Are you sure he's referring to the position on the field and not just on the mental-side? English is not my first language, but to me it sounds more like that Sam's waiting for Salgado to be a Hierro-type leader with influence in the pitch and dressing room.

Budha,

I think both are correct, you are right in thinking of his leadership and influence, but I understand he means in midfield also!!

He wants him to cover RB, LB and CM.

“He has trained 24 days with Real Madrid and played one and a half games with Real Madrid this summer,” said Allardyce. “He is very, very fit and there is the potential of playing him in one or two positions. Right back, left back or centre midfield. "

OK, given that we now have Jacobsson and Givet as full backs, along with our two Centre backs = a very much defensive back four, it would suggest to me that when all the players are available, we will go with a 4 - 3 - 3 formation!!

Especially if Sams comments of him playing Salgado in a Hierro type role, which was a holding player in a midfield 3!

Any thoughts on this?

It does look that way, playinga three in the middle is a quick fix for a weak midfield like ours. But you need 3 available all the time so Grella, Dunn and Reid, well one of them will have to stay fit all season for it to really work out. Wonder what signing Salgado means for Grella??

It'll be interesting to see what he does on saturday as neither Benni or Big Jase are really lone striker material.

Interesting negotiating tactics- didn't we receive an offer of £1.6m for Gally?

Any proof of that bid?

We need to get rid of him, he isnt going to do anything for us, so lets ship him out, save on wages and protect ourselves incase we got it wrong.

Nah not yet, the board are gonna be stood with collection buckets at the game tomo, and we we all copper up enough, we'll sign him 'Early next week.'

Something tells me he might cost a little bit more than the 32p and a button we'd raise from a whip round at Ewood.

Still, every little helps.

Think one of them may be either Wheater or Huth, I seem to recall O'Neill was in the crowd for Boro's opener against Sheff Utd last Friday nite.

Wheater is one big Sam should be going for regardless of the pot being empty.

 to get rid of gally for a 33 yr old is insane :o

Gally - cant cut it at this level, look ok at Championship clubs but no more and will bugger off for nothing at the end of the season.

v's

Salgado - multi trophy winning, vastly experienced ex-Real Madrid player known by football fans the world over and avaliable on a free ?!

I agree, the insanity of it is obvious!!

I dont care about the ages, Salgado ultimately offers more than Gally ever will and even if we only get one season out of him its a hell of a lot more than we have had from Gally!

<_< we have already brought in two defenders,we need a midfielder,33yrs old = past it

For a supporter of Rovers who has seen Tugay consistently hold back the years, you're a right misery guts, aren't you?

Paolo Maldini retired at 40, and if he's knees hadn't been completely wrecked, he'd have kept playing forever.

Being pushed out of the Real Madrid squad to be able to afford all those new Galacticos doesn't seem a reason not to sign up such an experienced and talented player on a free.

He's proved he's fit and he's got the skill and experience and we can't afford to buy anyone.

;) so we don't need a midfielder,do you think this guy from real madrid going to come for 20k a week

I'd love a decent midfielder, but we've got about 15 mediocre ones already that nobody wants to buy. Anyone offering to give Steven Reid a piggyback (I'm sure he can't walk two yards anymore without dislocating a knee/pelvis/spine) round to clubs and see if they'll give us 50p for him seeing has he's hardly played in the last 2/3 years? If he does string more than two games together, he was never amazing in the first place so I can't see him being better now. And god knows who's idea it was to keep Andrews when Fulham were offering real money to buy him with.

So a a high calibre defender who would raise the profile, morale and quality of the squad and make room for other competent players like Warnock and Emerton to play midfield, would be the next best thing for me when we've not got two pennies to rub together to buy anyone, nevermind 'the next Tugay'.

We really do need a midfielder and Im sure that Sam knows this and if he has seen something in and beleives that Salgado could do a job in the holding role then Im happy to trust him - as has been said Hierro and Campo werent DM when they signed but did a good job under him!

As for the wages, Ive no doubt they would be considerably more that £20k but the experience at the top level that he brings to a team like Rovers is invaluable and he would be well worth the money if you ask me.

I would rather get rid of Gally and put his wages into the pot to sign Salgado rather than miss out on him completely....
