N'Zonzi - 6ft 3

Samba - 6ft 4

Di Santo - 6ft 4

Zigic - 6ft 8

Didnt Sam say something along the lines of "Its a fact that if your the best attacking team at set-pieces and the best defensive record at set-pieces then that alone will get you in the top 10"??

Wimbledon used to finish quite high up in the premiership using similar tactics

but only 5-6000 had to put up with watching them

Now im realistic it cant be pretty football all the time

under hughes we had to scrap at times but we could play some lovely stuff also

Under Hodgson we played great football.

Ok under Ince we crashed and burned

the season hasn't even started and my excitement has vanished

There are three obvious players that it might be useful to compare Zigic with IMO: Kenwyne Jones, Peter Crouch and RSC (I am not neccesarily claiming they are all similar players, just comparing attributes). Janko would probably fall into this category as well but as he is even more of an unknown quantity than Zigic as he has only scored goals in the Austrian league whereas Zigic has done so in Serbia and Spain.

A lot of people are suggesting he is slow. I am not going to suggest he is a sprinter by any means, he is certainly slower than Jones and Santa Cruz but I would say faster than Crouch. I think people will also find that his running with the ball is better and quicker than they would expect. I would also say he has the advantage of being a better target man than Crouch as he is stronger and is a better header of the ball both in terms of goalscoring and creating chances for others.

Technically he is not all that special but he certainly isnt just a big lump who cannot play football. His finishing is better than Jones in my opinion and I wouldn't say Crouch or Santa Cruz are significantly better, if at all. Zigic is also good with both feet (not that the others are rubbish).

Based on the alleged valuations of Jones and Crouch (assuming £10m+), signing Zigic for significantly less than that does not give us a significantly worse player.

Before I am accused of being Zigic's agent, I should say that money no object, my preference of the three would be Santa Cruz (if he had wanted to be here), then probably Jones (due to age and potential) followed by Zigic and Crouch. I don't think Zigic would be a bad signing at all and I think he would score goals, which is surely the point.

Was just reading up about Nikola Zigic on the net & stumbled across Nikola Kalinic... He's only young & seems to have a growing reputation on the continent, maybe he would be worth a look, as he seems to have been watched by a few big teams, looks a decent prospect too, real poacher in the box, has a decent turn of pace & is also over 6ft, got his first Croatian international cap at a young age too.

Also for the record, I'm not really bothered how we play, as long as we give a good account of ourselves & finish above that claret sh*te!!! If we play percentage football, then thats what we do, I'd rather win than lose, regardless of how we the win... I'm a Rovers fan, proud of it, and I dont give a monkeys what other clubs fans think of us & what we do... WE ARE ROVERS, SUPER ROVERS, WE ARE ROVERS FROM THE NORTH!!!

people who want to see rovers play "sexy" football should look back to the start of last season, ince tried and in some games did suceed, but look where that got us! we are a unfasionable, in your face northern team, and if you ask me thats the way it should be with a team like ours and the way im sure it will be. i would just rather win, and wengers post match interview at ewood is always a good laugh, so i look forward to that next season! :D

Are you a dingle? Iv noticed you have only just popped up on here... and you seem ever so depressed.

We are still recovering from Ince, give Sam time will you - we still have the players to play good football, we just have height & strength to go with it now (if we get the 2 strikers).

So many dooms day people on here lately. <_<

I think people should take perspective: Compare the strikeforce we could have by the start of August with what we had after the last transfer window

NOW

McCarthy/Roberts/Zigic/Vieri/Hoillett/Van Heerden

+ you can add £5/6m on a decent midfielder

vs

THEN

McCarthy/Roberts/A crocked Roque/Emergency strikers (Diouf/Samba)

Id say there's a pretty big contrast.

Just to get out in front of this now in case we sign him (and because I know how badly you bloody English love to mangle foreign names! ;) ), his surname is pronounced ZHI-gich.

The sound that it begins with is like the sound in the middle of "pleasure," or "leisure."

ZHI-gich.

Thanks!

Was just looking at Zigic's Wiki page... he has a very impressive goal scoring record and in the Spanish league as well, which I consider to be AT LEAST on par with the English league. He has a good international record as well.

By the sound of it... he just hasn't been given a proper chance by various managers and could possibly be a bit inconsistent. I think Real Madrid wasn't the best place to utilise his strengths though, or the Spanish league in general. The physicality of the English league should be more suitable to him and if we do play a direct style of play then he will be an excellent signing.

I'm going to say I'm optimistic about signing him as well...

I think very good things good come from an affordable Zigic signing. Assuming it happens, I would be hopeful of good results. Especially with in combination with Viera

Top half here we come!

Patrick Viera is training with us? I think you mean VIERI. I think for 6mill, Zigic would be a good affordable move. We would then have money for a quality midfielder or 2. Zigic at 6mill or Janko at 6mill, either way it would be decent business instead of blowing the entire budget on 1 player

He's a Valencia player not a Madrid one.

If we sign Zigic, we will at least have found a replacement for Kuqi.

Kuqi played the majority of his footballing career for non-top division sides and didn't have a great record for them. Zigic is a proven goalscorer in the top division in Austria and in Spain. Huge difference. I haven't seen Zigic play to be honest, but he doesn't look as bad as some people are making him out to be.

With Serbia likely to be heading to South Africa, I would think that if he signed for us he would be driven to succeed and establish himself in the first team, so he is picked for the World Cup squad, esepcially given his current age.

Best option under 10mil we've looked at so far, IMO.

He's a Valencia player not a Madrid one.

Ah my bad! I have no idea why I wrote Madrid there...

Id be happy with Zigic for around £6m with other players coming in as well as him...For a club like ours it is a good signing, a recognised striker with a decent goal scoring record - ok so he isnt the fastest and doesnt have the most amount of skill but then we arent going to sign a David Villa type player are we? For us to sign an international striker with top flight and Champions League experience for this type of money I think its a good deal and a few on here should ask themselves realistically who were they expecting Villa, Torres, Eto'o??

Ive seen him a few times - though only on the tele - and each time Ive thought 'Christ I wouldnt want to mark him' and if he can instill that in a few PL defenders then all the better!

Initially I was a little disappointed with Zigic being our priority, but you need a little time to think about things.

You can't argue with his goal scoring record, and he produced the goods when out on loan in Spain - which gives me the confidence that he can adapt and isn't unproven in a top league like Janko for example.

I believe he would also be a very good foil for any of our strikers: Benni; Roberts and Vieri. Not too sure where Di Santo would fit in mind, maybe as a Zigic back up?

Being a tall lad, he can do the hard work and win the ball for us. He can knock the ball down for Benni to put them away in the same way that Big Chris did...only better. Same can be said with Vieri upfront. Roberts would be very effective playing off of him too, imagine the difficulty of defending against those two, and even if Roberts doesn't find the back of the net, Zigic's goal record suggests that he would.

The signing makes sense. Let's sort this out and bring in a quality centre midfielder asap.
