although I guess the timescale is different for different players, they were probably being extra careful with Owen.)

I'd expect it to involve a fair bit of running at full pace though and how can Downing do that with a recovering broken foot, can't be good to put it under that strain surely.

Wasn't it rumoured that Given failed his medical to Citeh but they bought him anyway? If not then I've just started the rumour :D

So since there is no Rovers news nicko does Downing come to Villa as an addition to the squad or as a replacement for Young do you think?

No and that's not what I said Mr strawman destroyer. My point is medicals are a load of tosh if a team want a player badly enough.

I thought your point was that the cases were the same.

But, then again, I never know what your point is...and neither do you.

Seems odd to make that Villa spend so much on a player who won't be fit for the first two months or more of the season.

I can't remember, but surely that's only important if is has repercussions for that game? From what I've heard so far nothing is going to change, it seems a relatively minor event, if admittedly very unusual.

Not having a dig or anything, just explaining why I'm going to refrain from being excited by the potential new signing until I know the name.

This season could be make or break for a few, reid, dunn and grella all got to show they are capable of playing a good chunk of the games in reid's case that might be an issue  with a small squad we cant afford to carry to many injury prone players. It would be nice to go into the new season where all 3 are fully fit and raring to go which make our team much stronger as all 3 would on most occasions get into the team when fully fit.

The same in that players who are carrying injuries passed their medicals, it was quite clear what I meant to anyone with the ability to read and comprehend English.

A lot of things in football seem odd, like Ronaldo being bought for £80m despite carrying an injury and believe it or not some of the things you say (ergo the Williams comments on Gartside which you still haven't fully explained) don't always "make sense".

Medicals are done for insurance purposes and I'm sure caveats are added if they do find a problem. But let's get away from the idea that a player has to be match fit at the time of signing for a deal to be legal...doesn't work that way.
