Backroom Tom Posted July 15, 2009 Backroom Posted July 15, 2009 This thread is highly amusing. We have moved from being excited about the prospect of flogging RSC for lots of money to the excitement about having lots of dosh for a new striker to certain posters getting orgasmic about strikers they probably have never seen in the flesh or seen much of on TV. Ooh Janko, oh Kenwyne etc etc The one certainty is that whoever we sign will be rubbish compared with RSC. As mentioned by others if a striker scores more than the 5 or so Roque got this season he is better when it matters. Roque did nothing last season and we did amazingly to get the money we did for him.

BiggusLaddus Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Hey Doctor Khumalo was ace. Creative midfielder, good dribbling and a good passer. Didn't SA have a player called Naughty something at the same time, or have I dreamt that?
saviola Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 what about this fella, Ricardo Oliveria, plays for Real Zaragoza, dont know how much he would cost but decent scoring record whever he's been, even played for milan BUT he is 29 and if sam is gna blow most of the cash he will probably be looking for a younger striker
1864roverite Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 The one certainty is that whoever we sign will be rubbish compared with RSC. On paper Phil you would have to agree but lets take a positive spin on it. Any striker that plays more than 10 games and scores more than 6 goals next season will be a success compared to RSC, agreed ? RSC has a pedigree because of his Bayern links and his status as a top Paraguayan striker AND his number 1 status as the top striker at Ewood. Now his pedigree is somewhat lessened, in fact I would say he is 2nd or 3rd choice now at City, he most certainly is NOT guaranteed to be number 1. If we accept the media reports he signed for £80k a week in order to play European Football City and to join "the project". I wonder just how he feels now reading that Tevez joins on a reported £120k a week with Adebayor coming for an absurd weekly pot of £150k per week ? Suddenly RSC finds a big pecking order in front of him. For 3 slots up front he finds Tevez, Adabayor, himself, Bellamy, Caceido, Robinhood and the rest of the centre forward 11 they have. He no longer is number 1 and he no longer the big shot striker at a small club. At Rovers, the big money striker who comes in finds himself instantly number 1. A half decent striker with a supply line will score a lot of goals. I reckon both McCarthy and Roberts can score 30 goals or more between them if they stay fit and Rovers provide a supply line. On that basis alone BOTH would represent a better return than RSC making them on paper so much more valuable. We can twist stats any which way as you can see.

And likewise, when Drogba was injured last year Chelsea were winning games with goals from midfield! There are different ways of winning football matches, thats why its so interesting!! If we were to get a striker/target man at 6'3" along with Samba and Nzonzi at 6'4" we will be dificult to contain from set plays!!
Lathund Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Didn't SA have a player called Naughty something at the same time, or have I dreamt that? William "Naughty" Mokoena.
Kelbo Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Another thought here as we ponder new signings, how many top level strikers in England have been successful at more than one club over tha last 15 years!!
Iceman Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 William "Naughty" Mokoena. Hahaha, well done Lathund. SA have had some funny name players. Philemon Masinga, and we had a player by the name of Lovers Mohlala, Helman Mkhelele.
den Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Another thought here as we ponder new signings, how many top level strikers in England have been successful at more than one club over tha last 15 years!! Don't know. How many?
nicknj72 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Well Crouch is apparently in talks with Sunderland, so perhaps Kenwyn Jones is your man ?!?! He strikes me as a player Sam would go for. I think, with the right service, he'd be great for Rovers. Nick
mark1875 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Another thought here as we ponder new signings, how many top level strikers in England have been successful at more than one club over tha last 15 years!! so wer looking for a striker who has proved it at top level (presumably for a premiership club) who has then gone in to recreate his form at another prem club? there will be loads who have done it in england unless you meant to put english strikers?
Kelbo Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Don't know. How many? To be honest I dont really know but heres one or two examples, Keane lots of goals at Spurs, very few at Liverpool!! Johnson, scored a few at Everton, not many at Fulham The big fella at Chelsea, Flo, lots of goals but bugger all anywhere else! Bent at Charlton, not many at Spurs It does depend on how a player gels and how he fits into the system, thats why I think more and more Davies would be the sensible option as he fits into the system!!
