roversinmyblood Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I remember the last defender Sam got from Real, turned out to be a top midfielder, Ivan Campo!! My thoughts too

texasrover Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 i wonder if this Salgado thing came around before or after the last game where samba and nelsen were both injured... in regards to rothen, i'm glad that one is still alive. sounds like he wants to prove himself.
1864roverite Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 On a side note - Nicko has said that Burnley are trying to sign Bikey from Reading. I think he'd be a cracking signing for us and I'd love for us to get in before Burnley. He has pace and power and for a small bloke is superb in the air. What utter tripe. On your Bikey is trash. He couldnt and wouldnt ever make it into our starting 11.
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 If you ask a Rovers fan “What is the area that needs strengthening the most?” or “What would you like to see our remaining budget spent on?” I can guarantee you the vast majority would say the central midfield is the priority, not right back or not the left wing. Yes it would be nice to strengthen in other areas, but there needs to be a priority on what needs to be sorted out first. Rothen, Salgado maybe nice additions but we still wouldn’t have addressed the obvious weakness we have in central midfield.
brfc_jonesy Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I honestly think that Salgado would be a shrewd bit of business. The geeza has been at one of the best teams in the world for years. He would bring bags of experience to pass on to youngsters and will only improve our defence. Even if its only for a couple of years or whatever. Fair play to you Big Sam, right behind this possible signing 100%
Iceman Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Iceman we couldnt possibly play that back 4 with Adebayor up front! They are 4 midgets as defenders go! Agree completely mate, however with both Samba and Nelsen a doubt we might not have many other options. Salgado has loads of experience, and Givet has been doing well as a centre half. Zurab is a good player, but i wouldnt consider him after the performance against Dundee
Backroom Tom Posted August 10, 2009 Backroom Posted August 10, 2009 Doing what they do best http://www.blackburn.vitalfootball.co.uk/a...le.asp?a=165350 At least they state the source this time. Does anyone think young Hoilett will feature much this season or is it too early for him yet? Sam seems to have postive words about him and he could be deployed in a couple of rolls, if he was to impress out wide then maybe MGP would be on his way as we'd have Junior, EVH and possibly Rothen for LW.

OJRovers Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Thinking about it kind of makes sense. We could have this back 4 against City Robbo Jacobsen Salgado Givet Warnock Lets hope so

rovers1995 Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Why have these pieces of news been available to read before 11 o'clock. I presume that was the 11o'clocker Nicko?
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 If you get someone who can pass ball, give a delivery from set play, switch play, then they are good midfield players!! Just because a wide player may have those qualities it doesn't mean they necessarily can do the same in the centre. Its a completely different role and different demands are required. For one thing you need to have a very decent engine to play in the centre.
Craigman Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Why have these pieces of news been available to read before 11 o'clock. I presume that was the 11o'clocker Nicko? The Mirror seem to have a new layout to their website, so I am assuming that they are updating their website earlier now ?

Its a completely different role and different demands are required. For one thing you need to have a very decent engine to play in the centre. Hate to bring this up again, but a certain MR Beckham controlled an international match doing just that!! I do understand roles, I am trained to teach them and for a good experienced player, a midfielder there to pick out the passes and hit them accurately, no problem. Alan Smith showed that on Saturday and Rothen is better quality than Alan Smith!
LeChuck Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Signing Salgado would almost guarantee that Emerton will be in central midfield when he's fit, which would definitely help solve the problem there. He's not Tugay replacement, but how many teams actually play with a Tugay type player? Emerton's box-to-box running could be just as valuable in a different way.
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Err yeah, he at no point stated that someone couldn't move from the wing to the middle, he just said it takes different qualities. * Aimed at Kelbo not LeChuck.
unleaded Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Question for Nicko is why on earth has The Mirror online broken this news at this time of the day........How many people are not going to bother buying the paper version now........Makes no sence or has Sir Alan got a new job as a Public servant......Very nice site tough. No More 11 O clockers I think as well............
Anti-Dingle-Brigade Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 That's a bit stupid if I'm honest. Surely the Mirror are just giving all their rivals a chance to write some late reports and nab all their stories?
RibbleValleyRover Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Err yeah, he at no point stated that someone couldn't move from the wing to the middle, he just said it takes different qualities. * Aimed at Kelbo not LeChuck. Some probably can, Beckham has a decent workrate on him and he doesn't need loads of pace to play that playmaker role. There are plenty of wide players in the prem and in other leagues that would be an absolute disaster if they were played in central midfield.
John Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Agree that most of the time Emerton has looked ok/good in central midfield. Still not sure on his distribution and he is quite one dimensional with his attacking play. He does bring 'energy' to an important role and never stops working. Maybe we just have to accept that signing someone who can pass the ball and be creative is not possible with our budget...?
Iceman Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 If we sign Salgado, then the image of the club will be further enhanced. Im excited by this potential signing. Im sure Nicko will explain it all, as well as why the mirror has this story up at this time
Flopsy Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I remember him being one of the few Real defenders who actually fitted the description. What we lose in youthful athleticism, I hope we gain in experience and nouse. Plus lovely hair
Steve Moss Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 If you ask a Rovers fan “What is the area that needs strengthening the most?” or “What would you like to see our remaining budget spent on?” I agree with you. On the other hand, if Sam thinks Salgado, Rothen and/or etc., is a better move, then I am willing to trust Sam's judgement over mine. I am sure he is well aware of the club's stregths and weaknesses (to a greater degree than anyone on this board) and is taking steps to address them as best he can. He's done an outstanding job so far and I'm betting that he'll continue to make the trades which keep us on the right side of the relegation zone and maybe even a top 10 place.

What we lose in youthful athleticism, I hope we gain in experience and nouse. Plus lovely hair And a mental instability our right backs have lacked since Neill left.
