Just noticed that the number of views for this site has gone over the 100,000 mark. I think this must be an underestimation as I have viewed the thread 10's of 1000's times myself. I am getting very tense about our search for a striker - like everyone else. We have come to have high expectations following our captures of recent years, Roque, Benni, Belamy and so on. However, more than ever considering the possible financial implications of an overpriced, over paid striker I think it is time for cool nerves and a steady hand. Saw that Zamora is being toted around for big money but never rated him.

This season could be make or break for a few, reid, dunn and grella all got to show they are capable of playing a good chunk of the games in reid's case that might be an issue  with a small squad we cant afford to carry to many injury prone players. It would be nice to go into the new season where all 3 are fully fit and raring to go which make our team much stronger as all 3 would on most occasions get into the team when fully fit.

Posted by Saviola??

Are you our new striker? ;)

I thought your point was that the cases were the same.

But, then again, I never know what your point is...and neither do you.

Seems odd to make that Villa spend so much on a player who won't be fit for the first two months or more of the season.

Why? Is he only signing a three month deal?

;)

Still waiting for you to tell me the last time a 'name' player failed a drugs test after an important game in England?

Adrian Mutu

Ijah Anderson

Chris Armstrong

Mark Bosnich

Lee Bowyer

Some more I haven't mentioned

....bit of a stupid thing to act all arrogant about really seeing as there as been LOTS of cases of footballers failing drug tests in England

nicko, I have a message for you!!!!.......

Aston Villa have money. Aston Villa need a good start to the season after the shocker they had at the end of the last one.

So I am sure their fans will be overjoyed to find that their big-money buy won't be able to play for them until a big chunk of their season is over.

Two months, probably closer to three gone before he is fit to fly...strange.

Fair point, Nicko.

I think that Downing will turn out to be a good signing long-term... I hope Villa fans will realise that if they start the season sluggishly.

Downing is a good player, but the heat is right on O'Neill just now and goes and does something quirky like this...

There are enough Villa punters around here - without sparking an invasion it would be interesting to know if this is the move they wanted for the new season.

Bad enough to lose their skipper, but to bring in a star signing who won't be ready strikes me as eccentric.

Why keep trying when it's irrelevant...unless the FA say that makes the Sheff Utd and Preston semi-final void and therefore Preston and Burnley must play a re-run of the final. Which they won't.

Downing operates down the left where Ashley Young was so effective last season so how are they going to play together ? Or is Young heading out of Villa ?

West Brom captain Jonathan Greening has handed in a written transfer request according to PA

Not wanting to invade a Rovers board so sorry,

Villa fan here.....

Depends if it is THE signing of the summer. Downing will go to the left with Young behind the strikers.

I don't think the heat is on O'Neill too muck, last season was great but we just ran out of steam.

Downing is a good player, Distin will sign this week for £3m.

This means two large holes would be fixed.

All we need then is a striker....Tuncay or Bent?

It does make you think Young is going...but then you think why bring in an injured player to replace another star. This one is really a puzzler.

I don't want to give any more clues out on the names I think it has come down to...trying hard to crack this...hopeful.

Nicko, could you tell us at least the number of letters in his name or syllables? Sounds like....etc! Then all the teachers can get their classes to work it out tomorrow! Beats DVd`s hands down!

Really hope this striker hunt bears fruit but it could be that we are last in line and take the rejects.

Last comment on Villa..I promise!

Young can play on the right/left/secondary striker, Downing left/central, Milner right/left/central and Petrov. Not to mention if we go 5 in midfield (poss Sidwell).

Villa were best last season when Carew was injured and Agbonlahor was on his own.

It is a shrewd move as Young was getting marked out of games towards the end of last season, now he can move around a bit.

Young will not go unless it is to Chelsea or United for £25/30m. United have finished spending and Chesea signed Zhirkov.

Sorry for the intrusion

O'Neill likes his british players, Downing is available and at a reasonable price and is a good age. Can't see Villa fans having too many problems with the signing.

What other british left wingers could Villa sign ?

Andrews is better :D

I don't think he is. Greening has years of experience at the top level and he has genuine flair in my opinion. Surely two million is worth a punt. Also, Andrews has nowhere near the same vision or creative ability of Greening.

Im just pulling your leg mate. Lol. However, a striker is more important it seems. I would still take Murphy over Greening.

Heat on O'Neill? Sounds ominous Mr. Nicko.

I was only judging by the grumbles around and the number of PMs from Villa fans tearing their hair out at a lack of activity.

Yes, Downing is a good player. Yes, £12 million sounds about right.

But would Rovers be happy with that outlay and then waiting until mid- or late-October before seeing their new star play?

If it is for the right player, then yes. Personally I don't think Downing is worth 12 million, certainly not in a just relegated side and when he is carrying an injury. That would be my problem with that particular deal, if we signed a top striker, but he was going to miss the first couple of months then I would be ok with that.

A couple of months and we could be playing catch up, look what happened last year and more importantly, the player will have missed his pre season, could be Christmas before he gets match fit!!
