incecticide Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 interesting to see people suggesting we sell mgp to raise money for a central midfielder. we already have funds for a midfielder, and if we sold morten we'd need another left winger - one who contributes as many assists will be hard to find. someone explain why we should do this?!
Ricky Posted August 4, 2009 Author Posted August 4, 2009 ummm.....because we dont have funds for a CM Read pack a few posts to sams comments

Dave S Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Really? Can you remember any player ever signing a new contract with a club, and then days later signing with a different club? Clive Allen signed for Arsenal then went to Crystal Palace Two months later without playing a game. Similar thing with Dave Unsworth. It is not a regular event but at the same time not unusual. Andrews has the security of a better contract, from a verbal agreement with John Williams. If anyone wants to buy Andrews then a suitable compensation transfer fee for a premier player would have to be made. If he was on low wages then a purchasing club could argue that we wanted a decent transfer fee for one of our lower paid players. At the same time if Andrews is sold then he will be in a stronger position to negotiate a better contract. Good for both parties. If he stays he may end up a squad player but cannot complain regarding his terms and conditions.
incecticide Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Certainly.. Because he's crap. Nice balanced explanation... Although falls down under scrutiny - his stats tell us he's a consistent provider of assists, his opta stats show how hard he works back (which helps the team and in particular Warnock and Givet who IMO both look better as a result of Morten's hard work helping out) - and a key factor is that he's rarely ever injured, a relative luxury in our midfield. We all know about his goals issues, but that doesn't make him crap, it means he has something he needs to improve on. If you still think he's crap, what makes you think we'll get good money for him? Despite all the stories of Spurs being interested in the past with their daft transfer policy, they've never lodged a bid to my knowledge... These are all examples of a player signing for a new club then moving on, not signing a new contract with his existing club and being transferred as quickly. I can't think of a single example of this... Although I wouldn't be surprised if there was one.

Doing confirms that he is, actually, totally crap. We wouldn't get 'good' money. £3m or so I reckon. And a huge wage off the bill as some prat gave him £30k a week to do sod all for four years.

67splitscreen Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Can't remember the name, one of our very own, brought into the club on a monday and sold on the wednesday, so to say, never kicked a ball, think it was in the early 70's. Kelbo or someone will fill in the details.
dazmaz Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 but how is MGP crap? am i watching a different player to everyone else on here, okay so he hasnt played as good for the past few seasons but he is still a kep player to our starting 11. since 2004 MGP has played 198 scored 33 and has provided 39 assists, 07/08 he played 46 scored 6 and provided 8 assists last season (08/09) played 34 scored 1 and 8 assists. and his best season for us is the 06/08 season with 49 apps 8 goals and 12 assists NOTE all figures include PL, Cup and Europe add to that the cover he provides going back. crap player? hes better than most wingers out there

We wouldn't get 'good' money. £3m or so I reckon. And a huge wage off the bill as some prat gave him £30k a week to do sod all for four years. Peel the onion.... what sort of quality midfielder do you think we'd get for £3m? Not that we'd be able to spend the full £3m, some would be swallowed into the club as usual (I'm all for this by the way, help with running costs, reduce debts, secure the future of the club) and some would be used to cover the player's wages. So you're probably talking more like £1.5m - another Keith Andrews. After that, we still need a replacement left winger. When I use my eyes and watch Pedersen every home game I see a player putting the team first and get frustrated when he doesn't always produce the goods. I'd rather keep faith with him, knowing what he's capable of, than take £3m for a player we paid £2.5m for and don't need to sell.
den Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 These are all examples of a player signing for a new club then moving on, not signing a new contract with his existing club and being transferred as quickly. What's the difference? Any player joining a new club has just signed a contract. Jonno [i think it was] was using the argument that Fulham gave up on Andrews because he had just signed a new contract and that they knew no-one moved in that situation. He can't accept that Fulham simply didn't value him very highly. That's the argument isn't it, or have I got that wrong?
waggy Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Givet is effectively Warnocks LB replacement. Warnocks a very good player but an offer in excess of 10 million would be too much to turn down. I was amazed he won player of the season to be honest, there was a period before christmas where he was our worst player, his display and attitude away at Wigan is amongst the worst I've seen in a Rovers shirt. here here, and the way he blamed nelsen for adebeyour scoring at the bburn end was unbelievable

The difference is that one happens quite often, seemingly, and the other doesn't. Signing a new contract is a pretty clear message that you're not interested in moving, if he had been angling for the move to Fulham he wouldn't have sent that message out. Good on him I say.
Fife Rover Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Yes, and he was only transferred to Rovers three games earlier - Bobby Bell!!By gum Kelbo...you've got a long memory. You are quite right as far as you have gone, but maybe you should have added that he didn't stay very long either! He was shifted on to Ipswich after making just 2 appearences for us. And it was not because he was no good; far from it he was TOO good for us and immediately attracted the attention of a very good 1st division Ipswich Town, and our manager Ken Furphy did a bit of wheeling and dealing to make a tidy profit on the player.
Gally Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 I think worst player is going OTT. Away at Wigan he was torn to absolute shreds by Valencia in the first 20 minutes, as bad as I've seen any full back, but that aside I can't think of any shockers he's had. I think most people would agree he was the best out of a bad bunch, but he still deserved the player of the year by some margin for me.
langhoblue Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 That Allardyce---------hasn't got a clue has he? Its not as if he's had any experience of managing at this level either. Do you think the midfield is good enough?
mark Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Do you think the midfield is good enough? Do you think the transfer window is closed?
langhoblue Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Do you think the transfer window is closed? No - but Allardyce said that's it for signings now - money all gone
deftangel Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 A central midfielder is going to be the difference between upper mid table or lower mid table. Or to put it another way, 6-7 places. I can not see us challenging the top half without one. It's been a glaring weakness for far too long. 7 places is almost 3m in extra prize money, not to mention doing better in cups etc. It's incredibly short sighted to bring nobody in with our injury record at CM.

He won my vote on the basis of his tackle to stop Andy Johnson putting fulham 2-0 up. That one moment was the moment we stayed up imo.
TimmyJimmy Posted August 4, 2009 Posted August 4, 2009 Sometimes you have to forget statistics and use your eyes. Doing confirms that he is, actually, totally crap. Sometimes you have to forget statistics and rely on subjective bias and blinkered pig ignorance, oh I see that was your point. I always found that the dimmer someone was the more black and white were their opinions, no shades of grey in your world eh matey? No player is crap because a) they clear the first hurdle of being a professional ie they get paid for their work he's a professional player who plays in the best league in the world, so that's another hurdle cleared, and oh yes, c) he plays for Rovers who in my book are are pretty damn good club so he clears that one as well. If you took a breathe once in a while and actually looked at what a player was doing you'd see a lot of work going on off the ball. You'd also see that a side without him in it did not do that well, so things don't always get better when your hate figures are left in the changing room. There may well be better players out there but that doesn't make him crap. Those better players cost mega bucks so the best point you can make is that he is not as good as the players we cannot afford, well duh, good point. Remind me again, exactly why do you support this club?
