DeadlyDirk Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I was only judging by the grumbles around and the number of PMs from Villa fans tearing their hair out at a lack of activity. Yes, Downing is a good player. Yes, £12 million sounds about right. But would Rovers be happy with that outlay and then waiting until mid- or late-October before seeing their new star play? It strikes me as odd spending that much money on someone when you have someone better in his position already at the club when surely they need to replace Barry a center midfielder, can't see Young or Downing playing the Barry role. It would be like us spending all our Roque money on a central defender when we already have 3 good ones. Definitely would have me tearing my hair out (If I had any) if we did it. Could still see him going to Man Utd. Anyone who watched Fergies interviews where he says he won't be spending anymore money this summer obviously didn't see the bit where he said there are still 1 month, 2 months till the end of the transfer window so who knows what might happen. The RFW didn't get to where he is today by being open about every little detail. nicko any truth on the David Fevre to Citeh link that someone mentioned earlier? Very much hope not!

nicko Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 Chris Armstong? I seem to recall he was caught out in a random test at Palace after having a recreational puff of whacky backy at his house the night before. Got to say I am losing the will to live on this subject... Kenny was the first 'name' player to fail a drugs test and it came after a major match. Jeez, a national paper thought it was a back page tale. Pardon me for thinking it was a good story.

Now where did i see this scenario before? Oh wait at Rovers. We sell Roque and now we tearing our hair, arms, teeth, legs all off because we havent replaced him yet. Nicko, surely Barry was their most influential player, along with Young. You sold one, and the other might go as well. If i was them Villa fans, i would be asking questions as well.

my_name_is_Earl Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Im just pulling your leg mate. Lol. However, a striker is more important it seems. I would still take Murphy over Greening. Ha ha, I thought we'd lost you for a minute then Greening is younger though so he'd still be my choice at the available price. On a side note, is anyone else concerned that the delay in signing a new striker may hurt us over the summer? By that I mean if we can't get who we want and we have to sign an average joe blow at the last minute for a much lesser fee, the chance to sign other players with the rest of the money will have gone. The reason I mention it is because i'm concerned that this money too may go missing if not spent this summer

If Rovers lost to someone in a playoff semi and we found out later that one of their players failed a drugs test I'd want compensation, I guess there just lucky it wasn't a final. Anyway wasn't Kenny a performance enhancement drug whereas all the others before have been recreational, at least in England. Surely although it would be bad for the club involved in terms of reputation, other clubs wouldn't have been able to claim compensation of someone that failed a recreational drugs test as it hardly made their job of beating them any harder. I'd quite fancy playing a game against a team of stoners

We should have a striker at our pre season training camp, getting use to the feel of his new team mates. Maybe we should just sign Katie Anderton :-) or whatever her name is I'm surprised more wasn't made of it. I'd quite fancy playing a game against a team of stoners Kenny was irresponsible. He knows he is a professional, and that any medication should come from the clubs doctors only. All he had to do was check with the club doctors 1st. If they said its okay, then fine, but he didnt do that.

jellyfish7006 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Downing operates down the left where Ashley Young was so effective last season so how are they going to play together ? Or is Young heading out of Villa ? West Brom captain Jonathan Greening has handed in a written transfer request according to PA Young operated mostly down the left and is excellent for dead ball crosses from the left and cutting inside or crossing from the left. He is also excellent down the middle, remember the game at Goodison when Villa mugged Everton in the last 5 minutes? Young scored both goals down the centre. There has been a feeling among some Villa supporters that Young has been found out to a degree by some managers and unable to get past defenders as he has to cut back and cross on his right foot. Downing may may be a very good move by MON to allow Young to move inside or to the right swapping with Milner.
gumboots Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Nicko, could you tell us at least the number of letters in his name or syllables? Sounds like....etc! Then all the teachers can get their classes to work it out tomorrow! Beats DVd`s hands down! Really hope this striker hunt bears fruit but it could be that we are last in line and take the rejects. Oh I don't only do dvds! Me and my form have cracked missing men puzzles, played football hangman and done those puzzles where the footballer appears out of focus and you have to work out who it is. We're also great at the football brain on Sky sports. Don't know what the girls do while me and the lads are doing that, but they are in such a minority 2/3-1 and don't make much fuss that we don't seem to have any trouble.
saviola Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 nicko, what type of player is sam on the hunt for, one that fits the long ball system?

Downing, Young, Milner, Ablonghor (although I guess Gabby plays more upfront). I suppose Young will partner Carew, Downing left, Milner right? Gabby and Heskey on the bench. Not sure to be honest I am that keen on Villa at the moment, weak through the middle imo compared to Everton, City, Spurs.
Guest bluesue Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 nicko, what type of player is sam on the hunt for, one that fits the long ball system? I think he'll be 5"3 and sam will play his usual short passing game
nicknj72 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 nicko, what type of player is sam on the hunt for, one that fits the long ball system? Hey, if it gets points on the board for Rovers, i'm sure you'll be for it. No prizes for playing pretty but ineffective football like WBA !!!!
LeChuck Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Isn't O'Neill more of a 4-5-1 man? .................Petrov .....Reo Coker...Downing Milner........................Young .............Agbonlahor Just a thought as Downing hardly played on the left for Boro last year and Barry has gone. Even if Downing is going there as a winger I don't see there being a big problem, splitting games between Young, Milner and Downing should be easy, especially as they're in Europe.
nicko Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 nicko, what type of player is sam on the hunt for, one that fits the long ball system? Definitely, and in both cases of the names I believe head the list, which is the only clue I can give as it doesn't give much away.
roversnick Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Greening submits transfer request I don't know why on earth we aren't looking at a player of his ability for a couple of million, our midfield would be much stronger.... i would love to see him in a rovers shirt any signs that we could be interested?

UbuRoi Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 ... HEAD the list... hahahaha! I wonder who that is!
nicko Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 i would love to see him in a rovers shirt any signs that we could be interested? I think Greening may have heard what Fulham pay...
gumboots Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Nice to see high educational standards and no discriination Being female myself I don't see doing football based things as discriminating against girls - they should be interested in everything. And it is the end of term, only 2 more get ups then the kids are off till 7th September (not staff i hasten to add)
accyrover Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 I can't say i'd be too impressed if we went for Greening. Not a very good player in my opinion, but then what do I know ? I suspect I'm not the only one getting tetchy about the striker situation. Every day I wake up and think 'Today's the day !' but its like waiting for Christmas (it may well come to that at this rate !). I'm sure Sam has his targets, but we seem to be priced out of anyone decent, be it on cost or now it seems more often than not, wages. If we 'smash' our transfer record on someone with an average strike rate like Davies or Jones I'll be non too happy, but I suspect thats the level we are looking at, at a premium too. Damn those Arabs and Russians and their oversized wallets. Oh, and Nicko will not even hint at who Sams two targets are until the club has made an official approach, so stop badgering the guy. He's a great source of info on this board so lets just let it lie and see what happens. Accyrover
Paulo Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Please confirm it aint kenwyne jones, the idea leaves a bad taste in my mouth, removed!