Florida Rover Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Another thought here as we ponder new signings, how many top level strikers in England have been successful at more than one club over tha last 15 years!!Shearer,Sutton,Sheringham,Cole,Fowler(not for us though),Yorke(not for us though),Ferdinand. These are off the top of my head
BuckyRover Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Stop talking about Davies. He is NOT joining. It would be a recipe for disaster. You talk about systems like people are robots. What about all the bad memories that both he and the fans would obviously have? What if he misses a sitter on his debut? The crowd would be after his blood. If he was to join, in my opinion, it would be the beginning of the end of Sam's tenure at BRFC. The only person who would benefit from signing Davies would be Andrews as he no longer would be public enemy number one.
nicko Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 I'm not even sure this tale will get much in the papers tomorrow, with the Open and the cricket, but for what it's worth... As far as I know the number one target is now Nikola Zigic...Sam has been looking at him for a while and he is the most available striker in the price range. He is the man most likely to arrive as we speak and I believe something will move shortly. Plays for Valencia, who don't want him but are trying to create an auction. Giant Serb, possibly improving with age. Possibly not. Can't say I'm a fan, but it's not down to me. The only other name getting a serious mention right now is Kenwyne Jones, But I think if Zigic's price is right - in the £6 to 7 million range - that he should be on his way soon. Feel free to throw rotten fruit at this stage if you wish. And before anyone asks that was the 11 o'clocker. Burnley fans will already be aware of the Ecuadorian. In a small snippet elsewhere Danny Simpson, once briefly of this parish, is talking to Ipswich about a full-time move from Man U. Not agreed terms yet.
up and rover Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Shearer,Sutton,Sheringham,Cole,Fowler(not for us though),Yorke(not for us though),Ferdinand. These are off the top of my head Anelka and Yakubu to that list
den Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 :angry2: Ohhhhhh Jjjeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Zigic because he's the only one available and will come? You had better be wrong on this one Nicko. The Andrews topic will be nothing on this next one!
tomphil Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Well Crouch is apparently in talks with Sunderland, so perhaps Kenwyn Jones is your man ?!?! He strikes me as a player Sam would go for. I think, with the right service, he'd be great for Rovers. Nick Watch spurs dive in for jones, every player we after down the years redknapp goes in for, no matter what club he's at !!
nicko Posted July 15, 2009 Author Posted July 15, 2009 Ohhhhhh Jjjeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Whoops. At this stage I should use the old line about not shooting the messenger.
den Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Whoops. At this stage I should use the old line about not shooting the messenger. You just knew you would get that reaction didn't you. I mean come on Nicko, the guy, from the couple of games I've seen him play, is downright poor.
rovers1995 Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Nicko, If we get him for £7-8 million what will the other £5-6 million get spent on assuming we had £13 million to spent?
Kelbo Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Shearer,Sutton,Sheringham,Cole,Fowler(not for us though),Yorke(not for us though),Ferdinand. These are off the top of my head Shearer, yes Sutton?? failed at Chelsea,Fowler, only at pool, Sheringham yes and cole yes, Ferdinand really only did it t QPR and Ok Yorke at Villa and ManU But thats not many, the point is, there are no guarantees whoever you buy and the important thing for me is to buy who will fit into the system and therefore playing to their strengths!1 Yorke was a six yard box player and good too, but at Rovers was never played in that role!1 McCarthy is a 6 yard box player, used corectly he would be awesome! Owen, Johnson, Bellamy, Bent, need balls into the channels and wide areas which stretch defences, Crouch, Davies and Roque, play with their back to goal!1 All different players, different styles for differing systems
Backroom Tom Posted July 15, 2009 Backroom Posted July 15, 2009 From a throwaway comment by Nicko earlier today about a potential targets I fear the worst on this one. I just hope its not Zigic. I was due to get one right, shame its about this one. ah well I trust Sam and 8 million should leave 4 million spare still
SYRovers Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Zigic isn't all bad in my most humble opinion. More 'proven' than Janko, and Santa Cruz hardley set the world alight before he came.. AND IT ALSO LEAVES 6-7M FOR SOME CREATIVITY IN THE MIDFIELD... to all the 's...who else would you REALISTICALLY want?
LeChuck Posted July 15, 2009 Posted July 15, 2009 Feel free to throw rotten fruit at this stage if you wish. You saved yourself, from at least, by suggesting Kevin Davies first! Zigic would be a massive relief, and at £6-7 million I'd guess he wouldn't be the only signing. If we could another another good attacker with the rest of the money it could be a good move.
