i hope we dont sign alan smith. I also think janko would be a good signing. ive earlier post that i think Negrado would be a good signing. Either would be good signing. if di santo sign then our forward line would be good enough for at least top 10 finish.

spencey7 - We can only play the football that our team allows. There's no use trying to fit square pegs into round holes. If you think our current outfit can play (and survive) in the PL with sweeping, one-touch football, then you're sorely mistaken. We simply can't afford to put a team like that together without serious investment. And right now, the £15m windfall is being used to replace like for like.

As usual, any statement criticising Allardyce's "style" of football is met with "you can't expect us to play like Arsenal", but that argument is UTTER NONSENSE. There are many degrees of footballing philosophy between Bolton 2005 and Brazil 1970.

As for those who claim our current team isn't capable of passing a football? We have good players! It's plain to see that we need a creative midfielder (and have since Bentley left), but players like Dunn, Pedersen, Emerton, McCarthy etc CAN play football. We don't have to play like Arsenal, but why not like Fulham, West Ham or Wigan?

I do think you're doing a disservice to Sam's game. Yes, it's all about %, and he prefers a 6 foot+ focal point up-front, but he also signed players for Bolton like Djorkaeff, Okocha and Stelios to provide that spark in midfield. I'll admit last season some of our football was dire, but it was the necessary evil to drag our asses away from relegation. With a pre-season under the new manager, and some fresh blood, I'm sure the football won't be so crude. Direct, none the less (Liverpool were pretty direct when they trounced Man Utd at OT, btw) but with enough polish to save face.

It wouldn't matter if Allardyce was in charge of Real Madrid and had just signed Kaka, Ronaldo and Benzema - that team would still play hideous, percentages anti-football, it's the only thing he knows how to do.

If you expect anything else next season you are kidding yourself - and you know it.

Don't worry about it Bryan, it's all about that old chestnut trotted out on September 1st -

'KEEP THE POWDER DRY'

spot on. rovers will survive under sam with our current set up, but we won`t be pulling up any trees. as i`ve said before, the club is in limbo awaiting a takeover that`s not on the horizon at all, so at the moment the brief is just survival with as little expenditure as possible.

Don't get me wrong I'd take him. However, first we need to get a striker in to calm the nerves and it depends for what fee/wages smith would be available for.

Agree with the majority of posters. It's all about winning and excitement. If we create lots of chances and win games through playing long ball, than that's ok with me. Just as an example the West Ham home game was blatently long ball tactics, but my word it was exciting. No complaints on my part there.

Incidently Ince's square ball football was NOT attractive. We never looked like scoring, or even creating chances.

The only thing I want to see from my team aside from winning is EFFORT. If the lads work hard to the best of their abilities, I'll not really complain, even if beaten. A lack of effort really annoys me. This shouldn't be an issue with Sam's team.

Nice to see that there are still sensible posters on this messageboard that live in the real world and are representative of fans that actually turn up to watch Rovers play at Ewood as opposed to the deluded eejiiots that whinge and bleat hereabouts.............................................................................

first off sorry about the punctuation in earlier posts am really poor on that front anyway someone asked today regarding Erwin Hoffer I have some news apparantley he scored today in a pre-season friendly against liverpool for Rapid Vienna and they won the game don't know much about him so can't really judge also amid all the doom and gloom this made me laugh from Goal.com the spanish version of their site comparing Vieri with D.Copperfield

Market: Vieri makes David Copperfield and 'disappears' from Blackburn

As if by magic, the 'Bobo' has' evaporated 'from the training camp of the Rovers, where he was exercising to the test. It seems that the Italian does not want to know a possible signing for this team and, presumably, will be searched for life elsewhere.

Nothing here, nothing there ... And the 'Bobo' away! We do not know if you have some magic happens Christian Vieri, but the truth is that it has disappeared from the training of Blackburn. The Rovers must be done to the idea that the Italian no end chips for this machine.

Vieri, the former tip of Spain Atletico Madrid, was tested by exercising a few days at Blackburn. The manager of the Rovers, Sam Allardyce, had said Saturday that the whole "going well", implying that the former Inter Milan and could end up as a free agent signed by the team at Ewood Park.

