I suspect "the problem" is that the wage bill has been reduced scarcely at all and vertainly not by the 10% target. 5 players went out including 3 big earners (Tugs, Oo and Cruz) but 6 have come in - and I doubt Givet and Kal are on buttons wages. Also will Salgado take a relegation hit to his money and what about the length of the contract?

And that is one very good question.

My guess is Sam has been told he has to sell before he can buy.

We all complain when players are sold without having a replacement ready, here is the reverse scenario and it's not always pretty.

You also have to think that Sam is not only considering on who to bring in now and add to the wage bill but who out of the likes of Dunn/Reid/Pedersen are going to get their contract renewed.

so it would appear that because of our poor finish last year and the compo handed to Ince we're up the creek with no paddle with only the Roque money for buoyancy?

Not quite up the same creek as NUFC, Pompey, WHU etc, nor the same as MU and Lpool either. 'Cut your coat according to your cloth' has never been more important than it is currently, 2009 is not the time to incur debt imo.

You would think by the randomness of what is going on that Sam is lining up players for when/if we manage to get some off the wage bill.

We are carrying far too many players.

True, Rovers have 26 players plus 3 others on loan, the LT today suggests players will have to leave. Surely big Sam knows this, expect we'll just have to watch events unfold between now and the end of the month.

I take it nicko, the 11 o'clocker wont get the juices flowing ;)

Nothing new Rovers-wise, so I was going to pass on that one...apart from the news about the disappearing trialists earlier on...I think tomorrow will be a more revealing day.

I think this has nothing to do with our poor finish. Its been happening every summer. We havent spent money since the heydays of Souness. Its just getting tighter and tighter.

My question is if they want to tighten the strings why do they invite people like Salgado and Rothen over?

Can anyone be bothered working out each summer's net transfer spend for teh last ten years?

I suspect it would make interesting reading.

My bets are Ped's and Gallagher will go. or Warnock will end up at villa for £6m :glare:

for me, sam is showing his managerial skill in that he is lining up the team he wants, showing he is prepared to sell to spend (rsc & derbs) and then putting the pressure on jw to back him.

Jw is going to have to work for his money this year and try to manage a stubborn, yet ambitious managers expectations, whilst pushing a very reluctant trust to invest in a dream that for the first time in 15 years is being bought into by 18500 ST Holders.

A bit of guess work but the two names which seem to keep appearing and look the most likely to happen are Rothen and Salgado, for some reason though which seems to be financial, neither have happened yet.

My bet is that Rothen is dependant on Pedersen leaving (Due to his contract expiring in a year and being out of form, tonight's Norway game might change Sam's views or speed up any potential buyers perhaps)

Salgado is dependant on Warnock leaving. (Givet would be first choice LB, Salgado at RB and then Jacobsen providing cover at rightback with Salgado moving to left back if Givet is injured.)

I don't think Sam would let both go and is perhaps mulling over which deal to go for.

In an ideal world I expect Sam is hoping he can keep Warnock and Pedersen while also bringing in both Salgado and Rothen while offloading the likes of Gallagher, possibly Zurab to raise the funds. Difficult offloading fringe players for much of a fee unfortunately.

Zurab's name keep being put forward as a possible departure. However, we are pretty short of centre backs as it is having only: Givet, Nelsen and Samba - who else can adequately play there? Surely we need 4 centre backs in the squad?

peds for 4m (2 goals against scotland does not make a good player)

gally for 500k

warnock for 8m+

i'd be happy if we could do business along those lines, i'm dreaming now but dunn/reid/McCArthy and grella off the wages with 2 quality replacements would make for the greatest summer of business possible in my view and leave us with a manageable 20-21 man squad of reliable quality.

Reality check please.

Lets not get too carried away by Pedersons double salvo, he was playing against a 10 men skillwise ravaged jocks best 11, the worst ever Scottish team to take to the pitch as long as I can remember.

As for Villa and Warnock ? I have watched Johnson and Barry closely tonight, Warnock beats them hands down for effort and skill. Now they cost £17m and £12m respectively, so on going rates Warnock must be valued at nearer £10m than £6m. If MON thinks that a £4m offers is suitable then he can go and jump into the Leeds and Liverpool. He should really be looking at a player swap deal involving cash.

Rovers require a central midfielder. There is an opportunity to snaffle either Reo-Coker or Sidwell whilst at the same time getting some cash in. Rovers should take that line IMO. It solves a big problem for us and also allows at least 2 cheaper players coming in and allowing Rovers to dispel of the services of Gally and any other deadwood left loitering around Ewood.

Its the perfect time to streamline the club.

Virtually no debt. Operating a tight budget with a streamlined squad that has skill may allow us a top 10 finish, bringing in more prize pot money, it may allow the club to keep its current amount of ST holders happy, even increasing it whilst at the same time increasing the opportunity for future investment.

Clearly Rovers are in the process of keeping the club solvent whilst improving on the field and there is no reason to upset the way the club is being run.

Back to the proposed sale of Warnock. Rovers have the opportunity to use him as a major rebuilding tool for the club structure. Its a sign of the times that Rovers may have to sell to improve, its a fact of life and one we shouldnt be afraid of taking.

Warnock out, Sidwell or NRC in, Rothen in plus 1 other. Gally out and the money factor is equalised to a big fat ZERO outlay.

Sidwell in, Warnock out, books balanced, would be beyond our wildest dreams.

Why do people want to sell Warnock for whatever amount of money?

It doesn't matter how much we get for him, it wont be put in the transfer kitty. At best we may well be letting a very good player leave to be replaced by two free players who are past it - not what I want to see happen.

We have been a selling club for years now. I don't think we would have had any transfer funds at all for the last few years if we hadn't sold players first - Duff, Dunn, Bellamy, Bentley, Santa Cruz.......Warnock? All sold for more than we spent. Wasn't Givet's money supposed to be what we didn't end up spending on Villanuea i.e. last years transfer budget?

I think that the accountants must have found a hole in the accounts or the bank is getting desperate for cash.

Very, very worrying.

For me personally we have too many squad players who simply arent good enough to make us better and those are the kind of players that should be shifted out. However much I like Reidy, he wasnt half the player he was after his last injury, so I dont know how much he will even offer after this one. Unlucky lad but I am sure he is on something like 30k. Gallagher is definitely another one. Id even say Treacy most definitely will not be good enough at the highest level.

The worry is, if/when we sell Warnock and Samba, we are running out of having any quality players left..........just have to hope to hell one of these foreigners (our new signings) who have never played in the PL becomes a 'star of the future'.

We sell players like Pedersen, Samba and Warnock at our peril. Especially at this stage of the new campaign.

If we can't add anyone then it may be a struggle but at least we have the nucleus of last seasons squad intact and a couple of new options up front.
