[Archived] Nikola Kalinic

Recommended Posts

I think if he was in the groove and had a few more goals already he would have been confident enough to round the keeper. It wasn't a very easy chance though. I think he is going to be decent once he gets more games and experience.

Di Santo should have got a shot off at least but I still think he is going to be a good player.

At first look, I thought why didn't Niko go round Reina but thinking about it, it would have been hard for him as all he would have seen was a big yellow blur coming straight for him. Also, there were 2 defenders closing down so even if he had gone round him there is no guarantee that it was a goal (although there would have been a much greater chance). I was more disappointed with Di Santo's chance. He had a really good opportuntity but dallied on it way too long. IMO he is showing less composure in front of goal than Niko at the moment. 4 1-on-1 in about 4 games now and not 1 goal to show for it. Benni had a pretty bad miss as well in the Liverpool game when he dragged that shot from outside the area wide. Reina had moved so he had a big gap to aim for and if on target would have been a goal so that was equally as disappointing.

I feel another few weeks and Kalinic will be snapping up chances like that and banging goals in. He looks better and better every time he plays and if he gets the chance to link up with Junior some more then that could be a useful partnership.

It is amazing how much more physically capable Kalinic looks now than when he first arrived and got the odd fifteen minutes here and there. When I watched him for the first time he was in the back pocket of the Gillingham centrebacks. On Saturday he was very competitive against two top class centre halves and looked sizeably more dangerous than Dirk Kuyt. Have to say Allardce's decision to blood him slowly is paying dividends, and it makes me interested to see what Van Heerden offers in the new year.

To be honest I see Nicola and Di Santo being the first choice partnership within the next three or four games. And you have to say it is a tantalising prospect. They have pace, ability to hold up the ball, good feet, good movement and seem well suited to each other with Di Santo a target man and Kalinic more playing on the shoulder of the defence. They do however need goals.

Last week against Liverpool, both of them and Hoilett showed just how good our attack could be. They were opening up Liverpool's defence with ease, just unfortunate they couldn't score. Emerton was relatively quiet on the attack though, but if we have him firing and Dunn fit and playing as well then we actually have some really good creativity in the side that I thought was seriously lacking at the start of the season.

Sam: Future Bright For Niko

Excellent interview with Sam.

For those old enough to rem Liverpool under Shanks signed top players and then played them in the reserves until the start of the next season. Rush, Keegan whoever all came in big money moves but were taught to play the 'Liverpool' way first. The first to break the mould was Kenny Dalglish.

It's more difficult to do now as the term 'team' decilnes in importance and is submerged in a sea of ego's, self interest and foreign temperaments, but it really is the best way overall for some players with potential.

One that conveniently misses the fact that Sam threw him on for 75 mins at Sunderland 2nd game of the season, he missed a load of sitters, got mauled on MOTD and his confidence no doubt plummeted. Or was that part of the plan?

Excellent point EiT. If Nikola had put one or two of those away chances are he would have featured far more than he has.

Wasnt we short of fit strikers at that point?!

McCarthy in a bath chair would have put half those chances away.

The point is Sam is claiming he is bringing NK on slowly whereas he didn't - he threw him in the deep end and the lad sunk. No excuses.

Maybe Sam was seeing if he could put Kalinic in straight away. Away at Sunderland is a lot less pressure than at home or against a 'top' side. He did the same with Nzonzi and that has worked wonderfully. One match showed Sam enough... Just an idea...

He has no choice - infact I think he said prior to the game he didnt plan on using him yet...and I think he mentioned it again after the game.

Face it you just dont like to praise Sam on anything.....

The fact is Sam did put him in when he shouldn't have, the statements he makes in that interview are ludicrous and the exact opposite of what he did.

He may now be breaking him in slowly but the damage he speaks of could have already been done by then.

Bringing him on at sunderland could totally have ruined his confidence, Sam ballsed up on this one and seems to be in denial over it.

Or perhaps 20 mins against sunderland away is a better test of how the lad would fair (straight in or gradual intro) than a home game, or a top team? As someone else mentioned above. And in the end, it didn't ruin his confidence and he has come on in leaps and bounds. Simples.
