I'll reserve judgement (which will probably take a long time) until the boy (and Di Snato, for that matter), have an effective winger on either side who has the abilility to whip a cross into the box.

I am yet to be convinced that our 4-5-1 will ever work, nevermind without one decent winger.

Are you the kit man per chance? ;)

Can;t blame Kalinic for being low on confidence when he cannot get a run of even 2 games starting. If he was up front with a partner (Di Santo?) maybe we'd see more from him. There aren't many strikers right now who'd look good playing in the lone man role, especially with the creative-void we call a midfield supporting them.

This is the part I just can't get my head round.

The lone striker role must be one of the hardest possible and yet we are expecting inexperienced developing kids to do the role. It beggars belief that we persist in doing it. Its David verses Golaith in reality every game, we must start playing two up front not someone in the hole but two strikers. We just don't have a complete forward but in combination we have some good partnerships. We also struggle to score goals and always will because we just can't get up to support the front man in time since we're one of the slowest teams in the league. At least with two they'd have some support and its not exactly hard to close down one player on his own with the ball as well, but two.

If the kids are to develop they need success on the pitch after 6 months of trying one up top not one of our strikers has done anything of note, they've had no successes. I really fear that Kalinic will not develop as he could have, in, out shake him all about seems to be the policy with the young lad. Strikers thrive on confidence he can't have much left, he needs a run of consecutive matches 6-7 to see if he's up to the job. But he must have support so he gets a better chance of success and progresses, on his own he's screwed as are any of our strikers.

I'm praying we play two up top tonight because if we don't I just don't see how much will change, we desperatly need more options in the final third and a second striker gives us that instantly. We might also actually keep the ball after its been launched.

Spot on, is this.

Either of these two could've scored Santa's last three goals given a similar delivery.

He lost his feet three or four times, he failed to control on a couple of others. Hoilett was up front also and gathered the ball well, and moved it well, and took on the defenders, despite having equally poor service.

Hoilett also lost the ball almost as soon as he had gathered it too, aimless running he only managed one decent move all game.

Nicko must start with Di Santo, two up top!!!!!

I'll eat Sam's undies if he doesn't. Injury aside, I just can't fathom how he can't start this evening.

He has only started him around 5-6(?) times this season in all competitions so it wouldn't suprise me if he isn't in from the off as much as I want him to be.

Those must be quite big undies that Big Sam sports BTW LeChuck.

I can: It's Allardyce.

Good job Roberts is injured! You've got to remember, Sam like tall target men that he can hoof it to. He also prefers Strikers that can't score, that's why he wants rid of Benni. If Kalanic comes on as a sub tonight and scores, he'll still be dropped on Sunday :-(

Very hard working performance by this man tonight.........he just isnt gettin the luck to go with it. 3 very good attempts, 2 hitting the post - 1 very good 1-2 with Dunn.

This boy is improving with each game, his hold up play his superb, his awareness of others is also very good and hopefully he will now get a run of games

League - 1 (11) 0

FA CUP - 1 (0) 1

League Cup - 4 (0) 2

6 starts - 3 goals (all in games started)

In the league - Minutes Played : 364

Good performance tonight, he hit the post twice tonight and we all know that's really hard to do, so really they're worth three apiece and he's on about 21 by now.

:P

Seriously though I really like the look of this lad, what he desperately needs now is an unbroken run of starts and to be playing alongside one of the other strikers not generally chasing his tail off on his own.

I'd say he's now ready to make the step up.Loved the way he soared for that header and the shot that sadly hit the post required excellent technique. But up on his own is no good. I'd love to see him alongside Di Santo on Sunday. Lets give the other side problems at the back for a change.

All Kalinic needs now is the rub of the green.

Niko Kalinic, my view (for what its worth)

When he gets the ball, I automatically shift to the edge of my seat and/or stand up. Technically, he seems very well placed in the Premier League, his vision for a pass is great, one sweeping ball for left to right tonight was sublime. I think his physical stature, especially for his age, allows him to operate well enough, but he will get better as he gets older & stronger. He has decent enough pace, is willing to put a shift in & I like his attitude on the pitch, as he is always trying to be positive with the ball & his movement off the ball. Niko Kalinic is the only player we have at the moment that is exciting to watch.

£6m was a lot of money I think, but it will be a decent enough investment in the long run, next year or the year after will be when we start seeing a good return from him I reckon.

One more thing though, I will join in with everyone else in the world to say that he is not a lone striker, in 5-7 years time maybe, but not yet. The lad needs a partner, and if he doesn't get one from the off on Sunday against Fulham, then I'm going to run uo to Allardyce during the game and slap him round the head with a wet trout.

When he plays he always seems capable of making something happen either by doing it himself or getting on the end or something, perhaps the final product hasn't quite been there at times and he's missed a few chances but the encouraging thing is that at least when he's on the pitch he's getting chances, sooner or later a couple will go in and then he could be a real threat.

People have pointed out above that he's made one league start this year, I know we were made aware that he would take 6 games or so to get match fit and all that when he signed but how did we reach the middle of January and our 6m summer signing has made only one league start? It's not till I've seen the number in front of me that it seems so shocking.

We were linked with and looked at countless strikers over the summer, Sam chose him and spent a lot of money on him, considering our recent spending, yet he chooses not to play him and instead talks about not being able to afford Darren Bent.

Okay so we don't know if he's going to be the answer but at least give him a go from the start for a few games with a striker partner, it's not like anyone else is banging them in left right and center, or at all to be honest.
