So for those doubting me and saying you trusted BS over me! BS is a liar!

Seems V.strange though......it seems like he just cant get fit enough!

Soooooo the striker seach Goes on.....TO BE CONTINUED!

I believe he waddled not walked out. Even the lure of our pies was not a big enough enticement for Christian five bellies. Makes Benni look lithe.

Downing is a good player, but the heat is right on O'Neill just now and goes and does something quirky like this...

There are enough Villa punters around here - without sparking an invasion it would be interesting to know if this is the move they wanted for the new season.

Bad enough to lose their skipper, but to bring in a star signing who won't be ready strikes me as eccentric.

I think MON want to turn him in to the new Barry. When MON took over at Villa Barry was left wing. MON made him a CM and the rest is history. SD has all the qualities to be a CM/AM and he is just 24. Shrewd move I think. OK we can't play him for 2-3 months, but then we do have other players and the window is still open.

This is a strong move, but we need more. Any news for us?

Downing to be the new Barry? Is MON a magician? Downing is a decent winger without having the skill to be anything more - that's what I think. If anyone's going to move in-field (unless he's going to be sold) it's got to by Ashley Young or even Milner.

Sounds like we may just have had a lucky escape with Vieri. He seems to be more temperemental than Benni ever was (or is ever likely to be).

downing will never be the new barry he isnt good enough....

not really bad news about vieri might be good news really if sam decieded to bring the young lad in instead.... any news ref hoffer or anyone else very quiet today....

Downing is probably the most over-rated player in the entire england squad - £10m + £2m, Boro must be laughing their backsides off!

It's all gone quiet in regards to Rovers recently. I can't decide whether that's good or not. Are things moving forwards or not in regards to new signings? Where's Nicko when you need him? :)

hoping for some good news in the next few days. have a feeling sam is up to something now,. negotiating with one or two strikers.. since vieri has left and its been so quiet the last few days..

I agree, plus his comments about a front man after the Split game suggest he is on the ball

My fear is that Sunderland are going to completely screw up our summer. They are going for the same targets as us and because they have the new owners' brass, we are going either to lose out or pay money we otherwise need not have done in transfer fees and wages.

Probably a good reason to get players in on trials so they can have a good look at our facilities. They are one of the few selling points we have at the moment.

Also probably why Rovers tend to keep their cards close to their chests. N'zonzi was being talked about but did anyone actually predict Van Heerden and Jakobsen coming in?

He almost challenges Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the title of most over-rated player on the face of the planet!!

Zlatan is class.

I think he meant to say David Beckham ;)

No one comes close to Beckham for being the most over-rated player on this planet imo.

Ye very true!

If we didnt sell our top players our club wouldn't be able to continue. We have done very well in recent times

by buying cheap and selling for top prices.

Shearer 3.5m - 15m

Duff Academy - 17m

Bellamy (too some extent) 3.5m - 6m

Bentley 3m - 15m

RSC 3.5m - 17/18m

Very good business!

Maybe I am insane, but wouldn't it be better if the players wanted to stay and we had a chance to build a top team with top players that can play great football and challenge for titles, instead of wondering who to replace them with every season?

I mean, I am sure clubs like Chelsea and Man City love the fact that we are simply happy to do "good business" every season and stay out of their way while they trash us and compete at the top, but somehow I want more.

Ibra is absolute class. However, he is still over-rated. I mean, £35m and Eto'o Barca are offering for him, according to reports. For one, he makes Berbatov look as motivated and energetic as Tevez!

Hope Sam can do something clever in the market - soon. I haven't seen anything yet that makes us stronger than last season. Two strikers and quality midfielders still needed.

To be fair den though I don't think you could say we were weaker. Nobody has left that actually played more than a couple of games in the second half of the year, and we've added a 1st or 2nd string RB, a backup winger, a young defensive midfielder who will be on the fringe, and we've got a couple of injured players returning in Dunn and Emerton.

Agree on the two strikers, don't think we'll get a midfielder in without getting rid of one. Ideally Reid if he wasn't injured.

Unfortunately though, I doubt highly that we'll be getting in any more midfielders. We need a quality CM. This N'Zonzi guy better be good, or we're gonna struggle badly next season.

Just thought how tactics similar to Sams was described at coaching seminars I have been on, relevent in so much as it illustrates as to how important the striker/Target man is to the system of play!! As for midfielders, yes we could do with at least one decent one but the important role as you can see would be a target man!!

With 11 players to get past, scoring a goal is a tricky task at the best of times. However, the beauty of counter-attacking football is to use the other team’s desperation to score to your own advantage.

By withdrawing into your own half, but keeping a man or two further up the pitch, the goal is to take the ball off the opponent while they have players committed to the attack and thus out of position. Once you have the ball in your own half, you have more space to deliver a through-ball for your strikers, who will be lurking around the halfway line and will have fewer players to negotiate.

This tactic, while extremely risky and reliant on solid defending, can render impressive results and is often utilised by teams who are defending a lead or field a 4-5-1 formation (meaning the lone striker can get isolated in front of 4 defenders if both sides are set up properly).

Often used to deride ‘boring’ teams, the long-ball style of play is genuine route one football. Rather than spend time on the ball picking the pass, exploiting small gaps in the opposition’s defensive or utilising the flanks, the long-ball is employed as an opportunistic method of attack. By pinging the ball up the field from defense or midfield, the hope is that the strikers will either latch onto the hopeful pass or exploit any mistakes by the defenders. Because the long-ball is dealt with in the air most of the time, any team employing it needs to have a strong target man.

The no 1 target should be Darren Bent, he's got pace, and if he played the full 38 games you wouldnt put it past him getting more than 15 goals. Us or sunderland you choose ;)
