[Archived] Transfer Topic The Final Day

Recommended Posts

In football, sometimes, you get an opportunity to sign not only quality, but a presence around the place, there are not many around, particularly on free transfers.

Here we have one of the top proffessionals in the world who will help the younger lads along and provide a presence on the park which we havent got at the moment, he will lift the dressing room and be a real leader!!

He is still fit, his legs havent gone and his technique is excellent!!

More than a touch of conjecture in that post I'd suggest kelbo.

Unfortunately for you, he is reiterating Sam's justifcation for signing him and the tributes paid to Salgado by his colleagues at Real Madrid.

Hughesy will be able to comment having bumped into him at the Northcote.

Zurab must be kept as we dont have enough center backs.

Not sure thats true as Givet and Jackobsen can both play at full back plus we have Gunning. [/size] I would consider it if anyone offered decent money for him. Unfortunately that is unlikely at this late stage.

Jacobsen isnt a center back.

Givet is, and along with Samba and Nelsen, they are our only established center backs. I would be against selling Zurab right now unless we would get 2 million pounds for him, and even then its not like a replacement will be signed, so why weaken our squad. If we are looking to offload, we should be looking at our midfielders.

If the board don't give into this then I dread to think of the consequences.

No doubt similar posts will be appearing on club mboards all over the country.

BUT The financial winds of change are blowing hard all over the country as the effects of the recession are being estimated. Less jobs less paying supporters and more importantly fewer sky sports packages with less revenue feeding down from advertising etc. If they have not the wit to do it themselves football clubs all over europe will currently be being reigned in by the banks. Toxic debt and all that jazz. Tell me do Somerset do you think the next sky package will be like the last one and virtually double clubs income from media sources or do you think reallity will kick in?

We are now seeing clubs coming up to the Prem like Burnley with the sole intention of their directors and shareholders of keeping wages and associated costs to a minimum and taking as much money as possible back down to the Coca Cola championship to guarantee future solvency. The Prem is not sustainable for them but it's akin to filling up their lungs with air as the water rises over their heads again.

conjecture verb

to guess, based on the appearance of a situation and not on proof:

Nothing wrong with what I said so why do you say 'unfortunately' for me Gunner?

This is my interpretation!!

A conjecture is a proposition which is presumed to be real, true, or genuine, mostly based on inconclusive grounds. Karl Popper pioneered the use of the term "conjecture" in scientific philosophy

Absolutely bizarre one...I hear Rovers are bringing in ANOTHER centre half on trial...no idea what this means.

And, by the way, after watching top-flight football for 29 years I'll say it again...the Premier League this season is going to have more ordinary teams in it than at any other time.

Isn't Gunning out on loan??? He'd be better off playing the season or half at Tranmere.

I would hang on to Zurab unless we get say 3-4 million for him. He's played a variety of roles in the past, ableit he's better in the center but he can play this level. We've already lost Nelsen so I'd be happy to stick with what we have unless we can shift Gally and say one of Andrews, Grella, Reid or Dunn then perhaps we might yet be able to bring in a midfielder. But I can't see anyone bidding on our midfielders this window with there injury records.

Our midfields weaker than last year and it was weak then, I'm hoping Sam can weave his magic wand yet again (he has got 12 days). You never know??

Thenodrog - I thought I'd read Sky subscritions where up as people took them out instead of going out to save money?

There is little doubt that at some stage reality will kick in. You would certainly hope it to.

My point however is that Big Sam has hardly pushed the boat out this summer after making significant sales and probably feels that he is 'owed one' if you like, by the board. This 'one' would appear to be Selgado. I appreciate that many Premiership manager feel the same right now but only a few - if any, have to work with a similar sized budget to Sam's.

I just get the feeling that if the board do say "sorry Sam, it's a no go" then there may be consequences in the long run.

Quite a number have to work with less this year!! its not like it was, even United havent been able to use all the Ronaldo cash!!

Brother in law has a ST at Turd Moor, should be free, he paid £1,000 for a family ticket and cant get his money back until the first sky payment kicks in!! Thats how football is at the moment, something will have to give soon with many clubs going to the wall!

Surely if we were going to sell Samba or Warnock and bring in another Centre Half they wouldnt be a trialist and they would be snapped up with the money made from the sale?

Sounds like cover to me. Wonder if Sam is worried about some injury prone players at the back.

That's because a small number of teams have the funds to acquire all the talent and push on for honours, whilst the rest are just happy to make up the numbers. Blame the foreign investments and the Champions League for the way the Premier League is these days.

Even the 'big four' are weaker this time round...only Man City and Sunderland have genuinely improved by spending.

Think we are heading for a reality check all round soon.

The age of the trialist would be interesting, if he is young then he could be one for the future and tie in with Sam's recent comments about investing in youth. If the trialist is far from young and on the older side then its either as cover or someone is leaving.

Sam has come out with some really odd comments recently especially the one about bringing in Salgado 'because we are short of defenders' and we have had a few defensive trialists on board (the brazilian and now this new trialist?). If you ask any Rovers fan i think pretty much everyone would agree that our backline is fine and doesn't need strengthening.

I wouldn't be opposed in principle to selling Zurab and bringing in a cheaper replacement therefore allowing us to bring in a midfielder, but like i've said on numerous occasions I can't see us bringing in any midfielders unless we sell one of our existing ones. We lost the opportunity to do just that when Andrews was the target of Fulham.

I think your right Nicko, especially after last season. A couple of wins against teams around us, games that we should have won anyway, would have seen us in Europe. A couple of wins less would have seen us relegated.

I think the middle pack (the middle pack now being everyone other than Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool) is merging with the bottom 3 and anything can happen.

Any idea who the 'other' centre half is? Possibly a kid like the Colchester winger we seem to be looking at? I see it strange that we would be looking at centre halves when we even have decent ones for back up.

Maybe somebody is unsettled and Sam's preparing for the worse....

Seconded Exiled Rover. The days that Le Tissier would stay at somewhere like Southampton all their career are over, as all the money is elsewhere.

Ah, but I believe Derbs would have done the same if he had been prepared for ONE more year on our bench. If he'd done that, he'd be vying for a 1st team place NEXT season imo.

I have the name and will let it out later [after the games tonight]...but the reason why is still a puzzle.
