Jones is on the list, but it's still anyone's guess who Rovers actually sign.

Hand on heart I have to say i would be really disappointed if Kenwyne Jones signs, don't rate the player can't see him scoring the goals to make us get a top 10 finish or possibly higher. 17 goals in 62 games is pretty shocking as well and he has injury problems.

Certainly not the player i would look to break our transfer record on. I'm also finding it hard to believe we can't bring in someone like a Gignac or Cardozo who have decent scoring records and i believe have the physical qualities to succeed in this league, for the sort of money we are talking for Jones.

i don`t rate him if we were playing footy on the ground all the time, but we all know under sam we`ll be fairly direct. in that way nobody knows for sure what he`d be like. he could prove very effective.

Kenwyne Jones as always looked impressive when I've seen him. Wouldn't mind if we signed him at all, well if the price tag isn't too high of course.

Someone said that Jones ticks all the boxes, I.E."is tall", "is fast". Was there a box for "can play football"?

Jones reminds me of a young Emile Heskey. He's very fast, strong and is actually skillful (maybe not Heskey like in that way). He may not get many goals - but he would be ideal for Sams style of play and add pace to the team. He'd also potentially have good resale value. If we can afford him - then we should do it. If Bruce gets Crouch and Bent - they must be his preferred strikers - so maybe we could get him.

Jones isn't that old is he - 24? Better than some of the fossilised cadavers we've been getting linked with (no offence Ruud). He'll improve under Benni's tutorship and is a handfull. 20 goal a season man in 2 years.

It was my good self that made those comments... Perhaps I should have stated he can play football, but as he plays professional football in the Premier League, I took that as a indication that everyone would automatically think he can play football!!!

Just for good measure... I believe he also ticks the "CAN PLAY FOOTBALL" box!!! ;)

This is a good shout. At 24 years he will be very good in next two seasons after getting recent experience with Sunderland. An excellent and fit replacement for Derbs and Crocky....and as said "not a cadaver" or a mercenary. Got to remember 6 + 5 rule (which is what Fergie's doing on the quiet).

He looks like he's got everything but looks disinterested when he's playing. Maybe Sam can get the bet out of him.

I'd rather see him at Rovers than some over-priced big risk (Zigic, Janko etc)

What makes you so critical of Jones, Den? I've noticed that you've been rather critical and dismissive of most of the target men that we've been linked with recently - Zigic, Jones, Davies for a start (I seem to recall Crouch as well, but correct me if I'm wrong) - and my own personal impression is that you are slightly biased in your perception of these players simply because you associate them with a 'long ball' style of football.

I don't know an awful lot about Zigic, except that he moved to Valencia with a very big reputation and, while failing to set the world alite there, has since scored goals at another mid-table Spanish side. Davies and Jones, however, I think would be good additions. I'm opposed to Davies largely on the basis that he is too old and the price is too high, but know that he is very good in the air and that he doesn't have a bad all-round game.

I must say, I'm very receptive to the idea of Jones, if only the fee were nearer the £5 - 8m mark. His all-round isn't at all bad from what I've seen, and he will guarantee you goals and assists purely because of his height and strength. Sunderland offered him a fat new contract last season to ward off potential suitors. Of all the names mentioned so far, I'm probably happiest to hear Jones's.

Not sure about Jones.

He's hit & miss - one week great, 2nd week rubbish, 3rd week injured.

Bigger clubs have looked at him so he obviously has something, however it remains to be seen if he can become a 15 goal a season striker in the prem. For £8m or less id be happy - anything more and im not sure we could justify the price.

Don't know where you got that idea about my views on Davies tcj?

I've seen enough of Jones to think that he's not up to much. He looks a threat because of his physique, but when you look at what he actually produces, it isn't much. Zigic? Looks pretty awful from the clips I've seen of him.

As for being biased against long ball football,- well yes I am. Proud of that too. Give me a footballer any day. Give me a Rocky, or a Bellamy any day over these big oafs.

Can't believe that people are turning up their noses at Jones.

Firstly, Sunderland have money so we will not be able to afford him - and he will not want to come to Rovers, a more impoverished club.

Secondly, he has balls, which immediately distinguishes him from Emile Heskey.

And finally, he has skill which puts him on a different planet to Heskey.

I've got Rocky down as a big oaf!

But can he finish? (17 goals in 62 games) Can he keep the injuries off? Enough of this crap about him setting people up, who's going to put them away? Pedersen won't, Roberts won't Benni maybe if he keeps off the McDonald's and Sam decides to play him, big ask asking the young Di Santo if he comes, Dunny will be he fit? Same with Reidy.

If Sam wants a targetman type of striker fair enough, but there are better ones out there with better goalscoring records and would cost less or the same as Kenwyne Jones. Yes they play abroad but every signing is a risk, i think the likes of a Gignac or a Cardozo who play in reasonably decent leagues and have the physical qualities 6 foot plus, strong, can finish could do a job in this league.

Sorry, I must have you confused with somebody else in regards to Davies. Out of interest, do you feel similarly about Crouch as you do the likes of Jones and Zigic, or have I got that wrong as well?

My point was more that I feel you're biased against the players because of their association with that type of game. Heskey and Crouch are examples of big, tall players, formidable in the air, but who can easily play in a side that doesn't employ long-ball football. I feel the same about Jones. I thought he looked really good at Sunderland - and at Sheffield Wednesday for that matter - before his injury, and neither were long-ball specialists.

Don't get me wrong, I'd have Roque or Bellamy over Jones any day, the latter in particular, but a player's physique is just so important these days, regardless of the particular type of football his team employs, and I'm not sure that's something you perhaps appreciate highly enough: it is an asset, not a hindrence. If we can't afford a player with great technical skill, then it is an even more valuable consideration.

Why take a punt though when we've just received c. £21m in transfer fees?

We won't be spending all of the money we have received though.

We have to think about the long-term financial health of the club!