But that would rule out this possibility. Vieri, 36, has disappeared from the map just as Rovers were preparing to travel to a stage of pre-season in Croatia. The 'Bobo' will not travel with them.

Blackburn, remember, has already lost two points in the first team. Matt Derbyshire has confirmed that Olympiacos will play in the Greek and Paraguayan Roque Santa Cruz was transferred to Manchester City.

Allardyce will have to sign a replacement for at least the low and unless it is David Copperfield, that will not be signing Vieri. The Azzurro does know how to do magic and disappear from the map.

I have to say reading the other version of this article it made me laugh if wasn't so tragic it would be a comedy anyway I guess it better he quits now rather than after 3 days into the season. I hope Sam now gets the top striker he needs.

Indeed.

I think we can all agree that seeing Rovers win by any means is exciting. But all the ones saying "I don't want to see exciting football, I want to see Rovers win" mystify me on two counts.

Firstly - when did it become the accepted wisdom that any attempt to play good football automatically means we will lose? To me, good football is that which creates chances, ot failing that, creates 'off the seat' excitement coming from sheer pace or beating men. I don't see why demanding that increases our chances of losing.

And secondly: what would those people like to see in the 2/3rds of games that we won't win next season? Ugly football in the c26games we won't win is the worst of all worlds.

'Why cant we play like Fulham, West Ham and Wigan?'

There's something you dont hear everyday.

Just please stop complaining. We'd all like Allardyce to have a more flowing footballing attitude, but he doesnt, live with it. As long as we're away from relegation and winning then I dont care and neither should you. You seem more concerned with how we play then the results which come from it. Hughes had a very physical approach to the game - it took him 2/3 years to blend together a squad which combined the physical and flowing elements to the game which made us a decent team. No one is saying that its Allardyce's football or relegation but we all know that Allardyce stands a decent chance keeping us afloat in this division in comparison to a manager who is hell bent on playing pretty football.

Go support Fulham, West Ham or Wigan if you dont like what you see here.

spencer7- if we try to play total passing football with the players we have now(along with the standard our budget allows us to bring in), we will be relegated. our players are of a workmanlike nature and we need a manager that`s style suits that. thankfully sam was available in our moment of need last season, because any other available managerial option would have seen us go down imo. as we don`t have the funds to replace the players we currently have en masse, then it`s better that we have a manager at the helm we know can get the results(with this set of players) to keep us in this league, and possibly significantly better than that.

who would you appoint as an alternative manager that you feel would almost certainly keep us safe in the same way that sam will?

I agree. It makes Warnock look a bit of a tit though, that this happened shortly after his positive comments about him.

This is completely irrelevant to the point I'm making. Half-full/half-empty? What exactly does that have to do with wanting your team to play football that isn't toothache on the eyes......?

(Thanks LDRover and Exiled in Toronto - it's good to know that some people here understand the concept of opinion and don't just get annoyed when they here something they don't agree with.)

No stunning news.

However a member of Rovers management staff has told a mate of mine they have gone off the Alan Smith idea.

All cheer heartily...

There doesn't seem to be any progress on Zigic, probably because the price is too high just now and a key negotiator isn't around.

Sunderland still want Crouch who is asking for silly money, so they won't be letting Jones go in a hurry.

I believe Spurs ARE signing the two Kyles, which is a strange end to an odd saga. Sounds like Levy is on a youth drive again - and Harry might not be too happy about that. They also want Delph.

Got to say it's becoming a dull window.

Just trying to lighten the mood a bit. Wasn't having a pop at the champ. Not really fussed about debating what style of football you enjoy watching to be honest. As you said yourself, everyone is entitled to their opinion (and yes, that includes those who disagree with you sometimes).

In other news, if Alan Smith is the answer for us, what was the question??

Who's the key negotiator? Nicko, who is it that is getting Negredo and the truth about Vieiri please?

personally, i like direct powerful physical football where chances are created with greater frequency. it bores the arse off me to see any team pass a ball 25 times side to side before a single chance is created. i don`t overly enjoy watching arsenal personally much of the time for that reason, keep-ball is a poor substitute to goal mouth action.
