SYRovers Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Media reports suggest that David Nugent will be sold off by Portsmouth at a knock-down price. He would be a tremendous buy for any Premier League club with a manager capable of reviving his career. How about us? Sell McCarthy for 5m to some Euro club, buy a young England international desperate to save his career and pocket significant change to help us buy a mid-fielder. Are you for real? Nugent has been found out in the Premiership, whilst McCarthy when fit, is on his day one of the best strikers in the division..Keep him fit and we will see the Benni that attracted envious gazes from the bridge..

A cup of beans Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 He was definatley the best player on the pitch last night. His set pieces were slightly woeful, but his ability and eye for a pass were undoubted. He looked a very good footballer witha good footballing brain. people are going overboard about him. he only stood out cos he was the only player on the hibs side that decided he was going to be positive. the game wasnt at all competitive, players were given time and space. i wonder how many of the people getting excited and suggesting we sign him, thought villenueva was too lightweight and not up to the english game ? on nugent.... feel a bit sorry for him. portsmouth have mostly played him wide instead of in his natural position of centre forward.
Stuart Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 So why would we pay £4m for him then? RSC - 3.5m, Benni £2.5m - Nugent £4m?? Not suggesting for one minute we should sign Nugent but 4M is the new 2M in the current market so you aren't comparing apples with apples. Just a note too. Second consecutive day with no Alan Nixon story in the Mirror. Holiday or something more sinister?
doctorryan Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 25 year old Rothen?? Jesus, I wish he was 25! He turned down a chance to go to ManU around that time (2004 - he was actually 26) for £5m, opting instead to go to PSG (club he grew up following I believe). Would probably cost us £15m if he were 25 now.
Amo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Any chance of us making a move for Niko Kranjcar? I wonder how much it will take to tempt Pompey's frail hand.

Yes I'm for real.Davies was a failure till Sam took hold of him.

unleaded Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Rovers are linked to French Midfielder Hassan Yebda of Benfica.........Box to Box(what ever that means)...........We need a creative player not a box to box one........
Amo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Rovers are linked to French Midfielder Hassan Yebda of Benfica.........Box to Box(what ever that means)...........We need a creative player not a box to box one........ Aren't Gerrard and Lampard considered box-to-box midfielders?
savage8 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Wasn't our very own Keith Andrews described as "box to box"?
joey_big_nose Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Wasn't our very own Keith Andrews described as "box to box"? To be fair he is. Box to box is just a type of player. Doesn't mean your any good!
joey_big_nose Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Any chance of us making a move for Niko Kranjcar? I wonder how much it will take to tempt Pompey's frail hand. I suppose the only reason no one has bought him yet is that he is injured at the moment? I like him a lot as a player but again he is not really the sort we need at the moment. We need a central play maker type, Krankjcar sits a bit too far up the pitch for us I think. We need someone who can move the ball around from further back. Plus Pompey will know they can get 10m+ for him. They are in trouble, but not mugs.
G Somerset Rover Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Plus Pompey will know they can get 10m+ for him. They are in trouble, but not mugs. Are you sure Joey? They have just signed Mokoena remember?
Hughesy Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Gunning & Marrow have both gone out on loans.....
Grez Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 i'm just waiting for joey barton to arrive in final week of august. The season tickets will have been sold by then, so the signing will not put off new st holders. temperament apart, he is the kind of player we need to add strength to midfield and put some presence in there. We've had no-one since sav. Grella is a croc so don't bank on him
Sparky Marky Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Totally Agree.....Barton would be a fantastic signing....we should move before someone like Bolton get him....
AggyBlue Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Gunning & Marrow have both gone out on loans..... Gunning to Tranmere and Marrow to Oldham. Both have looked quite capable from what I've seen this pre-season.
Hughesy Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I agree on Barton, plenty on here however dont!! SSN - 11.42 According to reports in L'Equipe, Blackburn Rovers are making a concerted effort to sign Paris St Germain midfielder Jerome Rothen.
Amo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Whatever ability Barton has, he is a complete liability with his temperament. He isn't just a hot-headed player, he's a thug who's blown every chance afforded him. Again, people reject Bentley but would welcome Barton? Riiiiiiiiight.

Both would waltz into our team as it is.
Hughesy Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 People go on about missing that 'bite' in midfield, the 'savage' role - Barton is that man! He also adds in some goals, and has a decent passing range on him too!!
Amo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Beggers can't be choosers right now. Both would waltz into our team as it is. Bentley got his head down and did well for the club. Less chance of him going missing on a prison sentence. Btw, all this talk about Rothen being a new playmaker - isn't he a left-midfielder?
S15 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I've had my reservations about Barton, as any straight thinking human being would, but unfortunately, as far as the player goes, he is EXACTLY what we need right now. Plus, we've had a severe lack of headcases since we sold Savage, Dickov, Bellamy, Neill and Todd. All in all, I think though Diouf was a good start, it's important Sam gets Barton in ASAP. Ps, is Hot Toddy still playing? Bentley got his head down and did well for the club. Less chance of him going missing on a prison sentence. Btw, all this talk about Rothen being a new playmaker - isn't he a left-midfielder? Yes, yes he is. And we desperately need one of those, as we're yet to replace Duff.
Amo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 People go on about missing that 'bite' in midfield, the 'savage' role - Barton is that man! He also adds in some goals, and has a decent passing range on him too!! Manchester City - 130 apps 5 goals Newcastle United - 32 apps, 2 goals. Yeah, he'll add in some goals all right.
greggyk Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Plus- Barton's not played a full game in years!!! He's probably past it!
