AJW Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 On the ellington transfer ; correct me if i'm wrong but doesnt di santo return to chelsea in january , is that to cover drogba , while he is a way at the ANC? , and if gallacher isnt fancied by big sam and is attracting interest from championship clubs , we could ourselves be short on strikers .........and what if mccarthy is challenged by th SA coach to prove his commitment to the national side ahead of the world cup , by playing in that ANC? .... WE COULD BE FOOKED

John Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Sam said if he signed Salgado that would be it for the season. Presumably, we would have nothing to spend in January, so he may look at back-up option (as Di Santo obviously could return to Chelsea).

WE COULD BE FOOKED Also our leader Sam has proven to pull off some great moves and re-ignite players careers on a low budget. Let's trust him in the transfer market, I'd prefer him and his signings to the likes of Bruce, Megson & Brown.
TimmyJimmy Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Simple to see what's going to happen. Peds comes in from the wing permanently and one of the new boys plays winger, Emo plays inside mid but on the right, Diouf stays as is. Depending on the oppos Emo sits on the bench and a defensive mid comes in (pick one). Back four always has Nelson in it but I guess he's out for a while and will have recurrent ligament problems all season. Givet therefore next to Samba at CM but if Nelson plays Givet has to start at left back. Give the right back to the best RB specialist. Drooling with excitement (not old age) - with Salgado we've now got real ability all over the pitch and top quality cover all over the bench. Strikers a-plenty for 2 positions. Keep giving trials to anyone who can add a bit of spice to that mix, strange or otherwise. I think Sam likes Peds and on what I saw of his inside work on Saturday I can see why. Like it, like it. The future's bright the future's Sam in Blue and White.
Hughesy Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Could this effect how the Medy Elito trial/deal proceeds. Who?!
Balwer Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Who?! Keep up Hughesy, can't have been more than a page or two ago, update by Nicko. Young lad on a trial.
waggy Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Because Salgado is probably a better full back = improvement waggy as short term as it maybe. Theres plenty of other players Big Sam can offload he just needs the offers to come in. probably ain't good enough he has to be the bees knee's,we've had offers for andrews and gally and there still here
Lathund Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I do wish people could spell Salgado. Not a difficult name to spell. It's been five years since we signed Nelson, yet some still haven't learned. Then there's Friedal, Ollson and Pederson. I expect Kalinic to cause some trouble as well.

Manc Rover Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Salgaaaaaado, ohhhhhhhhh Salgaaaaaado, ohhhhhhhhh We got him on a free! He hates the Burn-a-ley! Salgaaaaaado, ohhhhhhhhh Salgaaaaaado, ohhhhhhhhh no doubt it will be "michel salgado boom boom boom boom boom" like franco di santo boom bomm bomm boom boom and god knows how many others!
thenodrog Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I think Jacobsen played a very good match on Saturday and would continue with him even if Salgado is available. Jacobson played a good game whilst Robinho was wandering rather unenthusiastically around but he got a chasing for the last 20mins once Bellamy got on his case. I agree with you Fife, problem is Sam has got himself in a bit of a selection trouble by buying Givet. Nelsen is the club captain, a great leader and has looked solid under Sam. Samba has huge potential all the qualities to become a top CB. Givet has been really good since he joined us and looks a very decent player. All three can't play CB, who do you drop? Can't see Givet, Samba or Nelsen being happy on the bench. Nelsen is surely a starter as well as he is the captain. I guess the solution is to play Givet at left back, but that means we lose a bit offensively as he isn't going to make many forward runs. But where does that leave Warnock? You are dangerously assuming no injuries will befall any of them. My guess is Sam is accutely aware of the lack of £££ and so is willing to look at any bargain he can find who gives the club a chance to improve in any position. That said, we have a report of Elrio being in a cast on his leg at the Citeh game so we might actually be short of cover. I do find the idea of Ellington (Duke?) odd but I guess these stories are coming from Watford rather than Ewood. Those stories might even be for the benefit of Plymouth.

WE COULD BE FOOKED South Africa failed to qualify for the African Nations cup. So Benni will still play for Rovers in January
thenodrog Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 after jacobsens fine display on saturday why do we need to waste 50k on a 33 yr old, surely the money is better spent in midfield For about 60 minutes.
waggy Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 For about 60 minutes. and who gave the 1st goal away
dulwich Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 after jacobsens fine display on saturday why do we need to waste 50k on a 33 yr old, surely the money is better spent in midfield And who signed him?
unluckymorton Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Who?! He's a 19yr old Congolese lad at Colchester who has played for England u17's. I wouldn't get too excited, I wouldn't have thought he'd be a signing to figure this season, one for the future.
Iceman Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 FAO Miker, Iceman, tchocky and many others: SALGADO IS NOT BEING BROUGHT IN TO PLAY CENTRE-MIDFIELD. Listen to the words coming out of Allardyce's mouth in this interview from after the Man City game: "Short of defenders"? Clearly our priority position... Sam did mention that Salgado could perform a Hierro type role. Now did Hierro not play as a defensive midfielder? Catch a wake up Spencey
G Somerset Rover Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Sam did mention that Salgado could perform a Hierro type role. Now did Hierro not play as a defensive midfielder? Catch a wake up Spencey I know that Sam did mention it, but Hierro was a completely different player to Selgado. He was a quality ball playing centre-half, so the transition to deep lying midfielder wouldn't have been too difficult. Transforming a right back who'se never played in central midfield before is a different matter completely. I'm not saying he won't do a job there (see Emerton/Warnock etc) - because Selgado has far too much quality not to be able to. I just think that he will play full back.

Salgado started his career as a midfielder. Anyway, as a defensive midfielder he is there to break up play. If Dunn sorts himself out, then him, Diouf and Pedersen should do all the attacking. However with Dunn hardly available, i just cannot understand why no creative midfielder has been brought in. I was hoping that Sams big signing would have been Riquelme, much like the Okotcha signing. Oh well, Salgado is fine by me.
G Somerset Rover Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I guess we'll all have to agree to disagree in which position he will actually play for us. He hasn't even signed yet
tcj_jones Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Personally, I have to disagree with those saying that Salgado will be on closer to £20k than £50k. I know it's all subjective guess work, but I really do see him being one of our top earners. I hope he is as good as Sam is making out, because it's a big slice of our wage bill on a right back when we already have two players who are more than competent in that position. Unless Sam is planning on him playing in CM, then this would also suggest that he envisages Emerton very much as a midfielder as opposed to a defender.
Fife Rover Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 If Graham Alexander can do it at 37 I would have thought Salgado has a decent chance at 33. Why are we having this fruitless debate about whether or not Salgado is capable of playing a midfield role. Sam has already assesed that aspect and in his opinion Salgado can perform a certain role that he wants him to fulfill in the midfield area. We don't know just what that role is yet, but Sam obviously does, so why not just trust in Sam's judgement and wait and see? Edit: Sorry Owenrilla...I was not meaning to answer or have a go at your post in any way at all.I actually intended my post to be a general reply to all the people that are debating the Salgado signing in general.
Veevs Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 Salgado has played right mid, def mid and right back.. but most of his career has been right back, so I doubt he will be overly confident anywhere else, however Sam does have a thing for moving players to positions they are not renown for and making a success of it.
