S15 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Plus- Barton's not played a full game in years!!! He's probably past it! He'll fit right in...

AggyBlue Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 People go on about missing that 'bite' in midfield, the 'savage' role - Barton is that man! Those types of players don't seem to be tolerated in the PL anymore. Far too many ballet dancers and fairies for my liking, too many refs that don't know what's a foul and what's not a foul but that's another topic
Hughesy Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Manchester City - 130 apps 5 goals Newcastle United - 32 apps, 2 goals. Yeah, he'll add in some goals all right. Hmmmmmmm you sure?!?!?!? Man City 05/06 - 31 games, 6 goals Man City 06/07 - 33 games, 6 goals Forget Newcastle - he has been in and out like a yo-yo and they are a joke.
Sparky Marky Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Barton isn't just agression...He's an expansive midfielder who can link with the wide players and forwards alike...don't forget, he was a england player before all this shennanigans with prison etc.... He would be the best player in our midfield by a mile, and had he not been a bad boy, would probably command fees around the £15m-£20m mark....if we can get him cheap, it's a no-brainer.

Did Dunny even rack up 12 games in that period?
Amo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Forget Newcastle - he has been in and out like a yo-yo and they are a joke. Or perhaps he found the ideal club for a man of his 'talents?' And again, are people conveniently forgetting this guy is a thug? Nothing like Savage at all.
mellison24 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Altho Rothen is a left-mid, he is often used (with gud results) in the centre. In fact he is used MORE in the centre if I'm not mistaken. On the wing, he is the type to cross early due to lack of pace. This leads me to believe that when used in the middle, he sits and passes. Perhaps a Tugay-esque role? On the subject of Barton, I can't stand the man. But footy-wise, he is what we need. I would take him on the condition that he does anger management and has various other clauses inserted related to his temperament. (I am told Kalinic has a temper too, so we best be careful where both are concerned)
joey_big_nose Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Bentley got his head down and did well for the club. Less chance of him going missing on a prison sentence. Btw, all this talk about Rothen being a new playmaker - isn't he a left-midfielder? I think he will play centrally for us as a playmaker. Might even go straight into the Tugay role dropping off behind the midfield. I doubt we will be using him out wide at all.
Eddie Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 We need a quality midfielder. Not Rothen, not Barton.
mellison24 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Rothen would play in the centre-left. Talk about compromise!!
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 We need a quality midfielder. Not Rothen. Is he really that bad Eddie? What about Joe Ledley? Left footed and can play wide or in the centre.
G Somerset Rover Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I would take him on the condition that he does anger management and has various other clauses inserted related to his temperament. (I am told Kalinic has a temper too, so we best be careful where both are concerned) Throw Dioufy into the mix and we'll have our own version of Fight Club! I'm starting to warm to the Rothen idea simply because I'm scared stiff of seeing Andrews and N'Zonzi take on the likes of Gerrard/Mascherano and Lampard/Essien. At least Rothen has footballing ability (that's no slight on N'Zonzi as he's not played a competitive game for us so cannot yet be judged).
joey_big_nose Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 We need a quality midfielder. Not Rothen, not Barton. We'll, I think your going to have to get used to Rothen. Established interest, he is potentially free, Nicko has confirmed that we are interested in him provided PSG don't demand a fee. IMO it's going to happen unless PSG don't budge on price.
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Joe Ledley has only 12 months left on his contract. Hull are reported to be interested in him: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ity/8180065.stm
farhanology Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Tell us more about Hassan Yebda, anyone? What I gleaned from wiki - Portuguese Liga's player of the month in Sept 2008.

47er Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 I've had my reservations about Barton, as any straight thinking human being would, but unfortunately, as far as the player goes, he is EXACTLY what we need right now. Plus, we've had a severe lack of headcases since we sold Savage, Dickov, Bellamy, Neill and Todd. All in all, I think though Diouf was a good start, it's important Sam gets Barton in ASAP. Ps, is Hot Toddy still playing? Andy Todd playing in Australia. Perth Glory I think.

Ps, is Hot Toddy still playing? I agree with you on both points - great player but a complete nutter.... BTW Andy Todd is now at Perth Glory in Australia, will be playing in first game of season this weekend against Adelaide united If you're looking for an Australian Football team to follow then look no further than BRFC - Brisbane Roar FC! My adopted town & my substitute BRFC... Will post more details somewhere else if anybody is interested as don't want to go off topic, but Craig Moore is current captain of the Roar... let me know if anybody wants more info on the other BRFC
M2XLY Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 NYRON NOSWORTHY FROM SUNDERLAND... anyone else heard anything about this?
LeChuck Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 NYRON NOSWORTHY FROM SUNDERLAND... anyone else heard anything about this? http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11677_5475836,00.html We're mentioned as being interested, along with Portsmouth, Stoke, West Ham, Aston Villa and Everton. I can't see us being interested unless Zurab leaves, we don't need another defender.

It amazes me that this a large part of the supporters are happy to see us looking to solve our central midfield problem by bringing in a left midfielder. I still also don't see why PSG would let him go on a free, we are not the only team interested and they aren't that desperate to get rid of him. He'd still have a role to play in their squad if he doesn't move, even if it isn't as a key player. He simply isn't an answer to any of our questions. We'd be better off using Emerton, or shifting MGP in the middle. The guy can't really cut it out wide in Ligue 1 anymore, how anyone thinks he can manage a central role in a faster and more physical league (things that were never Rothen's strengths) is beyond me.

I don't really have an opinion as i haven't seen too much of him, but I was under the impression that we are not getting him into be physical or quick. He is supposed to do the Tugay/Carrick/Mikel thing - move the ball around, find a pass.
G Somerset Rover Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 From Sky Sports: 13.57 Reading boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed midfielder James Harper has held talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers over a potential move. He's not the creative man that we're after, but if we didn't have the crock list that we have with similar players on it then he would perhaps have been a good buy. A decent box to box midfielder
